Yet, some students struggle with this skill. Some students cannot find the main ideas and details, other students write so much that the summary turns into a retell with superfluous details included.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The strategy of \u201cGist Writing\u201d is an evidence-based strategy that can help all students tackle this important skill.&nbsp; It gets students into reading, writing, thinking, and communicating about summarizing text.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Step 1:<\/strong> Provide a text for students to read. &nbsp;To begin, a shorter text is best and as the students gain expertise in the skill longer text can be provided.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Step 2:<\/strong> Students identify in a phrase <em>who<\/em> or <em>what<\/em> the text is about<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Step 3:<\/strong> In 2 or 3 phrases that contain ideas from the text<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Step 4:<\/strong> Combine the phrases from step 2 and 3 together into a sentence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Step 5:<\/strong> Edit or &#8220;shrink&#8221;the sentence to be between 10 and 15 words.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Example:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Students read the follow text on Egyptian Gods and Goddesses<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"718\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.bend.k12.or.us\/dean.richards\/files\/2023\/02\/Screenshot-2023-02-16-at-2.15.07-PM-1024x718.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1025\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.bend.k12.or.us\/dean.richards\/files\/2023\/02\/Screenshot-2023-02-16-at-2.15.07-PM-1024x718.png 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.bend.k12.or.us\/dean.richards\/files\/2023\/02\/Screenshot-2023-02-16-at-2.15.07-PM-300x210.png 300w, https:\/\/blogs.bend.k12.or.us\/dean.richards\/files\/2023\/02\/Screenshot-2023-02-16-at-2.15.07-PM-768x538.png 768w, https:\/\/blogs.bend.k12.or.us\/dean.richards\/files\/2023\/02\/Screenshot-2023-02-16-at-2.15.07-PM-1536x1076.png 1536w, https:\/\/blogs.bend.k12.or.us\/dean.richards\/files\/2023\/02\/Screenshot-2023-02-16-at-2.15.07-PM-428x300.png 428w, https:\/\/blogs.bend.k12.or.us\/dean.richards\/files\/2023\/02\/Screenshot-2023-02-16-at-2.15.07-PM.png 1658w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" start=\"2\">\n<li>Name the who or what the paragraph is about in a brief phrase<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-blue-color has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\">Ancient Egyptian Religion<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" start=\"3\">\n<li>Identify two or three important details about the topic<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-blue-color has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\">They believed in an afterlife<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-blue-color has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\">People believed in several groups of gods<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-blue-color has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\">The main gods were Amon-Re, Osiris, Isis and Horus<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" start=\"4\">\n<li>Combine the phrases for a create a sentence.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-blue-color has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\">The Ancient Egyptian religion believed in several groups of gods including Amon-Re, Osiris, Isis and Horus that provided the afterlife. (20 words)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" start=\"5\">\n<li>\u201cShrink\u201d the paragraph by stating the main idea<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-blue-color has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\">The Ancient Egyptian <s>religion<\/s> believed in <s>several<\/s> groups of gods <s>including Amon-Re, Osiris, Isis and Horus <\/s>that provided the afterlife.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-light-gray-background-color has-background has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">The Ancient Egyptians believed in groups of gods that provided the afterlife. (12 words)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ready for the next level?
