Teacher Appreciation Week and a Few Reminders

Hello Creeker Families!
I’ve got one big new thing to share this week and a few important reminders. But first, I got the picture below from a Kinder student this morning–I think it says it all!

1) Next week is Teacher Appreciation Week! I think more than ever this is an important occasion to celebrate–teachers around the world have endured incredible challenges and obstacles over the last year in supporting students, and I think they need to know just how much we appreciate them. You’ll have your chance next week to show your appreciation–be on the look out for an email from your class representative.

2) Reminder: Walk and Bike to School, May 5
Here’s the plan.  We’ll have 2 simultaneous options available:
*Bikers will meet at Pastini’s in the Old Mill at 7:30am and be guided to school by Matt.  This is mainly for Olders (Grades 3-5) but is open to Youngers if they have a parent with them.  They will follow the paved trail from the Old Mill to Miller’s Landing Park, continue on Riverside Drive, take a right on Congress St and continue on to St Helens which will take them to Amity Creek.  Bikes will then be parked on the playground and can be picked up at the end of the day.  We are in need of a few parent volunteers to help—please email me if you can help[email protected]

*Walkers will meet at the top of the hill in Drake Park (alongside the parking lot) at 7:45am and walk along Broadway to school.  We’d love for lots of parent to join the walk if you have time! Please let me know if you plan to join: [email protected]

3) Reminder: Variety Show–videos due May 7 (next week!)
First, I need to clear something up—I stated in my earlier post that we missed the Variety Show last year, and this is completely wrong!  We did have our annual Variety Show last year the week before everything unraveled!  So, I stand corrected.  New statement: Nothing will stop us from having our annual Variety Show!  This year we will do it using pre-recorded videos. See below for details:
*Students may share one video to be included in the Variety Show iMovie.  The video cannot be more than one minute and 30 seconds.
*All videos must be received by Friday, May 7
*Before uploading, please be sure to name the file with your child’s first name and last initial
*Videos can be submitted here in this Google Form: Variety Show Video Upload.   If you are not able to download the video on the form you can email it to me: [email protected], but please try your best to get it into the form! I’m so excited to see what your kiddos want to share with the community!

Spring has Sprung!

Hello Creeker Families,
I hope the longer, warmer days are treating you well and that you are settling deep into Spring! Here at school it’s hard to tell if it’s the arrival of Spring, or the fact that we’re all back home together now, but the energy is high and joyful!

Spring is always a super busy time at school, and this year is no different. I have lots to share with you! In this note:
*Drop-off and Pick-up notes
*Arriving Late, Leaving Early
*New Camp Fire Session
*School Pictures
*The Flower Power fundraiser
*Reviving the Variety Show
*When A Child’s Emotions Spike–article to share

Schedule Reminder for this week
Just a reminder that there is school on Wednesday and Thursday this week, and no school Friday.

Drop-off and Pick-up
Drop-off and Pick-up are going super well, so a huge thank you! A few reminders to refresh our procedures and safety:
*Please pull as far forward as you can when dropping off–we have the whole block! Please try to avoid dropping your child off in the first 100 feet from Georgia St if you can–please wait a moment for cars to pull away and pull forward.
*Please have your child unload on the curb side ONLY. You are putting your child at risk by allowing them to unload on the street side. I’ve witnessed a few close calls in the last two weeks.
*After dropping your child off please be sure to check for cars before pulling out–I helplessly watched a very near miss last week.

Arriving Late, Leaving Early
If you arrive after 8:05am the gate on Broadway will be locked, so you will need bring your child around to the front door of school. If you need to pick up your child early please notify Patti at least 15 minutes prior to the time you will be picking up. If you are picking up early please come to the front door.

New Camp Fire Session starting May 3–register now
Camp Fire is offering some great after school programming at Amity Creek 5 days a week. The new session starts May 3. Click here to register.

School Pictures are April 26

Bike/Walk to School Day is May 5
For those who don’t live in the neighborhood we are in the process of planning a meet up spot where students and families can walk or bike to school. It would be great to get a BIG group of folks to meet up and make the trek together! We’ll share the meet up spot and start time soon!

The Flower Power fundraiser is still on!
Here’s the original note we shared from Friends of Amity: Hello Creekers! All of us on the Friends of Amity board want to invite you to participate in a new fundraising opportunity for the school. This year, to welcome Spring, we have partnered with Flower Power Fundraising, an online flower shop that offers high quality Spring planting bulbs, seeds and berries for your garden. When you make a purchase, 50% of the sale will directly benefit the school through FOA. There are two ways to order, you can shop online via this link http://AmityCreek.fpfundraising.com and they’ll ship directly to your home with a $6 shipping fee. You’re welcome to share this link with friends and family across the country!  Or, you can grab a paper order form and we’ll place a bulk order that can be picked up when ready. Please reach out to Magadalyn [email protected] to arrange a paper order form. We encourage you to take advantage of the online opportunity due to COVID challenges. All orders much be placed by May 1st.

Did Someone Say Variety Show?
I think I heard someone say it! Unfortunately, for the second year running, we cannot gather to honor and appreciate the talents and skills of this amazing group of children. However, it doesn’t mean we can’t have a show! I am committed to gathering videos filmed at home and creating a movie to share with the entire community. I’ll send details in the next two weeks, but in the meantime get the creative juices flowing with your child! One thing I can tell you now is that videos will be limited to one minute and 30 seconds in order to allow as many kiddos to participate as possible. Stay tuned!

When A Child’s Emotions Spike
It’s been a while since I shared an article and I’d like to bring back the practice. Here’s one about helping to strengthen your child’s emotional competence. I hope it is useful! Article

3) We will now have school on April 14th and 15th. Originally these days were set aside for Conversations (conferences); however, since we will not be in school on April 1 and 2 these are now in person school days. Friday, April 16 is still a no school day.
4) Since we’ll be in school on April 14 and 15, Conversations will take place between now and April 16. Teachers will be reaching out with available times very soon.
