SELCO’s SPARK! Creative Learning Grants

As a credit union founded by teachers, SELCO is excited about projects that inspire curiosity, bring students together, and spark something new. That’s why SELCO offers educator grants of up to $1,000 to help bring creative classroom ideas to life. Applications are open August 15–September 30. Visit selco.org/SPARK for details and to apply.

Class Lists

Our current plan is to complete the Synergy upload on Wednesday, August 21st. Once we input into Synergy you can access your class list in Synergy. I want to avoid printing any lists from our google doc and rely on the synergy lists to reduce chances of errors.

Classroom Set-Up

Please see the following info sheet for some tips on keeping yourself safe when setting up your classrooms.

Safe Hallways

Sorry to remind you of this, but the top of the lockers are not intended for storage – please move materials into cabinets or other storage options and keep these spaces clear.  We have a lot of materials that could easily fall on kids and I have not done a good job of reminding you to store items elsewhere. Also, workspaces (furniture) in the halls need to be temporary.  The halls became dangerously congested last year with the furniture – please do not wait for an accident to happen before you do something about these issues. Every piece of furniture in the hall and every item on top of the lockers adds unnecessary risk to our students.  I apologize for letting this slide over the past year, but in the interest of keeping our hallways safe, we need to reign this back in. Thanks for your understanding.

Suicide Prevention

New Staff:

Please join me in welcoming Alice Sandusky as our new nurse.  I know we will all miss Angelina and it is hard to see her go, but let’s join together and give Alice a warm Highland welcome.  Angelina’s was reassigned to REALM and North Star. As a new school, North Star will be very fortunate to have her.

Highland PTO:

You can help Highland PTO by providing these links to parents in your classroom communications:

INFO FOR TEACHERS TO PASS ALONG TO PARENTS:

 -Confidential Scholarship Fund Application: https://www.highlandpto.org/pto-scholarship-form

As a reminder, the scholarship funds can be used for anything Highland related (yearbooks, Highland apparel, boot camp, etc) and will be kept confidential.

-Giving Campaign Donation for school supply and boot camp donations; https:/www.highlandpto.org/giving-campaign

-Volunteer Sign-Ups: https://www.highlandpto.org/volunteer-now

-Sign-up for PTO emails: https://www.highlandpto.org/sign-up-for-pto-emails

To make things easier you now have the following links available on the Highland PTO Website.  These are not necessary for your classroom/storyline fund purchases; those purchases are made by filling out a supply order form, requesting a credit card or submitting reimbursement receipts to Shawna.  Also, we’ll provide more info and guidance on the Grant Fund Request later as this is still a relatively new concept.

From Lora Nordquist:

Team:

While the Bend-area Jewish community is not large, we have a significant number of Jewish families in our school district. We were contacted last year by a local rabbi, asking us to avoid scheduling family events on their holiest of holidays. These are Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. For 2019, these are the dates these holidays fall:

  • Rosh Hashanah-sunset Sunday, 9/29-sundown Tuesday, 10/1
  • Yom Kippur-sunset Tuesday, 10/8-sundown Wednesday, 10/9

Please note that these dates do not mean school activities need to come to a standstill, but please avoid scheduling events such as open houses, curriculum nights, etc.

 Thanks!

Message from Shawna & Elizabeth:

  • SUB COVERAGE: Full day certified subs will work 7:15 – 3:15.  Half day certified subs will work 7:30 – 11:30 and 11:30 – 3:30.
  • AFTER SCHOOL BUS: Bus will leave at 2:38 sharp.  Buses cannot return to pick up missed students, due to the domino effect it will have on the middle school/high school routes.
  • FIELD TRIP BUS:  Field trip pick up/return must be between 9:00-2:00 Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday.  There will be no buses for Wednesday field trips.
  • RADIOS:  We have new radios which must be charged nightly.
  • FIELD TRIP PERMISSION SLIPS:  We are required to keep permission slips on file three years.  New Field Trip Permission Slip Form https://portal.bend.k12.or.us/system/files/update_field_trip_activity_realease_of_liability_form_new_4.2019.pdf

Message from Transportation:

Hello All Bend-La Pine Staff

Welcome back to a new school year. We at the Transportation Department want to make planning your curricular trips as easy as possible. We ask that when you plan trips keep in mind that High School “Pay to Play” have first priority and then Middle School sports. Above all else, transporting students from home to school and back home is our #1 job and is our main priority. The best times for field trips are between school hours, 9:00 am to 2:00 pm every day except Wednesdays. For large out of area trips, we have drivers available on the weekends. Trip fees are; $1.70 per mile per bus and $29.00 per hour per driver (plus Per Diems if applicable). Trips need to be entered into “School Dude” at least 14 days in advance.

School Improvement Wednesdays can get complicated with the already tight schedules so please refrain from requesting buses on those days.

In addition, we will not commit to any trips during Graduation week. (June 4 – June 6th) We do not have enough drivers or buses to accommodate additional trips during this very busy time. We will not be accepting School dude bus requests for these days.

Between sports seasons, we are more available for curricular trips. We are more than happy to work with User Groups to check availability dates.

As a reminder, all Charters must all be booked through our transportation department by entering your trip into “School Dude” and selecting charter bus as transportation type.

Please call us if you have any questions or concerns regarding the best times to arrange your bus field trips.

Have a Great School Year

Thank you,

Christina Cathcart

2019-2020 Master Schedule

Please be sure to take a good look at this schedule to understand any changes from previous years.  When reading the schedule – each cell represents a 15-minute block. For example, a cell that is aligned with the time “12:00” represents 12:00-12:15.  The cell the aligns with 12:15 represents 12:15-12:30.

A couple of new sheets were added;

  • “Specialist Schedule” – allows you to see your music, PE and M&M days.  The library times will be added later.
  • “Cafeteria Schedule” – The specific times for each group are listed in a table and if you scroll right the table seating is displayed.  Both of these are subject to change as we work through the flow during the first weeks.
  • Coming Soon!!  “Transitions” – this has a bell schedule* as well as responsibilities for the transition responsibilities.
    • *Bell schedule – This sheet notes transitions with and without bells.  I’ve done my best to minimize bells. For example, there is no bell for the start of some recesses which allows you to determine when you want to release the students to head outside from your classroom.  If this bell schedule works out there will be no need to use whistles during the lunch recesses.
    • The table to the right on this sheet outlines who is responsible for which transition.  If everyone follows the transition responsibilities then we should be able to keep a better handle on the hallway behavior throughout the day.
