{"id":1039,"date":"2023-01-17T03:58:39","date_gmt":"2023-01-17T03:58:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.bend.k12.or.us\/brian.kissell\/?p=1039"},"modified":"2023-01-17T04:01:32","modified_gmt":"2023-01-17T04:01:32","slug":"1-13-23-weekly-update","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bend.k12.or.us\/brian.kissell\/2023\/01\/17\/1-13-23-weekly-update\/","title":{"rendered":"<strong>1\/13\/23 Weekly Update<\/strong>"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Highland Norms:&nbsp; <\/strong>Linked <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/document\/d\/1_ven028Bg47INYI2XzW9mfgcngF_yQd_8arQ5TAp6y0\/edit?usp=sharing\">here<\/a> is a draft of Highland Norms.&nbsp; If you have any concerns or questions regarding these norms, please make an appointment with me to share your concerns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Valentine\u2019s Day:&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Let\u2019s start by stating this is not a message to cancel Valentine\u2019s Day.&nbsp; I also want to acknowledge that we already have many practices regarding Valentine\u2019s Day in place in our building that are culturally responsive and inclusive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With that in mind, I would like you to take some time to think about how we address Valentine\u2019s day in school.\u00a0 Please let me re-emphasize, this is not asking you to cancel everything.\u00a0 You are being asked to be a critical friend with an equity lens as you examine past practices and design for the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some important considerations (there could be more but these come to my mind due to past experiences):<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Although Valentine\u2019s Day is recognized globally it\u2019s not celebrated by everyone.&nbsp; The reasons could be economical, religious, cultural or philosophical and it\u2019s important we do not marginalize those reasons.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Minimize impact on the instructional day.\u00a0 Since there is no legitimate connection between Valentine\u2019s day and state standards, it\u2019s imperative the impact on the instructional program is minimized (not eliminated).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Consider food allergies and\/or dietary restrictions.\u00a0 Rather than wait for a student affected by diabetes, celiac or any other health condition to be a part of your community before you make changes; design the activity to address this need now, before it\u2019s needed.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Avoid the popularity contest.&nbsp; If we design the activity as part of the school day, we have an obligation to control for social status; ensuring everyone is included and there is no opportunity for a student to be left out or feel less than their peers.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thank you for taking the time to consider these things and make it a positive experience for everyone.
