A parent letter is also included to help explain changes to families and caregivers.&nbsp; This letter will be translated.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Math Happenings<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Oregon State Board of Education just adopted new math standards. Find out more on the<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.bend.k12.or.us\/elementary-curriculum-instruction\/math\/math-standards\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> Math Standards Tab<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>OAKS will now allow math manipulatives! <\/strong>&nbsp;It is detailed in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oregon.gov\/ode\/educator-resources\/assessment\/Documents\/accessibility_manual.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Oregon Accessibility Manual<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Table 2.4 on page 19 gives a general description and administration guidelines.<\/li><li>Appendix F on page 113 gives an allowable list of manipulatives and a process through which additional manipulatives may be considered.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Supporting English Learners<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Fine Tune Think\/Pair\/Share:<\/strong> <br>Do your emergent bilinguals participate in partner talk during pair-shares?&nbsp; Many will hang back, feeling self-conscious about their language and let their partner do all or most of the talking.&nbsp; Try giving everyone a few moments to think about their responses and wait for the signal to begin talking; this will allow all students more time to construct a response.&nbsp; Research indicates that extended think time will result in everyone\u2019s response being longer and more thoughtful.&nbsp; Another hint: change-up who goes first so that each partner gets ample opportunity to lead the conversation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Inclusive Practices Spotlight<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What do INCLUSIVE PRACTICES look like in <strong><em><strong><em>equity and community<\/em><\/strong>?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Every student has a general education teacher.<\/li><li>There are no semantic barriers or labels assigned to classrooms or groups of students (&#8220;Life Skills kids,&#8221; &#8220;behavior classroom,&#8221; etc.)<\/li><li>All students have the opportunity to participate in extracurricular activities.<\/li><li>Decisions about instructional settings are determined on the basis of student needs and not on the basis of labels or available services.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Please read more on the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.bend.k12.or.us\/elementary-curriculum-instruction\/inclusive-practices\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Inclusive Practices page.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Technology<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Research &amp; Safe Searching<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>It\u2019s important to guide elementary students when it\u2019s time for research.<\/li><li>When they\u2019re not looking at books from the library, show students where to look on iPads:<ul><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.worldbookonline.com\/wb\/products?ed=all&amp;gr=Welcome+Bend-Lapine+School+District+1\">WorldBook Online<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/bls.discoveryeducation.com\/public:session\/login?next=http%3A%2F%2Fbls%2Ediscoveryeducation%2Ecom\">Discovery Education<\/a> are excellent sources! Students can access these via Clever or through the apps.
