{"id":32,"date":"2015-11-25T06:01:33","date_gmt":"2015-11-25T06:01:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.bend.k12.or.us\/jim.boen\/?p=32"},"modified":"2015-12-01T16:44:30","modified_gmt":"2015-12-01T16:44:30","slug":"11-13-15","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bend.k12.or.us\/jim.boen\/2015\/11\/25\/11-13-15\/","title":{"rendered":"11-13-15"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>For many of you I hope these days of conferences are ones where connections are made between family and school, as well as between students and learning. \u00a0For all of you, know that I appreciate the dedication and heart for children that you bring to work every day. \u00a0Your jobs are not easy and the impact you are making not always visible now\u2026 but you are making a difference. \u00a0I think you for that.<\/p>\n<p>I am sending this email today as I will be attending the OSBA conference tomorrow and Saturday in Portland. \u00a0If you need anything please don\u2019t hesitate to contact me by cell (if you need me right away) or email (if you would like me to respond later this weekend).<\/p>\n<p>Jim<\/p>\n<p>This and That:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>I\u00a0liked the mental image of this quote and thought it was worth sharing: &#8220;On the difference between formative and summative assessments, Hattie quotes Bob Stake of the University of Illinois: &#8216;When the cook tastes the soup, it is formative; when the guests taste the soup, it is summative.&#8217;\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&#8220;The Effective Use of Testing: What the Research Says\u201d by John Hattie in <em>Education Week<\/em>, October 28, 2015 (Vol. 35, #10, p. 28, 23), <a href=\"http:\/\/www.edweek.org\/\">www.edweek.org<\/a><br \/>\nEndFragmentEndFragment<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u00a0Here is\u00a0the <a href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/a\/gapps.bend.k12.or.us\/file\/d\/0BwH82Aoi_UKTQjQteWdGTzBhMHM\/view?usp=sharing\" target=\"_blank\">agenda<\/a> for our Horizontal meeting Monday afternoon at Pacific Crest. \u00a0A couple of things to know\/think about prior to our meeting:\n<ul>\n<li>A recurring item that we will start with each Horizontal is \u201cBright Spots.\u201d \u00a0Nothing for you to prepare, but I\u2019d like to spend a few minutes allowing you to quickly share something that you are proud of that is happening in your building. \u00a0It could be three words or three sentences. \u00a0When I think of \u201cBright Spots\u201d I think of a positive that stands out in the midst of the chaos, the frantic pace of our work, or when all else wasn\u2019t working\u2026 this thing did.<\/li>\n<li>We\u2019ll be talking about \u201c8th Grade Celebration Expectations.\u201d \u00a0Please be ready to share out what the expectations are for 8th graders at your building.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Your Feedback Requested:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Similar to last year, OSU-Cascades is hoping to provide their teacher candidates with an opportunity to meet and mock interview with BLS administrators on President\u2019s Day (Monday, Feb. 15, 2016). \u00a0This is a great opportunity to have a first hand look at potential candidates if you know of an impeding opening at your building. \u00a0Of course, this will only work if we provided enough administrators to make this possible. \u00a0Therefore,\u00a0I\u00a0need a rough number of folks who would be willing to spend a good chunk of a day (I\u00a0believe it was all morning\u00a0\u2013\u00a0through lunch last year) for this effort. \u00a0Please let me know if you\u00a0would\u00a0be willing to work with teacher candidates on Feb. 15. \u00a0If\u00a0I\u00a0don\u2019t hear from you then\u00a0I\u00a0will assume you will not be available.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Spring conferences (for Bend middle schools) are scheduled on April 14 (12\u00a0\u20138 pm) &amp; 15 (8\u00a0\u2013\u00a012pm) according to our district calendar. \u00a0I have heard from some of you regarding changing these conference days so there is not a requirement for staff to come in at all on\u00a0Friday. \u00a0If you are interested in this scenario playing out in your building,\u00a0I ask that you speak with your staff about this as an alternative schedule instead: April 13 (4\u00a0\u2013\u00a08pm), April 14 (12\u00a0\u2013\u00a08pm) and no staff report on\u00a0Friday. \u00a0In this situation the morning of April 14 would be their\u00a0contracted 1\/2 day grading workday. \u00a0If your staff is in agreement, you may use this schedule instead. \u00a0Please do not make other modifications to days or times outside of these. \u00a0Andrea will change the district calendar posted on our website to reflect this change, but this does not mean you must change if your staff prefers to keep the original schedule. \u00a0\u00a0Let me know if you plan on using this modified (not working on\u00a0Friday) schedule. \u00a0Give me a call if you have any questions or need clarification regarding this.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>New Information:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>I have been made aware of a resource for schools\/teachers called\u00a0\u201cExpeditions Pioneer Program\u201d that\u00a0I want to pass along. \u00a0The website (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/edu\/expeditions\/\">https:\/\/www.google.com\/edu\/expeditions\/<\/a>) offers the details you need to find out further information about this free \u201cvirtual reality platform made for the classroom.\u201d \u00a0Check out the webpage and see if you think one or more of your teachers would like to apply for a chance at an expedition coming to your school!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>For many of you I hope these days of conferences are ones where connections are made between family and school, as well as between students and learning. \u00a0For all of you, know that I appreciate the dedication and heart for &hellip;
