{"id":346,"date":"2016-10-07T16:11:41","date_gmt":"2016-10-07T16:11:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.bend.k12.or.us\/jim.boen\/?p=346"},"modified":"2016-10-07T16:11:41","modified_gmt":"2016-10-07T16:11:41","slug":"10-7-16","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bend.k12.or.us\/jim.boen\/2016\/10\/07\/10-7-16\/","title":{"rendered":"10.7.16"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>To Do:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>If you haven&#8217;t already (and if\u00a0needed), please email Jody McBride when you will be needing translation services at your building during conferences. \u00a0As mentioned earlier, your request should be received at least\u00a0two weeks in advance, which is <em>next Wednesday<\/em> (if you can believe it!).<\/li>\n<li>Let me know if you are conferencing on Friday, Oct. 28. \u00a0My assumption is that your staff&#8217;s have all elected to conference\u00a0on\u00a0Wed, 26th and Thurs, 27th &#8211; but if you are instead conferencing on Thursday and Friday please let me know.<\/li>\n<li>Early next week you will be sent a link for completing a short survey (10 questions or less) regarding this past Monday&#8217;s Leadership time. \u00a0Jay, Gary and I are interested in your feedback in order to make our time together as valuable as possible. \u00a0We value your thinking\u00a0and thank you in advance for your input!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>This and That:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>As you likely are aware, <strong>Talent Ed<\/strong> is up and running! This year, to help ease your\u00a0set-up burden, you only need to select one of two processes for your staff &#8211; those that will have a summative eval this year and those that will not. The <strong>SLGG form<\/strong>\u00a0is a part of both of these two processes and you can have your staff begin completing this at any time. \u00a0Remember, Category I goals (SBAC) are no longer required and should not be used. The target date to have SLGGs completed is the end of October, but I understand if all are not completed until the middle of November due to the delay in making Talent Ed available to you. Let me know if you have any questions regarding this.<\/li>\n<li>I hope you take the 6:30 needed to watch this video called the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=YtI0wSh4Kes\"> Oak Park Positivity Project<\/a>. \u00a0Following is a blurb from <a href=\"https:\/\/gma.yahoo.com\/teachers-tell-individual-students-special-tears-ensue-190549336--abc-news-topstories.html?cid=abcn_fb#\">ABC Good Morning America<\/a> regarding this video:\u00a0<em>Jamie McSparin, a teacher in charge of the school\u2019s academy program for at-risk sophomore and juniors, posed a challenge for her fellow teachers: tell an individual student that they are important and appreciated. We\u2019d look up their schedule and pull the kids from class for 30 seconds and the kids were all like, \u2018Oh my gosh, did I not turn something in?\u2019 and we\u2019re like, \u2018No, no, just stand there.\u2019 Any teacher\/student interaction always seems to be negative, and that was something that bothered me, too. No matter if they\u2019re a good kid or a trouble maker or anything, they always thought they were in trouble, she explained. Some teachers would come up to me two or three days later and say, \u2018I\u2019m having a bad day. Let\u2019s do another video.&#8217; \u00a0<\/em>I challenge you to not only view this video, but to also think about how\u00a0your &#8220;Positivity Project&#8221; might\u00a0look at your school &#8211; and of course video your project\u00a0to share with others!<\/li>\n<li>Shay has expressed an interest in joining me during some of my future visits with you at your building. \u00a0I have passed along a number of dates and times and anticipate that you may <strong>see both Shay and I<\/strong>\u00a0in the coming months. \u00a0Just wanted to give you a heads-up and allow you time to have fresh baked goods ready for each of my visits &#8211; as we can never be sure which Shay will join us at, right?! \ud83d\ude42<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">[A good reminder from Julianne this week] With Halloween right around the corner and \u2018clown sightings\u2019 on the rise in the West &#8211; including CMS this week, I thought it would be a good time to remind you that we have policy in place that prohibits wearing clothing that is disruptive to the learning environment, that prevents identification (hoods, masks, etc.) or poses a threat to the well-being and safety of students or others. Feel free to report any suspicious persons\/situations to law enforcement if warranted.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Details at:\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s2\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bend.k12.or.us\/application\/files\/8714\/5280\/2180\/JFCA-AR.pdf\">https:\/\/www.bend.k12.or.us\/application\/files\/8714\/5280\/2180\/JFCA-AR.pdf<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>I was able to attend a couple of district-wide PD opportunities recently and want to pass along how impressed I was with your counselors and math teachers\u00a0in attendance. \u00a0These folks were engaged, enthusiastic, passionate about their craft, and seemed to truly love working and problem-solving with their peers across our district. \u00a0It was a pleasure to see the zeal they bring to their profession.
