To show that you understand the important ideas in a text of any length or variety.\u00a0 To make the author\u2019s purpose and methods clear to someone who has not read the piece.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How to Write a Summary<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Read the piece ACTIVELY, which means:<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Underline, highlight, make notes on the important information<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Look up unfamiliar words<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Reread if necessary to make sure you understand the content<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Write<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Read and take notes on the<\/strong>\u00a0<span style=\"color: #0000ff\"><a href=\"http:\/\/worldbookonline.com\/advanced\/article?id=ar091620&amp;st=cannibal\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff\"> Cannibal article<\/span><\/a><\/span>&#8211;To take notes on the document rather than on paper, follow the instructions below:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Highlight and copy the article. including the citation information at the bottom<\/li>\n<li>Open a blank document&#8211;Google Docs, Word, Pages, whatever<\/li>\n<li>Save the document as Cannibal article<\/li>\n<li>Paste the article into the document<\/li>\n<li>Use underlining, change of text color, and insertion of comments to note important info<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>See my notes and highlights <span style=\"color: #0000ff\"><a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/document\/d\/1bMQOV8o6RqI5PQIzQucmFwHuC1lVL95s871-R3c32GU\/edit?usp=sharing\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff\">here<\/span><\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Rules to follow when writing a summary:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Write in the present tense.<\/li>\n<li>Include the author, article title (in quotation marks), and source of article (in italics) in the first sentence<\/li>\n<li>Be concise&#8211;summary should be shorter than the original<\/li>\n<li>Include info in the order it appears in the original<\/li>\n<li>Use your own words<\/li>\n<li>Use \u201c\u201d around any of the author\u2019s original words<\/li>\n<li>Leave out your opinions, ideas, interpretations<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Format<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>First sentence:<\/strong>\u00a0 thesis&#8211;\u00a0 <span style=\"color: #ff0000\"><strong>Author\u2019s name, article\u2019s name, source of article, <span style=\"color: #0000ff\"><a href=\"http:\/\/teachersites.schoolworld.com\/webpages\/GSTOUGHTON\/usefuldocuments.cfm?subpage=965181\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff\">action verb<\/span><\/a><\/span>, main idea(s)<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\nWade C. Pendelton, in his <em>World Book Advanced<\/em> encyclopedia entry\u00a0 \u201cCannibal,\u201d explains when, where and why different cultures practiced cannibalism. Cannibals are people who eat human flesh and existed as many as 500,000 years ago in all parts of the world.\u00a0 They ate flesh for religious and traditional reasons and usually ate only the parts of the body they considered important.\u00a0 Some reasons they ate humans were to show respect to dead friends and family, to insult conquered enemies, and to gain qualities such as courage and wisdom.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Practice 1:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>In small groups (no more than 4) ACTIVELY read the first 4 paragraphs of <span style=\"color: #0000ff\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2013\/09\/08\/magazine\/who-made-that-catchers-mask.html?ref=magazine\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff\">this<\/span><\/a><\/span> article.
