{"id":474,"date":"2019-08-24T01:12:30","date_gmt":"2019-08-24T01:12:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.bend.k12.or.us\/brian.kissell\/?p=474"},"modified":"2019-08-24T01:12:30","modified_gmt":"2019-08-24T01:12:30","slug":"8-23-19-weekly-update","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bend.k12.or.us\/brian.kissell\/2019\/08\/24\/8-23-19-weekly-update\/","title":{"rendered":"8\/23\/19 Weekly Update"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I want to start by thanking Lorin, Cami, Marina, and JJ for joining me on Tuesday at our leadership academy.&nbsp; We spent the majority of the day with Mary Ehrenworth and my head is still spinning with all the information she shared.&nbsp; As many of you already know, she is incredibly inspiring and I really enjoyed the opportunity to be a part of the energy she created yesterday.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I have a little homework for you! Don\u2019t worry everything is fairly short and to-the-point and there is no due-date; just read these selections when you have a little time.&nbsp; These are meant to be validating, inspiring and focussing.  As we plunge into the school year, the day-to-day demands can often make it difficult to see our work from a higher perspective.&nbsp; These reading pieces and short video are intended to serve as reminders for the greater work we are doing with our students.  In my humble opinion, the words \u201chighly effective\u201d could be interchanged with \u201cStoryline\u201d, or even more specifically, \u201cHighland\u201d teachers.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Core Beliefs of Highly Effective Teachers<\/strong><\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;In their book <em>10 Mindframes for Visible Learning,<\/em>John Hattie and Klaus Zierer argue that what teachers believe about instruction drives what happens in their classrooms. Here are the \u201cmindframes\u201d Hattie and Zierer found in highly effective teachers:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8211;&nbsp; I am an evaluator of my impact on student learning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8211;&nbsp; I see assessment as informing my impact and next steps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8211;&nbsp; I collaborate with my peers about my conceptions of progress and my impact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8211;&nbsp; I am a change agent and believe all students can improve.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8211;&nbsp; I strive to provide my students with challenge and not merely have them \u201cdo their best.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8211;&nbsp; I give feedback and help students understand it, and I interpret and act on feedback given to me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8211;&nbsp; I engage as much in dialogue as monologue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8211;&nbsp; I explicitly inform students from the outset what success looks like.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8211;&nbsp; I build relationships and trust so that learning can occur, where it is safe to make mistakes and learn from others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8211;&nbsp; I identify and build on my students\u2019 prior experiences and initial learning levels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>10 Mindframes for Visible Learning <\/em>by John Hattie and Klaus Zierer (Routledge, 2018); see Jenn David-Lang\u2019s detailed summary of this book at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.themainidea.net\/\">www.themainidea.net<\/a>.&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Growth Mindest Message<br>This article highlights research supporting the use of a growth mindset education in schools.\u00a0 The key takeaway message is this; <strong>Research shows Growth Mindset works!\u00a0 Keep it up!  <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.edweek.org\/ew\/articles\/2019\/08\/07\/national-study-shows-how-a-simple-growth.html?cmp=eml-enl-eu-news1&amp;M=58904190&amp;U=2344102&amp;UUID=a4057847700036c02e135ff78eb2574d\">Growth Mindset<\/a><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This piece provides some great insights to help us support all students in their work of becoming better students regardless of any challenges they may face.\u00a0 It dispells some common assumptions and provides some great guidance for teachers.  Key takeaway, we must continue to focus on the strengths of the child and positive inclusion instruction.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.edutopia.org\/article\/dispelling-myths-around-learning-disabilities\">Dispelling Myths Around Learning Disabilities<\/a><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Executive function remains one of the most reliable predictors of success in academics\u2014and in life. Watch this brief video to see the research on what it is, and how to cultivate it. \u2708\ufe0f <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/RX4qYsbZ8d\">pic.twitter.com\/RX4qYsbZ8d<\/a><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Finally, I want to continue to provide resources to support the use of feedback to promote student learning.&nbsp; Click below for some brief tips on increasing the effectiveness of feedback in your classrooms.  <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/document\/d\/15Em60n8HSva5qKsISZrkUhaL54l26WpgsoT3Ukit-yA\/edit?usp=sharing\">Effective Feedback<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Back to School BBQ&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thank you to Misha and Shane for offering to host again this year.&nbsp; Please be sure to reply to the evite so we can get an accurate headcount for food.&nbsp; This event will be after our Ice Cream Social.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Safety Drills<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By law, we must conduct monthly fire drill evacuations, with a few other safety drills throughout the year.\u00a0 Shawna and I have already plugged in our drill dates into the calendar.  The first 3 are on the Highland Staff Calendar so you can prepare your students ahead of time.\u00a0 The remainder will be unannounced at various times of the day.  For the unannounced drills, we do our best to avoid major disruptions to your classroom experiences by examining the events on the calendar, however, please understand we still must attempt to adhere to our scheduled drill times as possible.\u00a0 Thanks for your understanding.  Our leadership meetings will have a standing agenda item and task to examine safety practices as a school site.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/spreadsheets\/d\/13WFQWSmRpNYbg_Qplpr-d7XRu58G9-TYMyqfpnU4Y5A\/edit?usp=sharing\"><strong>2019-2020 Master Schedule<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There were a few more fixes\/tweaks made to these documents based on some feedback, so thanks for bringing that to my attention.\u00a0 I am hoping to provide EA coverage, recess, etc. soon (sorry it&#8217;s taking a while but it&#8217;s a complex document).  Keep your eyes peeled and thanks for your patience.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>EA start up week schedules<\/strong> &#8211; If you have questions about your hours during the start up week, please get in touch with me to see how we can best plan your hours.\u00a0 The 7:30 breakfast on Tuesday is optional for EAs.
