{"id":3814,"date":"2018-01-11T13:03:05","date_gmt":"2018-01-11T21:03:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.bend.k12.or.us\/instructionaltechnology\/?p=3814"},"modified":"2020-03-23T16:16:30","modified_gmt":"2020-03-24T00:16:30","slug":"siri-activation-on-all-ipads","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bend.k12.or.us\/instructionaltechnology\/2018\/01\/11\/siri-activation-on-all-ipads\/","title":{"rendered":"Siri Activation on All iPads"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">This year we received several requests to activate Siri on all student iPads so we decided to have the Advisory Committee weigh in on the decision.\u00a0 Representatives from each level at almost all schools discussed the pros and cons of activating Siri.\u00a0 Their recommendation was that it be turned on.\u00a0 Their thoughts were that there are some real benefits to Siri and having it on provides our students with another valuable and useful tool.\u00a0 Additionally, the voice dictation feature of the iPad relies on Siri and cannot be used without Siri being active.<\/p>\n<p>Here are some ways teachers are using Siri in the classroom (from http:\/\/www.simplek12.com\/ipads-mobile-learning\/6-ways-students-can-use-siri\/):<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><strong>Word definitions<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 Not only will Siri give you a definition of a word, but she\u2019ll provide you with the spelling of the word too. To try this out, say \u201cdefine conjunctivitis\u201d to Siri.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Help with visualization<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 Oftentimes, Siri will show you an\u00a0image along with other pertinent information. Try asking,\u00a0\u201cWhat is an isosceles triangle?\u201d, or \u201cWhat does a velociraptor look like?\u201d.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Dictation<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 Students can dictate into Siri,\u00a0and Siri will transform their spoken words into written type. This feature works in any app that allows you to type.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Translation<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 Siri can act as your virtual translator. Ask her, \u201cWhat is breakfast in French?\u201d, or \u201cHow do I say hello in Japanese?\u201d. This can help you make new foreign friends quickly.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Historical information<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 Ask Siri about dates in history such as, \u201cWhen was the Battle of Hastings?\u201d, or \u201cWhen did the Beatles break up?\u201d.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>These are just a few examples.
