Brad shared that the dollars raised from this tax would be part of the 2021-22 budget and that the state is currently setting the rules for how school districts will be able to use these dollars.  He shared with me that he predicts the district will be able to be use the dollars to support the big ideas Shay shared in his April 5th Budget email-smaller class sizes, increased health and safety services, more learning time, and a well-rounded education.   <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.bend.k12.or.us\/gary.defrang\/files\/2019\/05\/IMG_2297.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-760\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.bend.k12.or.us\/gary.defrang\/files\/2019\/05\/IMG_2297.jpg 640w, https:\/\/blogs.bend.k12.or.us\/gary.defrang\/files\/2019\/05\/IMG_2297-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><figcaption>Our Kindergarten Open House was a huge success!  We had a great turnout of future Lions and their families. <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Our <strong>Instructional Tip of the Week<\/strong> is from Dyan&#8230;One of the eight components of features of SIOP is <strong>Building Background<\/strong>. One way to build background is to emphasize <em>key vocabulary<\/em>.&nbsp; The most effective vocabulary development is closely related to the content.&nbsp; <em>Vocabulary<\/em> should be presented in context, not isolation.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some techniques for\nemphasizing key vocabulary are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Contextualizing\nVocabulary: choose vocabulary\nwords that are important to understanding the lesson and present the\ndefinitions in context<\/li><li>Vocabulary\nSelf-Selection: students select\nvocabulary as individuals, in pairs, or in small groups. After learning the\nterms, students share their lists with the class<\/li><li>Personal\nDictionaries: created by\nstudents as an individual spelling and vocabulary resource<\/li><li>Word\nWalls: are effective for\ndisplaying content words related to content<\/li><li>Concept\nDefinition Maps: structured\nwebs that are used to explore more complex concepts. The center circle can be a\nbroad concept such as \u201chabitat\u201d and the spokes leading of the circle may be\norganized to respond to questions such as, \u201cWhat is it?\u201d, \u201cWhat are some\nexamples?\u201d and \u201cWhy is it important?\u201d<\/li><li>Word\nSorts: used to categorize words\nor phrase that have been previously introduced <\/li><li>Word\nStudy Books: student-made\npersonal books containing frequently used words and concepts.
