{"id":732,"date":"2017-09-22T21:07:11","date_gmt":"2017-09-22T21:07:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.bend.k12.or.us\/jim.boen\/?p=732"},"modified":"2017-09-22T23:17:40","modified_gmt":"2017-09-22T23:17:40","slug":"9-22-17","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bend.k12.or.us\/jim.boen\/2017\/09\/22\/9-22-17\/","title":{"rendered":"9.22.17"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>To Do:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>If you have a &#8220;next fall check list&#8221; of things to <strong>consider at the start of school<\/strong>, these two suggestions may be worth considering for implementation or modification to fit your situation.\u00a0 They both come from Rachel Mavis, who spent a large part of the student&#8217;s first day at CMS due to a new attendance secretary hired there.\u00a0 Here are her thoughts from that experience:\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">1.\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 When the students get their iPads (before school starts), have a session, hand out or quick video on the iPad showing them how to log into StudenVUE to see their Schedule and locker. This will cut down on paper and students standing in line the first day of school.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">2.<\/span><span class=\"s2\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><span class=\"s1\">Instead of Parent\u2019s filling out a form on medical information, encourage parents to create a ParentVUE account \u2013 log into PVU and make the changes there.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>This and That:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Jon and Debbie will be joining us to talk about a few HR-related topics at our next Horizontal meeting.\u00a0 In the meantime, please <strong>hold off on collecting SLGGs<\/strong> for this year. This could be a topic at our next Horizontal, or you may receive an email from Jon prior to then to inform you of some changes allowed by the state and how we will be working with our teachers around goals for this year.\u00a0 But again, please do not communicate about or collect any SLGGs until you hear more from Jon.<\/li>\n<li>I pulled our MS data off of the recently released <strong>SBAC scores from 2016-17<\/strong> and JoAnne helped me by putting it all on <a href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/a\/gapps.bend.k12.or.us\/file\/d\/0BwH82Aoi_UKTTU9BR2pWR2V4ak0\/view?usp=sharing\">this one page<\/a>. This is one snapshot of how your school performed, and I probably don&#8217;t need to tell you that it likely is not a very good reflection of your academic achievements. Across the bottom of the page are the schools listed (left to right) based on Free &amp; Reduced rate. If you&#8217;d like to view it without printing then I&#8217;d recommend you download it (button on top right, next to the printer).\u00a0 If you open this downloaded version then you will be able to rotate it (by clicking on a button also on the top right of your screen).\u00a0 The rest should be self explanatory, but feel free to ask if you have any questions.<\/li>\n<li>Dr. VanLoo recently shared an article with me that I thought is definitely worth passing along to you.\u00a0 It comes out of the Sept. 15, 2017 edition of\u00a0<em>Education Week<\/em>.\u00a0 Entitled &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.edweek.org\/edweek\/inside-school-research\/2017\/06\/writing_affirmation_boosts_college_black_latino.html\">How a Simple Writing Exercise for Middle School Led to Higher College Enrollment<\/a>&#8221; and talks about the affects this practice has had with Latino and Black students.\u00a0 Although not addressed in this article, I also wonder what effect this practice would have on attitudes and behaviors of low socio-economic middle school students.\u00a0 Here is a short blurb from this article to wet your appetite to read the entire (short) article: &#8220;The intervention is one of a growing set of so-called\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.edweek.org\/edweek\/inside-school-research\/2017\/06\/for_education_interventions_a_.html\">&#8220;nudges,&#8221; low-cost, short-term\u00a0interventions<\/a>\u00a0that prod students to make positive changes in their attitude or behavior.
