The first scheduled district SIW is set for October 2. That is the week before we model the listening sessions at Leadership. You are welcome to use October 2 for your own school PD as long as you complete the listening sessions another Wednesday.

Dyslexia- October is Dyslexia Awareness Month. This is a good time remind everyone of SB 1003 and the requirements around it. Please make any corrections to the list-i.e. if someone has moved on from your school. If your trained staff person has moved to another school, please contact Julie Walker to arrange to have someone else trained. Please familiarize yourself with this process and be able to answer questions (see talking points) about our process to address this law, and more importantly, help students struggling to learn to read. Sean will be at our horizontal meeting on 9/23 to provide some more info for you.

Interpreters and Translations- Please see below from Jody McBride regarding interpreters and translation services. You may also refer to BLP’s Language Access Plan for more detailed information.

Our translators and interpreters are not here, or on call. They work for the HDESD and we contract with the HDESD for their services. Here are their most basic guidelines:
*Documents for translation take approximately 5-7 school days for turn around. It can be longer during busy times.
*Please send your documents as an attachment in an email, and in manipulative form (Word, Pages etc) if at all possible. PDF’s are difficult to translate and take longer. Please don’t convert a PDF to Word. It ends up corrupted for the translator.
*Remember to request your interpreter(s) on the portal 5-7 school days in advance unless it is an emergency issue such as medical, discipline, etc. The HDESD will always try to fill every request, but sometimes there isn’t anyone available last minute.
*Don’t forget to notify our office in advance if the appointment is cancelled or changed. We are charged for cancellations with less than 24 hours notice.

There is a lot of information in the access plan such as what types of documents should be translated, how to put in a requests and more. Anyone with questions can always contact Jody directly.

2 Hour Secretary- Title IV funds will be able to pay for 1 hour for each school. The additional hour will cost each school approximately $4200 (it will probably be a bit less than that as we aren’t starting at the beginning of the year). Please let me know if/when you want to move forward. I will then tell HR you are posting the position. Wendy Reeves will then need to know if you are going to pay out of discretionary or SIF. Call if you have any questions. HR wanted me to remind you that the aim of this extra time is for help in the health room, with the visitor management system, for assistance in the front office with phones and/or other office support. However, this person would not be trained in Synergy to enroll students or perform the higher level work of the secretary II or office manager in the building. If there are any questions, please do not hesitate to call us to brainstorm options. In addition, ODE now includes chronic absenteeism on its school report cards. LPE is working to improve chronic absenteeism and getting creative doing so. This has helped a lot with all of the new transportation needs. Thank you for doing this. She asked that I also pass along the following information.

Please make sure bus loops are clear of parent traffic, so buses can move thru efficiently

If possible, please have a staff member at the loading area to meet the bus by 7:30. We only have a couple of minutes to pull in drop and turn around to head on for MS/HS routes.

Please do NOT mark students tardy for late buses. We have not been calling schools about late buses, because it is still the majority that are running late (this is mostly a secondary issue as elementary buses are usually on time).

We are brainstorming for some fixes for transfer buses. Buses are scheduled to drop at schools at 8:30, then head to Option Schools. There are areas of town that make it nearly impossible to get to another school within 15 minutes, it is our goal- unfortunately we are not meeting this.

Principal for a Day- You may have received an invitation to participate in this again this year. You can call the usual folks if you need assistance.
