{"id":102,"date":"2016-02-05T22:47:36","date_gmt":"2016-02-05T22:47:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.bend.k12.or.us\/jim.boen\/?p=102"},"modified":"2016-02-05T22:47:36","modified_gmt":"2016-02-05T22:47:36","slug":"2-5-16","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bend.k12.or.us\/jim.boen\/2016\/02\/05\/2-5-16\/","title":{"rendered":"2.5.16"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This and That:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>It is no surprise to anyone that we are at the midpoint of this academic school year. \u00a0What may be a bit of a shock is how quickly we&#8217;ve arrived at this place. \u00a0This is a point\u00a0when I will be\u00a0reflecting back on what my goals were for this year &#8211; and being honest about where I am in this journey. \u00a0What has been accomplished, what I&#8217;ve begun but not finished, and where I have fallen flat. \u00a0Whether individually or with a team you work with, I encourage you to take a few moments and reflect\u00a0on the first 20 weeks with students and see if you are where you want to be as you lead in\u00a0your school.<\/li>\n<li>Our district would love your feedback, specifically if you have concerns, regarding the following three questions. \u00a0If you could share any negative experiences about any of these please email me so I can collect and then pass them along in an effort to get better results in the future.\n<ul>\n<li>With our new &#8220;sub finder&#8221;, have you been unable to request a specific sub?<\/li>\n<li>Is there additional work or steps needed at the office manager level in order to do a work around to get a particular sub for the day?<\/li>\n<li>With our 1-to-1 iPad implementation, have your heard concerns from your teachers who have had a sub, or from a sub him\/herself, around\u00a0not being able to deliver instruction due to his\/her\u00a0lack of technology skills?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Although this is not a new article, I do believe it is a timely one. \u00a0&#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/hbr.org\/2012\/08\/the-disciplined-pursuit-of-less\/\" target=\"_blank\">The Disciplined Pursuit of Less<\/a>,&#8221; published in the Harvard Business Review, examines why &#8211; in the words of author Greg McKeown &#8211; &#8220;<em>successful<\/em> people and organizations don&#8217;t automatically become\u00a0<em>very<\/em> successful.&#8221; \u00a0McKeown makes a case that &#8220;<em>success is a catalyst for failure<\/em>.&#8221; \u00a0Consider that. \u00a0Success may actually contribute to failure. \u00a0Jim Collins states that some fall into failure because of the &#8220;undisciplined pursuit of more.&#8221; \u00a0In the end McKeown urges his readers to pursue &#8220;<em>the disciplined pursuit of less<\/em>. \u00a0Not just haphazardly saying no, but purposefully, deliberately, and strategically eliminating the nonessentials.&#8221; After reading this article, consider how this might apply to\u00a0your School Design Plan. \u00a0What might this mean for you as an instructional leader?
