{"id":729,"date":"2023-04-07T15:11:14","date_gmt":"2023-04-07T15:11:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.bend.k12.or.us\/blscounselors\/?p=729"},"modified":"2023-04-07T15:11:15","modified_gmt":"2023-04-07T15:11:15","slug":"4-7-23","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bend.k12.or.us\/blscounselors\/2023\/04\/07\/4-7-23\/","title":{"rendered":"4.7.23"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Bend-LaPine Schools Crisis Response and Support Team<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Crisis Response and Support Team (CRST) is designed to support schools through a crisis, such as a sudden death or an accident.&nbsp; This team aids in restoring stability in the wake of a crisis by supporting students and staff members experiencing loss, grief or trauma. Trained staff members provide mental health triage, manage staff and student support rooms, and provide respite support to school staff to allow for self-care breaks during a crisis event response.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The CRST provides assistance after the death or serious injury of a student\/s or staff member and\/or a traumatic event or any event which polarizes, isolates, or shocks people, such as a natural disaster.&nbsp; Each response is specific and designed based on the needs of the school.&nbsp; Typical support can look like:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Support Rooms for students and\/or staff in crisis<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Teacher Respite (cover classrooms when a break is needed)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Coping strategy information for building staff<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Answering phones for Front Office Staff<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Assisting staff in delivering (district provided) messages to students<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Monitor Hallways and school grounds<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Follow deceased student\u2019s class schedule and deliver (district provided) messages to students<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Assist in Staff debriefing at end of day<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>(The CRST will take the place of the Tri-County response team effective Fall 2023.&nbsp; Tri-County response team will no longer be a service utilized in Bend-La Pine Schools.)<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Are you interested in volunteering to serve on the CRST?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Student Services Department and Deschutes County will assemble and train Bend-La Pine staff (school counselors, school psychologists) to serve on the CRST.&nbsp; By volunteering to be part of the CRST, you are willing to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Participate in a one day training on June 21, 2023.&nbsp; This is after your contract ends and you will be able to timesheet those hours.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Download a (TBD) messaging app so you can be contacted when the crisis team is activated.&nbsp; More specific information about this will be provided at the training.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Be ASIST trained prior to the June 21, 2023 CRST training (if not already trained in ASIST).<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Each member of the CRST will be allowed to timesheet up to 20 hours per year at their regular rate of pay for work done outside of their regular work day when assisting in a postvention response or crisis response.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For this initial launch, we have space for 30 volunteers.&nbsp; If you are interested in volunteering and meet the criteria above, <strong>please sign-up<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/forms\/d\/e\/1FAIpQLSe1GdgA1luJSy4qqyUZESVUlP5mSKtssFy9gKp4K1s5zAxokw\/viewform\">HERE<\/a> and standby for more information about the June 21, 2023 training.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Update from ODE re: School Districts Acceptance of Credits from Educational Programs<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In Oregon, students who complete credits and coursework while enrolled in Youth Corrections Education Programs (YCEP), Juvenile Detention Education Programs (JCEP), Hospital education programs, as well as Long Term Care and Treatment Facilities (LTCT) must be acknowledged and accepted by Oregon school districts. Enacted through&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/lnks.gd\/l\/eyJhbGciOiJIUzI1NiJ9.eyJidWxsZXRpbl9saW5rX2lkIjoxMDIsInVyaSI6ImJwMjpjbGljayIsInVybCI6Imh0dHBzOi8vb2xpcy5vcmVnb25sZWdpc2xhdHVyZS5nb3YvbGl6LzIwMjJSMS9Eb3dubG9hZHMvTWVhc3VyZURvY3VtZW50L1NCMTUyMi9FbnJvbGxlZD91dG1fbWVkaXVtPWVtYWlsJnV0bV9zb3VyY2U9Z292ZGVsaXZlcnkiLCJidWxsZXRpbl9pZCI6IjIwMjMwNDA1Ljc0NjY3MzUxIn0.IP8HzQbh1Ta7JAbCiiYDS-_KIiv2LE8zuZ3ti6L67uE\/s\/986629506\/br\/157435135409-l\">Senate Bill 1522<\/a>&nbsp;(2022), this requirement creates greater access for students to continue coursework while enrolled in one of these programs, ensuring they continue to make progress toward graduation requirements.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition to the acceptance of credits through the education programs named above,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/lnks.gd\/l\/eyJhbGciOiJIUzI1NiJ9.eyJidWxsZXRpbl9saW5rX2lkIjoxMDMsInVyaSI6ImJwMjpjbGljayIsInVybCI6Imh0dHBzOi8vc2VjdXJlLnNvcy5zdGF0ZS5vci51cy9vYXJkL3ZpZXdTaW5nbGVSdWxlLmFjdGlvbj9ydWxlVnJzblJzbj0zMDAxMTcmdXRtX21lZGl1bT1lbWFpbCZ1dG1fc291cmNlPWdvdmRlbGl2ZXJ5IiwiYnVsbGV0aW5faWQiOiIyMDIzMDQwNS43NDY2NzM1MSJ9._YEQmlAtIpSvFT5R3N7QhO_KE9hm4bw6WBuEYmQ5zCs\/s\/986629506\/br\/157435135409-l\">OAR 581-021-0210<\/a>: Evaluating Student Transcripts, has been updated to align with the new law. As such, Oregon school districts are strongly encouraged to review student transcripts and award credit to students who participated in programs prior to the passing of this law.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By recognizing the value of education programs in these facilities, Oregon is creating more opportunities for students to succeed and reach their full potential. This is in &#8220;Ways and Means&#8221; (closer to passing, but looking at cost).  They are looking at .5 credit for higher ed and career path planning and .5  personal finance.  <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>HB 3094 &#8211; adds 0.5 <strong>financial literacy credit<\/strong> requirement to high school graduation. (Could be merged with the above SB 3).  <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>HB 2281 &#8211; requires school districts and public charter schools to designate <strong>civil rights coordinator <\/strong>(Passed)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>HB 3030 &#8211; assists schools in offering reimbursable <strong>breakfast and lunch free of charge<\/strong>, if those costs are not otherwise reimbursed<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>HB 2643 &#8211; districts to develop, review and revise <strong>suicide prevention plan<\/strong> for each youth demonstrating suicidal behavior. Requires ODE\/OHA to maintain record of all individualized suicide plans.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>HB 2646 &#8211; district to train school employees on <strong>mental illness and substance use disorder<\/strong>, and designate <strong>mental health point of contact<\/strong> to coordinate and facilitate access to services and resources<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>HB 2636 &#8211; requires district to ensure that school-based mental health professional and school-based nurse is located at every school ((closer to passing, but looking at fiscal impact)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>HB 3068 &#8211; creates a <strong>high school equivalency diploma<\/strong> for students who pass the GED<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>SB 992 &#8211; sets requirements for information recorded on <strong>student transcripts<\/strong>, including types of credits earned by student<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>SB 575, SB 756, SB 758, SB 992 &#8211; A series of bills related to <strong>special education<\/strong>, including assignment to modified courses and transcription of modified courses<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>SB 595, SB 596, SB 736 &#8211; a series of bills relating to<strong> TAG education<\/strong>, including increasing funding, reporting to ODE, and access to advanced instruction<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>SB 1045 &#8211;&nbsp; increases <strong>monitoring and support<\/strong> of districts by ODE<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>HB 2961 &#8211; $5mil to HECC to <strong>expand college access and success programs<\/strong> at colleges and universities<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Free Webinar!  <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Hatching Hour: Flashlight Presentations in Practice: Highlighting School Counseling Program\u00a0Data<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Data is the core of comprehensive school counseling programs in pursuit of systemic change.
