See these flyers <a href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/file\/d\/1RgfZcKqf6qA_b8meVY5aycA8oxFQo0Yv\/view?usp=sharing\">K-2 session<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/file\/d\/1WDaMHHgOPyzLuhOShUU1HKLFJAsFUHfn\/view?usp=sharing\">3-5 session<\/a>.&nbsp;<br>They have agreed to save 10 spots in each class for educators in Crook, Deschutes, Jefferson and Lake Counties, with our Central Oregon STEM Hub covering the <strong>stipend<\/strong> for participation and workshop materials.&nbsp;<br><a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/forms\/d\/e\/1FAIpQLScWIOieoGyb5MGudOUByUWkta5ew1wMzF-xDJ5bUVZbdqjNiQ\/viewform\">Link to register for K-2 session<\/a> &#8211; almost full, so sign up ASAP!<br><a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/forms\/d\/e\/1FAIpQLScWIOieoGyb5MGudOUByUWkta5ew1wMzF-xDJ5bUVZbdqjNiQ\/viewform\">Link to register for 3-5 session<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Supporting English Learners<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Tips for Supporting Newcomer Students<\/strong><br><strong><em>Low prep strategies<\/em> <\/strong>that make <strong><em>a big impact<\/em>:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Rate of Speech<\/strong>: slow down speech, just a little.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Comprehensible Input<\/strong>: Make content visual whenever possible: an object, a picture, or a drawing to go with new vocabulary or a new concept being taught, pictures alongside step-by-step directions, demonstrating or modeling explicitly what students need to do along with the verbal directions, using gestures and pointing to objects and pictures to support comprehension.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Check for Understanding<\/strong>: Check for comprehension with simple responses such as thumbs up or down.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Consideration on using translated curriculum materials for newcomers:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s important to affirm and acknowledge a child\u2019s native language and use that language to support teaching and learning. This should be considered thoughtfully, and on an individual basis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Literacy in 1st Language<\/strong>: Before a student receives materials in their first language, the student\u2019s literacy skills in that language need to be understood. Strong verbal skills in their 1st language doesn\u2019t imply strong literacy skills in that language.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>2nd Language Acquisition:<\/strong> Translated materials should not take away opportunities that arise during regular classroom instruction, such as opportunities to collaborate with peers, opportunities to use peers as language models, and opportunities to practice English with scaffolded support from the teacher.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Belonging and Inclusion:<\/strong> Productive struggle in learning English is part of the language acquisition process. Participating with peers and being included in lessons happening for everyone in the classroom is a better alternative to a student working in isolation with translated materials. A smile and the feeling of belonging can be understood in any language.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The need to support newcomers is heard, understood and recognized.
