3/3/23 Weekly Update

Highland Norms:  Linked here is a draft of Highland Norms.  If you have any concerns or questions regarding these norms, please make an appointment with me to share your concerns.

UKG: Use this link to access the page with videos and instructions.

23-24 Master Schedule:  Please use the following link to provide some feedback on the current schedule we can use in making the schedule for the 23-24 school year.  We have a committee meeting on Tuesday 3/14 for a half day to take the first crack at it.

First Aid/CPR Class: The district is currently offering a blended model for the First Aid/CPR class.  The class will be done online with a hands-on skills assessment to follow.  The online portion of the class should take about three (3) hours with the skills assessment to follow with a first aid/CPR trainer that will take about 15 minutes.  The online course can be done to fit your schedule.  Your First Aid/CPR card will not be issued until all portions of class are completed.

The process will be as follows:

1 . Sign up for the class in Performance Matters

2.      Michelle Spetic will send you a link from HSI/Medic to get started ([email protected]).

Please check your Junk Mail if it does not appear in your regular inbox.

3.  After each section of the online session, there will be a one or two question quiz.

4.  When scheduled, the hands-on skills assessment schedule will be emailed to you to register if you have completed the online portion.  You can only do the in-person skills assessment after you have completed the online portion of the class

5.      The in-person skills assessment will be done in 30-minute increments.

6.       First Aid cards will be sent out once both portions of the class are completed.

OSAS Testing 3rd-5th Grades:  Here is a document with all of the testing training modules for the OSAS Testing. Our testing window begins on May 15th so you have some time to complete these but please do so before we begin. Thanks, Heidi T.

From Dan Dummit – check out this document for information on common safety violations found in classrooms and what the Fire Marshal looks for during inspections.  There is a new Fire Marshall  at some of your buildings and we need to be on point with following these guidelines.

Field Trip Reminder:  Please be sure to notify our nurse, Michelle, about upcoming field trips (at least 2 weeks in advance), just to be sure we are covering our bases.

From Heidi Thomas and Highland’s Culture of Care Team: Here is the link to our 22/23 Highland Culture of Care Folder. This is where our school expectations posters and videos will live. I have also made a copy of all of the Classroom 180 SIW slide decks and added them to the file.

2/24/23 Weekly Update

Highland Norms:  Linked here is a draft of Highland Norms.  If you have any concerns or questions regarding these norms, please make an appointment with me to share your concerns.

Belonging Study Survey: A group of us (7) are participating in the book study on Belonging Through a Culture of Dignity and we would like your help with the following survey.  This book and the book study experience is really positive and inspiring, so I would highly encourage you to consider joining if they offer it again.  Please take a few minutes to complete the survey and it is extremely helpful to have full staff participation, so we thank you in advance;  Belonging Survey

Indoor Recess: I am sorry if this was not clear the first time we did this in the fall, but the morning recesses with combined grade levels are just too large to safely walk the halls, especially with the combination of small kids and big kids.  To be clear, we will not walk the halls during these morning recesses for the remainder of the year.  We can walk the halls during the two other recess times when we have grade spans only.

Foundational Skills – Small Groups: Please respond to the following survey regarding foundational skills instruction.  As a reference, this rubric is something I am reviewing periodically to see how we are progressing as a whole school with this implementation.

UKG: Use this link to access the page with videos and instructions.

From Julie Walker and Marci Adams re:  Erin’s Law- Please see the following communication and plan for teaching the required Erin’s Law Child Sexual Abuse and Prevention lessons.  If you have any questions or feedback please reach out.

From Jennifer Hauth – The state is looking for feedback on the draft SEL standards and framework. There will be three listening sessions: Zoom Link: https://www.zoomgov.com/j/16160293174

STEM Lesson Opportunity:

If you are looking for something new and different check out the link below.  HDESD has a grant that will provide a teacher to come to your room and and provide STEM lessons.  It’s the perfect way to learn how to use technology in the classroom without taking time to attend a workshop.

The lessons could be with Spheros, BeeBots, VEX robots, Makey Makeys, all kinds of cool things. Our intention is to provide these in-class visits so teachers can learn along with the students without having to attend a PD. Then hopefully in the future they would be more comfortable trying these activities on their own.  The STEM lending library is full of all these awesome items.

Teachers can sign up here:

https://forms.gle/P4DtAaG6GMmSyLKT9

Computer Science VisitsPlease indicate your interests for computer science visits. These visits can be customized to whatever works best for you. We have two model ideas: 1. In-Class Activity: Have Josi Rogers come lead a 1-1.5 hour activity with your class. Your job would be to help with classroom management and to learn alongside your class. The hope is that you may learn enough to try similar activities with your classes this year or next year. 2. PD Session: Schedule a “PD” session during a PLC time. Josi Rogers would teach the team about a specific kit/concept so you could take it back to your own classrooms.forms.gle

From Heidi Thomas and Highland’s Culture of Care Team: Here is the link to our 22/23 Highland Culture of Care Folder. This is where our school expectations posters and videos will live. I have also made a copy of all of the Classroom 180 SIW slide decks and added them to the file.

I have access to a newish SEL curriculum called Wayfinder. I am looking for a few classes that would be willing to have me come in and teach a few lessons. Ideally I could pop into a class from each grade level. Let me know if you are interested, I’m pretty excited abou it. Speaking of SEL, as a reminder you all have access to a free account with Harmony SEL. They not only have great lessons but also quick buddy up and community circle questions. Please reach out if you want help or have any questions about it.

Here is a link to an article on Why Teaching Kindess in Schools is Essential.

Here is our assembly plan and sign up. Please let me know if you are willing or interested in creating a video for our next assembly on March 3rd.

2/17/23 Weekly Update

Highland Norms:  Linked here is a draft of Highland Norms.  If you have any concerns or questions regarding these norms, please make an appointment with me to share your concerns.

2023-2024 Staffing Survey: Please use the following link to indicate your plans for next year.

Minis, SLGGs: It’s that time of year when I really need to stay on top of my minis; if you see me in your classroom please assume we need to follow up with a debrief conversation – I appreciate your help.  If you still have a formal observation needed, let’s get those on the calendar asap.  As for your SLGGs, it’s the middle of the year so it’s a good time to review your goals and check that you have strategies in place to make sure your target students are progressing as planned.

Bad News/Good News: The bad news is our maintenance team cannot reach the location of the mysterious leak underneath the front of the building – it’s blocked by concrete foundations and a ton of buried brick and debris. The last possible access was explored today and it was a very dusty dead end. The good news is they will install a separate, dedicated water heater to the sink and dishwasher in the staff room AND I’ve asked to have an inline water filter system installed to the sink which will provide filtered water to that tap. This work is expected to happen next week. A separate solution will be put in place for the 3 other bathroom sinks but these will require a little more extensive work to provide on-demand water heaters at each sink so these will happen on a date to be determined. Thank you for your patience as the maintenance crew explored the various solutions to the problem.

UKG: Use this link to access the page with videos and instructions.

Lexia Tip: Here is a quick note from our Lexia rep, Lisa Potter; Did you know that you can get an alert if a student needs a lesson or has achieved a certificate emailed directly to you? You can even change the frequency to daily, weekly or semi-monthly. Here is the Help Article to set up your notifications and save you time.

From Heidi Thomas and Highland’s Culture of Care Team: Here is the link to our 22/23 Highland Culture of Care Folder. This is where our school expectations posters and videos will live. I have also made a copy of all of the Classroom 180 SIW slide decks and added them to the file.

Kind to our Community: We’ve been noticing a lot of garbage on the playground and the field. It would be amazing to talk to classes about taking care of our community by throwing away garbage (snack wrappers). Tim and Zach have also mentioned finding a lot of chewed gum around the school. This could be another great topic to bring up with your class.

  • Here is our assembly plan and sign-up. Thanks, Sadie and class for making this month’s video!

2/10/23 Weekly Update

Highland Norms:  Linked here is a draft of Highland Norms.  If you have any concerns or questions regarding these norms, please make an appointment with me to share your concerns.

2023-2024 Staffing Survey: Please use the following link to indicate your plans for next year.

UKG Start Date is Monday 2/13/23.  Use this link to access the page with videos and instructions.

MTSS Cycle 2: Thanks for your work on the 2nd round of MTSS. I want to take a moment to re-emphasize how important it is to celebrate the growth for our school population.  Our students are responding well to the instruction and that is very evident.  Great work!

Educator Network Day (2/15) 2:00-3:15: Since some might have the need to travel for the Educator Network day, we will not have a staff meeting this coming Wednesday.

From Instructional Tech – Our instructional technology team is partnering with the Central Oregon STEM Hub to offer a Computer Science SIW on the Educator Network Day next week. This session will provide hands-on stations to learn more about the loanable equipment available, including Ozobots, Spheros, and Bee-Bots. The team would love to see as many schools represented as possible. If you know someone on your staff who would enjoy this session, please encourage them to sign-up here or in Performance Matters. Reach out to Tracy Howk or Robbie Faith with questions.

2023 KnowBe4 Security Awareness Training – Please remember to complete your security awareness training by February 28th. If you have any questions, please contact your site tech, or call the help desk at extension 1200.

From Kinsey:  Equity Topics in Health- and Wellness- Related Instruction:

Menstrual Dignity Act:  We are continuing the phased installation and implementation of hardware and products in all bathrooms, in accordance with state expectations and timelines.  More soon on next steps in that roll-out.  In the meantime, here is the updated Toolkit the state released a couple months ago.  Section IV: Education has relevant tools for K-12 classroom conversations and instruction.

You are welcome to teach lessons on the topic if you’re ready to dive in, but the only ask for the moment is that you review the toolkit and raise awareness and familiarity with the topic and resources.  Doing this now will help us feel more informed and comfortable when we take next steps with implementation over the upcoming months.  If you have questions, please reach out to Kinsey or a LEAD/Equity Coach.

Erin’s Law:  Here are the Kid’s Center slides from the workshop.  As a reminder, more information and training specifically on health curriculum/materials to support Erin’s Law (formerly we used Safe Touch) implementation will come from the elementary curriculum team.  We have a couple schools piloting a new curriculum for Erin’s Law.  The rest of the schools will use the Barbara Sinatra Children’s Center materials that we used last year.  Julie will be sending out information soon with a timeline and links for implementation.

LEAD/Equity TOSAs: Our equity coaches are available to partner on preparing family communication ahead of controversial/sensitive lessons, to co-plan or co-teach, or to help pull resources and materials for teams.  Don’t forget about the follow-up anti-bias lessons!

FREE ESOL Endorsement: Certified teachers: Interested in getting your ESOL endorsement for free?

Bend-La Pine Schools has a partnership with OSU to cover all tuition and costs associated with ESOL certification.  Our goal is to increase the number of classroom teachers who are highly-trained in supporting culturally- and linguistically diverse learners and families.  We have had several cohorts of teachers selected for this opportunity in prior years, who have earned their ESOL endorsement with no cost, moved over on the pay scale, and are better equipped to serve our students and families!

If you are interested in learning more about this opportunity, you must apply by April 3.  Additional details here.

From Heidi Thomas and Highland’s Culture of Care Team: Here is the link to our 22/23 Highland Culture of Care Folder. This is where our school expectations posters and videos will live. I have also made a copy of all of the Classroom 180 SIW slide decks and added them to the file.

2/3/23 Weekly Update

Highland Norms:  Linked here is a draft of Highland Norms.  If you have any concerns or questions regarding these norms, please make an appointment with me to share your concerns.

School Dismissal:  Just a friendly reminder that school is dismissed at 2:15pm (12:45 on Wednesdays).  We currently have students being released 5 to 10 minutes early which is encouraging them disrupt younger siblings’ classrooms prior to dismissal and/or climbing the fence because we are not out there to unlock gates that early.

Practicum Students: If you are interested in hosting a practicum student from OSU Cascades Teacher program, please reach out to me and let me know.  These 3rd-year students in the teacher education program will be cleared by the district and considered trained volunteers.  They can work with students 1:1, small group, bulletin boards, classroom support, etc.  There is a specific interest expressed in Storyline as well.

Cafeteria Seating Chart: Thank you for getting these submitted.  We will start using these on Monday 2/6.  We will have labels on the tables for them when they walk in for the first week while they learn and relearn their assigned spots.  While we are on the topic, I want to highlight a really effective way to help us with this ongoing issue.  Marieka used her morning meeting time to reflect with her class on the “problems” and “solutions” in the cafeteria.  The student work for this activity is posted downstairs, and the positive impact on their behavior was already noticeable this week even before we started the assigned teaching.  The key factor is the solutions do not involve telling others how to act or behave, but they reinforce what each individual child can do to influence the group behavior.  Our entire cafeteria crew thanks you!

Report Cards: Due date = Wednesday 2/8.

MTSS Cycle 2: Wednesdays (2/8) SIW will be dedicated to your grade level Tier 1 MTSS meetings.  Slides with your meeting process will be shared after this weekend.  The Tier 2 MTSS meetings will be on Thursday (2/9).  We will use roaming subs and follow the same format as we did in the fall.  See Schedule Here  The actual meeting times (which are different from the sub coverage) are highlighted in yellow this time to hopefully avoid any confusion.

Educator Network Day (2/15) 2:00-3:15: This is just around the corner!  Please sign up in Performance Matters.  There are 15 options from which to choose and you are being asked to complete the sign-up by end of the day, Friday 2/3.

Foundational Skill Instruction: Linked here is an implementation rubric we are using district-wide to keep our progression of the foundational skills instruction.  Please familiarize yourself with the rubric and see what next steps you are ready for as you build your experience and confidence with the program.  Also, think of what you might need to help you make those next steps.

Thursday 2/2: Here is a little more detail on the day;

  • 7:15-11:30 Teacher Prep Time (Classified at Summit High School)
  • 11:30-12:15 Lunch in the library
  • 12:15-1:15 Culture of Care Workshop

Cafeteria Seating Chart: We are going to add some structure into lunchtime to help us with some group behavior support.  A paper copy of your assigned tables will be in your boxes on Friday and we would appreciate it if you could come up with a seating chart for your class that redistributes the kids to a random position (and some strategic positioning as well).  We will share a rubric with the students that spells out the desired behaviors.  We will share this with you soon, so you can be aware and help with communicating these expectations during your morning meetings.  When the grade levels accumulate enough points on the rubric they can earn their free-sit days.  Thanks for your support with this and we will start this on Monday 2/6.

Updated SOP Access to Buildings:  Our district has been working on updating the procedures for our buildings and here is the updated version; click Here if interested.

Report Cards: FYI the official turnover date in Synergy for the district is the 6th.  We communicated the 8th as our deadline to you a bit prematurely so we will honor that date if necessary, but if there is any chance we can convince you all to get your grades done by Sunday night so we can be aligned with the district rollover date, it would be in our best interests.  If you cannot get your grades done by Sunday night, then please reach out to me and let me know.  If I hear from anyone then we will keep the 8th as our deadline.  If I don’t hear from anyone then our new deadline will be Sunday at midnight so we can align with the district rollover.

Kaelynn’s Presentation: If you were unable to join Kaelynn today here is the presentation from today!

YouthTruth Survey Window extended until 2/3.

CPI Training: FYI there will be another CPI training in the gym on Thursday the 2nd.  This is just a heads-up to expect some more cars and people that day.

Winter Culminations: Below is a table of the culmination information submitted so far.  Based on what I can interpret by the submissions these should all work without creating conflict based on the time, room usage and formats. If you notice something problematic, please reach out to me and bring it to my attention.  These are also now on the google calendar.  If you still need to input your culmination info, please send me an email to let me know it’s there and be sure to work around the dates/times shown below.

1/20/23 Weekly Update

Highland Norms:  Linked here is a draft of Highland Norms.  If you have any concerns or questions regarding these norms, please make an appointment with me to share your concerns.

Valentine’s Day: Thank you for participating in the exercise on Wednesday.  As a reminder of the “why” behind this work, it is my intention to make our school as culturally responsive and inclusive as possible and that does require change.  Elevating the voices drowned out by the dominant culture is a part of this work. If you would like to read one of the policies driving this work for yourself, it’s linked here; Equity & Anti-Racism Executive Limitation.  I understand this work can be uncomfortable and discomfort often causes less-desirable reactions.  My hope is that you will use this experience and any ideas you heard to improve your practices to make them more culturally responsive.

From Kinsey Martin:

Hey there elementary team,

This idea came from a Black student in our district and is being supported by our Black Student and Family Union.

It is optional, but we’d love your help to make sure your school is represented in this activity focused on Black excellence, inclusion and belonging, and anti-racism!

Plus, this could make a fun and fitting replacement for the door-decorating Dr. Seuss activities we used to do this time of year.

YouthTruth Survey:   One more week left……Survey window closes on 1/27.  The survey takes about 15 minutes to complete.  Use the following link to access;   ytsurvey.org/hldstaff23

TAG Update: Linked is the updated list for both potentially or already identified students for TAG. Scroll down to see the key for the colors. Reminder: Heidi Thomas is now the TAG coordinator. Please be patient as she learns the ropes!

Winter (March 2023) Culmination: Please use this link to put in details for your Winter culmination requests. Please get your information in ASAP so we can get these on the calendar. I will start posting the information for the culminations to our calendar already entered this week.

February 2nd Work Day/Inservice Day Update:  There will be some maintenance work occurring on these days as they attempt to locate the broken pipe under the building.  There will be some noise but not the level of our previous construction experience.

1/13/23 Weekly Update

Highland Norms:  Linked here is a draft of Highland Norms.  If you have any concerns or questions regarding these norms, please make an appointment with me to share your concerns.

Valentine’s Day:

Let’s start by stating this is not a message to cancel Valentine’s Day.  I also want to acknowledge that we already have many practices regarding Valentine’s Day in place in our building that are culturally responsive and inclusive.

With that in mind, I would like you to take some time to think about how we address Valentine’s day in school.  Please let me re-emphasize, this is not asking you to cancel everything.  You are being asked to be a critical friend with an equity lens as you examine past practices and design for the future.

Some important considerations (there could be more but these come to my mind due to past experiences):

  • Although Valentine’s Day is recognized globally it’s not celebrated by everyone.  The reasons could be economical, religious, cultural or philosophical and it’s important we do not marginalize those reasons.
  • Minimize impact on the instructional day.  Since there is no legitimate connection between Valentine’s day and state standards, it’s imperative the impact on the instructional program is minimized (not eliminated).
  • Consider food allergies and/or dietary restrictions.  Rather than wait for a student affected by diabetes, celiac or any other health condition to be a part of your community before you make changes; design the activity to address this need now, before it’s needed.
  • Avoid the popularity contest.  If we design the activity as part of the school day, we have an obligation to control for social status; ensuring everyone is included and there is no opportunity for a student to be left out or feel less than their peers.

Thank you for taking the time to consider these things and make it a positive experience for everyone. My hope is we can share some ideas at our staff meeting on Wednesday to help everyone with their plans.

YouthTruth Survey:   Survey window closes on 1/27.  The survey takes about 15 minutes to complete.  Use the following link to access;   ytsurvey.org/hldstaff23

From Scott McDonald – IT will be making some changes to our student web filtering services on Tuesday, January 17th.  We do not anticipate a noticeable impact on access or performance.  That said, please reach out to the IT help desk if our changes restrict access to websites that are necessary for instruction.  The changes are limited to student iPad devices only.
