March 4 – March 8

It was a busy exciting week last week! We had a red carpet premiere of our Golden Goblet puppet movies in language arts as well as recreated life in the hierarchy of Egyptian society in social studies with an interact. Students were randomly chosen as pharaohs, nobles, peasants, as well as other positions in life and had to complete a task as those characters. I think everyone decided that it was no fun having a pharaoh ordering them around!

This week is going to be a busy one as well!

In language arts we have started a new unit making our own personal dictionaries with different descriptive words as well as sentence patterns to spice up our writing. Writing is definitely a challenge for our class, but with we’ve made so much progress as writers since the beginning of the year, we can’t stop now!

In social studies we are wrapping up our Egypt Unit and have a unit test on Tuesday that students should be studying for! We will be doing a mini unit on India starting Thursday.

Coming up:

This week we will be having the career fair on Wednesday March 6th, which I am actually participating in as the “teacher”. Students will have the opportunity to travel around to different booths and learn about potential future careers. It’s a great opportunity for kids to start thinking about how the choices they make during middle school will affect what happens only a couple years down the road! Ask your 6th grader about it Wednesday night!

Next week! Conferences are just around the corner! From 3:15-7:15 pm, on Tues March 12th and Wed March 13th, Ms. Thill, Ms. Welsh, and I will all be holding drop in conferences during that time. I hope to see everyone there! If you can’t make it, feel free to schedule a conference by calling or emailing at any time 🙂

Feb 18 – Feb 22

I’m sorry this post is so late in the week. My dear grandmother passed away on Wednesday so I spent the week with my family and only just returned to school today.

We are currently filming our puppet shows in Language Arts. I am hoping for a puppet movie premiere day on Monday or Tuesday of next week.

In Social Studies we will finish up our Egypt Unit this week and next week and plan tentatively for a social studies test on Tuesday Mar 5th depending on how far we get next week.

Our iPads have been an exciting addition to the classroom and we have been getting used to using the different apps to enhance our learning. One app we are really excited about is called edmodo, and is a platform where I can give quizzes, upload assignments, showcase student work, and take polls, among other fantastic features! Here is a link to the district website that goes over the guidelines for edmodo use in the classroom! edmodo

Remember, spring conferences are coming up! Look for a flyer coming home in the next couple weeks advertising the details and schedule for those conferences. Hope to see everyone there!

Feb 11 – Feb 15

Wow, February sure is flying by!! Theme of the week: “Reading is THINKING!”

We will be having a busy week in language arts this week! We are finishing up our novel, The Golden Goblet finally! We will be reading chapters 15 and 16 this week and then doing wrap up activities the rest of the week. If our iPads come in (fingers crossed everyone!) we will be making mini-movies using our favorite scenes from the book. We will start this activity Thursday and Friday. Only 15 spelling words this week, be sure to study! Spelling Test 5

In social studies, we are continuing to study Egypt. We finished up reading a brief overview of the different kingdoms today as well as our Egypt Webquest. Some timeline activities as well as some writing activities lie in store for us as the week goes on!

We also just started a brand new round of reading comprehension today during 5th pd. We will be working on different reading comprehension techniques and skills to make us even better readers! Teaching reading is my passion, and I’m so excited for this class!

Events this week:

  • ALL 6th grade teachers (Turrell, Welsh, & Thill) are gone on Wednesday for a training in Bend. We will be learning about some great teaching and learning techniques we can share with the kiddos!
  • Valentines Dance this Wednesday: 4 – 5:30 pm, $5.00 to get in!

Feb 4 – Feb 8

Happy first week of February!                                                                                       Midterm grades will go out during advisory on Wednesday with all students!

This week in language arts we are continuing to read our novel, “The Golden Goblet”. The plot is definitely picking up and the suspense is rising!

We are reading Ch. 12-13 over the next three days. Many students have journal responses they need to catch up on and complete so I extended our unit to include two catch up days this week (Thurs & Fri).

We are also onto our Spelling Test # 4. The words are definitely harder than last week! Studying at home would be a smart choice for many students 🙂

In social studies we are continuing to study Egypt. We’re reading a little about the rulers of Egypt this week as well as completing a web quest using an educational &  interactive PBS NOVA website.

We are also finishing up Easy CBM testing with reading fluency one minute tests.

Jan 28 – Feb 1

In Language Arts this week we are continuing to read the novel, “The Golden Goblet”, which ties into our Egypt Unit currently going on in Social Studies. The book takes place in Ancient Egypt and is about a boy around the 6th grade age. He realizes his evil half-brother, Gebu, is stealing gold from the tombs of the dead and has to find a way to bring Gebu to justice.

We are reading Chapters 8-11 this week and students have Journal Response #4 and Journal Response #5 due by Friday.

Students also have an advertising flyer due in Social Studies on Friday                           Download Assignment: Travel to Ancient Egypt Flyer
