{"id":356,"date":"2016-11-10T21:06:18","date_gmt":"2016-11-10T21:06:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.bend.k12.or.us\/jim.boen\/?p=356"},"modified":"2016-11-10T21:06:18","modified_gmt":"2016-11-10T21:06:18","slug":"11-11-16","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bend.k12.or.us\/jim.boen\/2016\/11\/10\/11-11-16\/","title":{"rendered":"11.11.16"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>To Do:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Add to your calendar<\/strong>: On December 5 we have a Leadership meeting that begins at 3:15. \u00a0The planned agenda is to talk about a possible district bond and then walk across the street for our holiday social. \u00a0I&#8217;d like for all MS building administrators to come to the board room at <strong>2:30 on Dec. 5<\/strong> for a informational\u00a0meeting with Josh Marks and Colleen Funderburg regarding a draft system for processing discipline\/expulsion students between home school and alternative options. \u00a0Josh will present the draft system flowchart and ask for your feedback on how to improve it. Please plan on having at least one administrator from each building attend &#8211; but\u00a0all admin would even be better!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>This and That:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>No matter where your vote landed, we now know who will be our 45th President. \u00a0To be honest, I am not very politically motivated &#8211; but the path leading up to this\u00a0election caught my attention. \u00a0Unfortunately, what drew me in was the ugliness within the process leading up to the Nov. 8th vote. \u00a0Although the candidates have since communicated a collaborative voice, not all in our country have &#8211; which again is very disappointing. \u00a0It is truly time to pull together no matter what our political views are and it is up to us, as leaders and fellow workers in our district, to model this stance. \u00a0I am proud to know you and work with you in great degree because I know your heart. \u00a0<strong>You love working with\u00a0kids and are passionate about their ability to learn<\/strong>;\u00a0preparing each for her\/his future. \u00a0I know that you care and will advocate for every student at your school &#8211; regardless of race, gender, sex, socio-economic status, or any other subgroup title that can be thought of. \u00a0If there is tension in your building I encourage you to address it head-on and clearly communicate what your expectations are around how all people will be treated at school. \u00a0Thank you for what you do day in and day out as a building leader! [I wrote this prior to Shay sending out a &#8220;message to staff&#8221; email earlier today. \u00a0I appreciate his words and echo his communication around what many of you and your staff members are experiencing right now.]<\/li>\n<li>I know some of you may have already had a meeting\u00a0with your MS Horizontal &#8220;sister school&#8221; and begun conversations around <strong>progress monitoring<\/strong> &#8211; and that is great. \u00a0Whether you have had a first meeting yet or not, I committed to providing you with some resources and items to consider around this topic. \u00a0And thankfully, because of Lora&#8217;s work, you are now receiving those resources! \u00a0I&#8217;ve loaded all of the documents in Google Drive for you to access (Instruction\/PD tab &#8211; then Progress Monitoring folder), but want to specifically link to one\u00a0document (<a href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/a\/gapps.bend.k12.or.us\/file\/d\/0BwH82Aoi_UKTRUtOZ1FSN1p2MzQ\/view?usp=sharing\">How do we Know if we are Growing<\/a>) I recommend you start with. \u00a0It is a combination of things to consider and recommended action steps for ultimately creating progress monitoring assessments. \u00a0Additionally, there are a number of excellent readings that will be a good resource for you to review and potentially discuss.<\/li>\n<li>Next Friday and Saturday I&#8217;ll be in Portland for a <strong>TURN Conference<\/strong>. \u00a0This is one in which we&#8217;ll have district, classified, building, and certified leadership attending in order to\u00a0continue our efforts around working\u00a0collaboratively on issues\u00a0that benefit the district as a whole. \u00a0I&#8217;ll be leaving Thursday afternoon, but please call or text my cell phone if you need me for any reason that evening\u00a0or\u00a0Friday.<\/li>\n<li>You have probably all watched a &#8220;<strong>Kid President<\/strong>&#8221; video before, but maybe you haven&#8217;t watched one recently! \u00a0They are all pretty good, but here is one he did honoring teachers and students that I thought was worth another look.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Kid President&#039;s Pep Talk to Teachers and Students!\" width=\"584\" height=\"329\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/RwlhUcSGqgs?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Thank you to all who were able to attend the <strong>admin technology training<\/strong> on Monday afternoon at PCMS. \u00a0I trust you were both encouraged to think about the <em>current<\/em> use of technology for instruction &#8211; as well as challenged to think of\u00a0ways in which you might lead in how technology <em>could<\/em> be used in teaching\/learning. \u00a0If you weren&#8217;t able to attend this training I encourage you to consider if someone from your building could participate in the future.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Reminders:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Next Tuesday, 11\/15,\u00a0is a\u00a0<strong>MAC Survey<\/strong> day. \u00a0You are aware that this is a major funding source for our FAN advocates, so please take the\u00a0time to review which of your, if any, activities are considered &#8220;claimable&#8221; time.<\/li>\n<li>Next Tuesday is also\u00a0<strong>Principal for the Day<\/strong>, sponsored by the Education Foundation. \u00a0Not all of our schools will participate this year &#8211; but all of our middle schools are!\u00a0 By now you\u00a0should be aware of whom is coming to your building as &#8220;principal.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>Next Thursday is <strong>College Day<\/strong> in all of our schools across the district. \u00a0Encourage your staff to wear college gear and make sure you take a photo to send to Andrea and Alandra.<\/li>\n<li>Don&#8217;t forget to <strong>complete your SLGGs<\/strong> in Talent Ed by next Friday, Nov. 18. \u00a0Let me know if you have any questions about the process or specifics around goals. \u00a0More than anything, please make your goals meaningful to you and student learning.<\/li>\n<li>Per his email sent out on 11\/8, Skip has opened up the\u00a0<strong>BrightBytes survey<\/strong> and it will remain open through Dec. 2. <a href=\"https:\/\/clarity.brightbytes.net\/users\/sign_in\">Here is the link for logging in<\/a>.
