Those teachers make me want to do better. \u201c <\/strong><\/em> Bend-LaPine Student Excellence and Equity 2019 talk session<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We all know the pressure to meet the standards and to get all the content taught in the school year.&nbsp; With the pandemic, many of us feel we have to teach more than a year\u2019s content in one year.  On top of that, our students are exhibiting outward behaviors that many of us have not seen in our classrooms before. These behaviors stem from a sense of <em>not <\/em>belonging, hinder the academic performance, and work to increase the learning gaps teachers are trying to close.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"403\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.bend.k12.or.us\/dean.richards\/files\/2022\/12\/Screen-Shot-2022-12-06-at-4.06.22-PM-1024x403.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-901\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.bend.k12.or.us\/dean.richards\/files\/2022\/12\/Screen-Shot-2022-12-06-at-4.06.22-PM-1024x403.png 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.bend.k12.or.us\/dean.richards\/files\/2022\/12\/Screen-Shot-2022-12-06-at-4.06.22-PM-300x118.png 300w, https:\/\/blogs.bend.k12.or.us\/dean.richards\/files\/2022\/12\/Screen-Shot-2022-12-06-at-4.06.22-PM-768x303.png 768w, https:\/\/blogs.bend.k12.or.us\/dean.richards\/files\/2022\/12\/Screen-Shot-2022-12-06-at-4.06.22-PM-500x197.png 500w, https:\/\/blogs.bend.k12.or.us\/dean.richards\/files\/2022\/12\/Screen-Shot-2022-12-06-at-4.06.22-PM.png 1452w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-white-background-color has-background wp-block-paragraph\">In the book <strong><em>Belonging Through a Culture of Dignity: The Keys to Successful Equity Implementation<\/em> by Floyd Cobb and John Krownapple, <\/strong>the authors make the case that schools need to focus on creating a culture of belonging before content is delivered. They define <strong>belonging as a sense where one feels appreciated, validated, accepted and treated fairly<\/strong> within an environment. When students feel that they belong, they aren&#8217;t worried and distracted about being treated as a stereotype&#8230; instead they are confident that they are seen as a human being.  <strong>Belonging is a basic need<\/strong>.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"471\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.bend.k12.or.us\/dean.richards\/files\/2022\/12\/Screen-Shot-2022-12-06-at-4.06.06-PM-1024x471.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-902\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.bend.k12.or.us\/dean.richards\/files\/2022\/12\/Screen-Shot-2022-12-06-at-4.06.06-PM-1024x471.png 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.bend.k12.or.us\/dean.richards\/files\/2022\/12\/Screen-Shot-2022-12-06-at-4.06.06-PM-300x138.png 300w, https:\/\/blogs.bend.k12.or.us\/dean.richards\/files\/2022\/12\/Screen-Shot-2022-12-06-at-4.06.06-PM-768x353.png 768w, https:\/\/blogs.bend.k12.or.us\/dean.richards\/files\/2022\/12\/Screen-Shot-2022-12-06-at-4.06.06-PM-500x230.png 500w, https:\/\/blogs.bend.k12.or.us\/dean.richards\/files\/2022\/12\/Screen-Shot-2022-12-06-at-4.06.06-PM.png 1444w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-white-background-color has-background wp-block-paragraph\">Cobb and Krownapple explain that <strong>belonging and dignity go together. <\/strong> They have a cause-and effect relationship in that we build belonging by honoring dignity. The book study, included webinars with John Krownapple, small group discussion and culminating of projects designed to create a sense of belonging among staff and students. Some projected focused creating a culture of belonging among staff.  Other projects focused on creating belonging in the classroom.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>#ConnectionB4Content<\/strong> is one of the of projects that came out of the book study.  You can be part of the&nbsp;#ConnectionsB4Content&nbsp;Project.&nbsp;Visit this<strong> <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/forms.gle\/G9inwn62tesR3U3a8\">link <\/a>and pick 2 or 3 new strategies you will try. We will check in with you about the strategies you chose and how you feel it affected your classroom culture.&nbsp; The first 30 people to complete the project will receive a t-shirt. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Book Study starting in January 2023!<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Join the Central Oregon Regional Educator Network for Belonging Through a Culture of Dignity: A Book Study beginning January 2023! It was a great opportunity for the group to engage in rich conversations about instruction. He brings outside professionals, lawyers and judges to speak with APGOV class.
