{"id":607,"date":"2020-05-23T01:06:19","date_gmt":"2020-05-23T01:06:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.bend.k12.or.us\/brian.kissell\/?p=607"},"modified":"2020-05-23T01:10:47","modified_gmt":"2020-05-23T01:10:47","slug":"memorial-day-weekend-update","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bend.k12.or.us\/brian.kissell\/2020\/05\/23\/memorial-day-weekend-update\/","title":{"rendered":"Memorial Day Weekend Update"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Social Distancing reminder whenever on campus.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Stay 6 feet apart.<\/li><li>Wash hands often.<\/li><li>Wipe down the surfaces you use.<\/li><li>Know you can report anyone to me who is not observing these guidelines.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Meetings:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>All Staff&nbsp; &#8211; Wednesday 3:00&nbsp;<\/li><li>Grade Level Check-Ins;<ul><li>Kinder &#8211; <strong><em>Do you still want to meet on Monday at 1 or do you want a different time this week?<\/em><\/strong><\/li><li>5\/26 Tuesday &#8211; 2nd\/3rd -2:45<\/li><li>5\/27 Wednesday &#8211; 4th\/5th- 1:00<\/li><li>5\/28 Thursday&nbsp; &#8211; 1st &#8211; 3:00<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>5th Grade Graduation<\/strong> &#8211; If you are interested in the nitty-gritty details feel free to check this out; <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/document\/d\/1NX5xzfWXT3E98HcXBVPLGB8E2G45gm4vzmPzA0hmDYk\/edit?usp=sharing\">5th Grad Plans<\/a>.&nbsp; I can provide a staff-specific one later if necessary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Final Week of School<\/strong> &#8211; Please be sure to read the newsletter to families, so you see what they read about the final week.&nbsp; I have clarified the following;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Last day of instruction &#8211; Friday, June 5th<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Last day of School &#8211; Thursday, June 11th<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>2nd-5th-grade iPads <\/strong>&#8211; These can stay home.\u00a0 Parents are officially notified in 5\/22\/20 Newsletter and there is a letter from Skip for families to read.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Class Placements:<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thank you for your work on the surveys.&nbsp; As of 6:00 pm Friday evening the first round is done and classes will be ready for examination next week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Insights from Psychology and Neuroscience<\/strong><\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">(Originally titled \u201cThe Sciences of Teaching\u201d)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;\u201cTeachers shape young lives and build young brains every day,\u201d say Carol Ann Tomlinson (University of Virginia\/Charlottesville) and author\/consultant David Sousa in this article in <em>Educational Leadership<\/em>. \u201cThe more we know about the how and why of doing those two things, the more the learners in our care will benefit.\u201d Tomlinson and Sousa summarize some of the key findings from the psychology and neuroscience of learning \u2013 and suggest how schools can tap them to continuously improve teaching and learning:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;\u2022 <em>Growth mindset<\/em> \u2013 Learning is boosted when educators and parents are aware of their own mindsets, explain, teach, and reflect often with students on how growth mindset works, establish a conducive classroom culture, and empower students to control their own metacognition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;\u2022 <em>Prior knowledge<\/em> \u2013 Teachers must constantly connect what\u2019s being learned to what students already know \u2013 and be aware of the variations in each student\u2019s fund of knowledge. It\u2019s helpful when learning units are built around big ideas and key concepts tied to students\u2019 interests and insights.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;\u2022 <em>Social-emotional skills<\/em> \u2013 Effective teachers cover knowledge and skills and link them to their emotional significance, crafting assignments that ask students to use knowledge and skills to solve real-world problems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;\u2022 <em>Diversity<\/em> \u2013 The best schools are keenly aware of the panoply of differences in each classroom, make students partners in creating learning environments that work for them, and help students build on their strengths and work through their learning difficulties. It\u2019s especially helpful when students have voice and choice in their learning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ascd.org\/publications\/educational-leadership\/may20\/vol77\/num08\/The-Sciences-of-Teaching.aspx\">\u201cThe Sciences of Teaching\u201d<\/a> by Carol Ann Tomlinson and David Sousa in <em>Educational Leadership<\/em>, May 2020 (Vol. 77, #8, pp. 14-20); the authors can be reached at cat3y@virginia.edu and davidsnj@aol.com.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Distance Learning Resources<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Everyday Math Resources &#8211; Important!!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/file\/d\/1CjJZGRX55HWb3GLf7ijVWPXjRaOr4I6p\/view?usp=sharing\">Summer Learning Guidance<\/a> &#8211; I might be able to fund a few people for the limited access for this &#8211; depending upon interest level.\u00a0 If interested and you are certain you will use it, please email me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Julie\u2019s Weekly Update from 5\/22\/20<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We have learned some pretty cool things on this journey.&nbsp; One thing we have learned is that we had to pivot incredibly quickly to distance learning and that constraints can lead to remarkable innovation.&nbsp; <em>\u201cWe can\u2019t be creative if we refuse to be confused.\u201d Margaret Wheatley <\/em>&nbsp;The productive struggle that all of us have gone through has led to creativity and innovative ideas.&nbsp; Think back to where we were on March 11th and where we are now\u2026.just WOW!!&nbsp; It is amazing to watch all of you and how innovative you have been.&nbsp; Thank you for all you do.&nbsp; You are very appreciated.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We want everyone to know that there are several committees working together thinking about different scenarios for what school will look like and what professional learning will look like in the fall and are awaiting more guidance from the state before making final decisions.&nbsp; Your administrator will communicate with you as more information becomes available.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many of you are starting to plan for the summer and fall. Here are a few projects in the works for re-entry:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>For the summer, we have teams working on:<\/strong><ul><li>Summer Choice Boards are almost complete!!!&nbsp; We have created a board with fun, engaging activities for families.&nbsp; We have built one for K-2 and one for 3-5.&nbsp; They will be available in English and Spanish. We will have these available to share before the end of our share at conferences.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li><li>Several classes for teachers will be offered for OSU Cascades credit this summer.&nbsp; You will receive information on this next week.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li><strong>For the fall,&nbsp; we have teams working on:<\/strong><ul><li>An early literacy boot camp, diagnostic assessments, how to use Lexia in the classroom, identifying priority standards and creating a scope and sequence for literacy instruction and guidelines for literacy instruction moving forward.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li><li>Diagnostic math assessments with targeted lessons to meet whole class, small group, or individual needs based on the data.
