Students are currently writing truly fantastic “I am From” poems. I can’t wait to read their final products.

Next week we’ll be doing OAKS reading testing. Making sure your child comes to school well-rested will be extra important! If your child wants to bring a snack or gum to keep their brains happy during the test, they are free to do so.

Jan 21 – Jan 24

Wow, January has just flown by!

6th grade will be holding conferences 3:15 – 7:15 Wednesday and Thursday NEXT WEEK! Look for a bright pink info letter with all the details coming home Thursday the 23rd! We hope to see everyone there to talk about the amazing progress your student is making in the 6th grade!

This weeks language arts homework can be found by clicking here Caps Test A. It’s a review of the capitalization skills we learned earlier in the year!

We just started reading the short story “Charles” in language arts today and will continue that as well as writing great paragraphs for the rest of the week. We’re currently working on perfecting our supporting details. Students’ writing is really starting to impress me! We’ve got a great crop of creative, innovative, and hard working writers!

Coming up:

  • Wed & Thurs the 29th and 30th conferences from 3:15 to 7:15. Drop in at the library!
  • Friday Jan 31st NO SCHOOL MIDTERM GRADES

Jan 14 2014

Happy New Year!

This Wednesday’s homework is attached here: HW LA 1-15 2014

Homework is due Friday Jan 17th just like always!

We have been working hard on writing since we got back from break and I have seen some truly amazing topic sentences being written.

I will be gone on Thursday for a meeting in Bend, but students will be in good hands with Ms. Hausman.

FYI conferences are coming up on Jan 29th and 30th! Hope to see you there!

Dec 10 – Dec 13

It’s HOMEWORK WEDNESDAY!

Students have to write missing topic sentences or ending sentences for three paragraphs. Assignment P1W What’s Missing. Students also need to write a complete paragraph about something they have learned in science so far this year.

We are busy learning how to write great paragraphs in language arts right now. Students know that they need a topic sentence, at least three supporting details, and an ending sentence. Here is a link to the Parts of Paragraph in case they can’t remember what each part’s role is!

In social studies we are becoming film makers while also continuing to study Mesopotamia. Students recently have been working on a short film using images and video from the library’s Hunger Games activities.

Dec 2 – 6

Wow, these last three weeks before Winter Break are flying by already!

We are currently collecting canned/boxed foods at school for leadership’s canned food drive! 6th grade is competing against 7th and 8th for an ice cream party! We will be collecting canned food from now until December 19th.

Language arts students have HOMEWORK due FRIDAY Dec 6th! Their assignment is to write a 5 sentence (minimum) paragraph about their favorite food. They need to make sure their paragraph has a topic sentence, at least 3 supporting details, and an ending (conclusion) sentence. They are practicing writing organized paragraphs.

In social studies we are continuing our study of Mesopotamia and have moved from the ancient civilization of Sumer to the civilizations of Babylonia and Assyria. Students are also learning how to create iMovies so they can participate in a movie competition sponsored by C-Span. Check it out here!

Nov 18 – 21

It’s CIVIL WAR WEEK at LPMS!

Tuesday Nov 19th: Civil War Dance 2:30 – 4:00

In language arts students will be turning in their cumulative reading projects on Tuesday and taking a reading comprehension test over their novel on Wednesday. Students will be allowed to use their books on the test. We will be wrapping up our novel unit on Thursday and starting a poetry and short story unit when we return from Thanksgiving Break!

In social studies, students have been working hard at answering text dependent questions based around our Mesopotamia unit of study. Students will be looking more into Mesopotamian religion by examining Ziggurats as well as other aspects of the polytheistic Mesopotamians.

Thursday is Civil War Dress Up Day. Dress up in your best wacky Ducks/Beavers/Platypus outfit! There will be an assembly that afternoon!

Grades are DUE Thursday which means all MISSING WORK needs to be turned in BEFORE Thursday. Please email if you have any questions about your student’s grade. 🙂

Nov 12 -15

Hopefully everyone had a restful Veteran’s Day. Thank you to all who are currently serving or have served our country in the past!

This week in language arts we’ll be working on our reading projects as the end of the trimester is rapidly approaching! All students in Ms. Turrell’s language arts classes will have some type of project due Tuesday Nov 19th. They need to have their novels finished and be using the class time given, as well as time at home, to finish their projects. Given that they have a big project due soon, their HW this week will be to work on that project.

In social studies, we have just started our study of the wonderful ancient civilization of Mesopotamia. Did you know they invented the world’s FIRST flushing toilets? Pretty ingenious! Students will be working on text dependent questioning this week to help them with reading and writing skills they’ll need for next year’s Smarter Balanced Assessment (replacement of the OAKS). Students will have an end of tri “quiz” on the pieces of Mesopotamia we’ve studied so far next Wednesday.

Dates to keep an eye on:

Tuesday November 19th: Civil War Dance 2:30-4:00 ($3 if you dress up, $5 if you don’t)

Thursday November 21: Civil War Dress up Day & Assembly ALSO end of Tri 1!

Friday Nov 22 – Sunday Dec 1: Thanksgiving Break, No School!

It’s Homework Wednesday again!

STUDENTS DID NOT HAVE THIS HOMEWORK ASSIGNED TODAY DUE TO A VOCABULARY TEST. IT MAY BE ASSIGNED AS IN CLASS WORK, BUT IS NO LONGER HOMEWORK FOR THIS WEEK.

For homework this week, students need to write 5 sentences using Sentence Pattern #1. The sentences need to be neat, creative, and at least 11 words long. They need to avoid RIP words, use correct grammar and capitalization, AND turn it in by Friday!

Sentence Pattern #1 is “Starting with a Negative”
