{"id":442,"date":"2017-02-24T20:48:34","date_gmt":"2017-02-24T20:48:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.bend.k12.or.us\/jim.boen\/?p=442"},"modified":"2017-02-24T20:48:34","modified_gmt":"2017-02-24T20:48:34","slug":"2-24-17","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bend.k12.or.us\/jim.boen\/2017\/02\/24\/2-24-17\/","title":{"rendered":"2.24.17"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>This and That:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p class=\"p1\">News from Austin James: Beginning the\u00a0fall of 2017, we plan to enable a new Synergy feature that will automatically calculate the FTE for each student.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><em><span class=\"s1\">Why are we making this change?<\/span><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Reporting accurate FTE values is essential because our funding is dependent on student FTE.\u00a0\u00a0 Calculating student FTE is difficult.\u00a0 Since the 2013-14 school year, we have asked office staff to manage FTE changes manually.\u00a0 Enabling this new feature will relieve this burden.\u00a0 Additionally, allowing Synergy to calculate student FTE values allows calculations to be more consistent, which will reduce errors and allow for easier identification of possible issues.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><em><span class=\"s1\">How does this new feature work?<\/span><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Synergy will take the school calendar, meeting days, bell schedules, and the student schedule into account when making this calculation.\u00a0 For more information, please contact Austin James.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><em><span class=\"s1\">How will this change affect staff at my school?<\/span><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Since Synergy will be calculating student FTE, registrars, counselors, and counseling support staff will no longer need to manage FTE changes.\u00a0 These staff will need to continue to record student enrollments and class schedule changes accurately in Synergy.\u00a0 Schedulers will need to be accurate when entering data while setting up the master schedule for the next year.\u00a0 Additionally, keeping school calendars and bell schedules up to date will be vital.\u00a0 The Information Technology department will continue to provide assistance in accurately inputting school schedules, bell schedules, and emergency closure days.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><em><span class=\"s1\">When will training be available for my staff?<\/span><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Middle and high school schedules can be complex.\u00a0 We would like the opportunity to sit down with MS and HS office staff to help them become comfortable with these upcoming changes.\u00a0 We would also like to listen to their concerns so that we can work together to build a workable implementation plan for each school.\u00a0 Rachel Mavis will reach out in the near future to begin these conversations. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">If you have any questions, please don&#8217;t hesitate to ask Austin.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>As you likely have heard by now, educational expert Rick DuFour passed away on Feb. 8 after a long battle with lung cancer. \u00a0In a recent Marshall Memo (673) some of Rick&#8217;s thoughts on a variety of topics were highlighted by Kim &#8211; who has featured no less than\u00a031 articles over the years on Rick&#8217;s thoughts on education. \u00a0Here are a few of Rick&#8217;s quotes related to teaching, as noted in previous Marshall Memos:\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cIf those within the school believe that the causes of student learning lie outside their spheres of influence \u2013 in the genes or social background of their students \u2013 school improvement efforts will be viewed as futile, if not ridiculous.\u201d \u00a0(with Timothy Berkey, in Memo 146)<\/li>\n<li>\u201cRegardless of how \u2018good\u2019 a faculty may consider its school, for the parent whose child does not learn, the school has failed the child \u2013 100 percent.\u201d\u00a0 (Memo 318)<\/li>\n<li>\u201c[T]here\u2019s no such thing as a universally effective teaching strategy; the effectiveness of any given strategy can only be determined by evidence of its effect on student learning.\u201d \u00a0(with Mike Mattos, in Memo 480)<\/li>\n<li>\u201cTeaching is the profession that creates all other professions.\u201d\u00a0 (Memo 636)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Reminders:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>No MS Horizontal meeting on Monday, Feb. 27.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This and That: News from Austin James: Beginning the\u00a0fall of 2017, we plan to enable a new Synergy feature that will automatically calculate the FTE for each student.
