{"id":217,"date":"2016-05-06T20:44:23","date_gmt":"2016-05-06T20:44:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.bend.k12.or.us\/jim.boen\/?p=217"},"modified":"2016-05-06T20:44:23","modified_gmt":"2016-05-06T20:44:23","slug":"5-6-16","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bend.k12.or.us\/jim.boen\/2016\/05\/06\/5-6-16\/","title":{"rendered":"5.6.16"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>This and That:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>I am happy to announce that we have determined four dates to be set aside as &#8220;District SIW&#8221; for next school year. \u00a0These dates should be the only ones in which core, SPED, or other certified (e.g. ELL) teachers will be pulled from your building. \u00a0Additionally, these will be the dates on which other departments could meet either vertically or horizontally (e.g. music, second language, etc.). \u00a0I&#8217;ve included content areas that have already made plans for PD on those days: \u00a09\/14 (ELA and math), 10\/5 (ELA and math), 1\/11 (math), 3\/8 (math). \u00a0I am fairly certain that science will also plan to meet on these dates as it is an instructional materials adoption year. \u00a0Additionally, counselors will likely be pulled these dates in order to create a district Comprehensive Guidance and Counseling Program next year.<\/li>\n<li>Grant Wiggins, maybe best known as co-author of the book\u00a0<em>Understanding by Design<\/em>, wrote an blog post entitled: &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/grantwiggins.wordpress.com\/2012\/03\/13\/everything-you-know-about-curriculum-may-be-wrong-really\/\" target=\"_blank\">Everything you know about curriculum may be wrong. \u00a0Really.<\/a>&#8221; \u00a0Wiggins asks the question: &#8220;&#8230; what results if we think of action, not knowledge, as the essence of an education&#8230;&#8221; Here is another excerpt from that post that may wet your appetite enough for you to read it in its entirety:&#8221;So, suppose knowledge is not the goal of education. Rather, suppose today\u2019s content knowledge is an <em>offshoot<\/em> of successful <em>ongoing<\/em> learning in a changing world \u2013 in which \u2018learning\u2019 means \u2018learning to perform in the world.\u2019As odd as that might sound for academics, it makes perfect sense in our everyday lives.
