In June, Bend-La Pine Schools began testing the water supplies at all school and work sites for lead and copper to ensure safe water supplies. During the first round of testing, one water source was tested at each location.
This Fall, we began a second round of testing. We collected samples from all drinking fountains and food preparation sinks in buildings built prior to 1980 and sent them to a lab for processing. We received and reviewed these result on Wednesday. In all, of the 351 tests (fountains and food prep faucets), 349 were below the EPAs action level (20 parts per billion) and two were above.
One sample from a drinking fountain in an unused classroom at La Pine Middle School showed slightly elevated levels of lead, at 28 parts per billion. The second slightly elevated sample came from a classroom in use at Amity Creek at Thompson School in Bend at 31 parts per billion of lead in the water. The federal Environmental Protection Agency action level is 20 parts per billion. Though the District does not believe that there is a systemic issue with the water supplies at these two school sites, we are proceeding with an abundance of caution. By 1 p.m. Wednesday, these two schools were advised to stop use of all drinking fountains until further notice. Bottled water is being delivered to schools. Hand washing will continue to be available in restrooms. The District took second school wide water samples at these two school sites on Thursday morning to verify results. We are working closely with our testing facility to get test results back as quickly as possible. The lab results could take as long as two weeks to be returned to the District. We completed sample collection at all 1980 and newer schools and work-sites this week. These results are expected to be returned to the District in mid-November. I am sure we will follow the same protocol if we receive another elevated sample. Please don’t hesitate to give Julianne or me a call if you have any questions.

November Horizontal- This is a reminder that the November horizontal meeting will be optional. The main topic will be observations…minis, formals, pre and post conferences, forms, record keeping, organization, etc. I’ll let you know time, date, place in next week’s notes (this just means I don’t know those details yet). Wherever and whenever this takes place, it should be a great time to collaborate and learn from your peers about a topic that can be a powerful tool for student learning.

Math Notes- Here is some math information from Kerry Morton.

1. I know how emotionally draining conferences can be. Even though the vast majority go amazingly well, it takes an enormous amount of physical and emotional energy to plan for, prepare for and meet with so many parents in a meaningful way. Thanks to you and your teachers for all of the time, care and heart you put into the last couple of days. Hope your weekend was relaxing and rejuvenating.

Amity and La Pine Middle School Lead- As you are probably already aware, two schools have tested for elevated levels of led in their water.
