{"id":779,"date":"2018-01-26T21:27:06","date_gmt":"2018-01-26T21:27:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.bend.k12.or.us\/jim.boen\/?p=779"},"modified":"2018-01-26T21:27:06","modified_gmt":"2018-01-26T21:27:06","slug":"1-26-18","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bend.k12.or.us\/jim.boen\/2018\/01\/26\/1-26-18\/","title":{"rendered":"1.26.18"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>TO DO:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Change of date<\/span>!\u00a0 In announcing the dates next fall for <strong>Take It Up training<\/strong> I provided you the an incorrect date.\u00a0 The REAL dates are: <strong>August 13 &amp; 14, 2018<\/strong>.\u00a0 Sorry for any confusion.<\/li>\n<li>You should have all received an email from me either today or yesterday regarding the <strong>Oregon Student Wellness Survey<\/strong>.\u00a0 This is the one we agreed to participate in every other year.\u00a0 The window for administration is Feb. 1 &#8211; April 6, but you need to allow parents the opportunity to opt out their (grade 6 or 8) child prior to providing this survey.\u00a0 You should have all the information you need in the email I passed along to you, but feel free to ask questions if you have any!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>THIS AND THAT:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Teri did a wonderful job of representing MS at this month&#8217;s <strong>district safety meeting<\/strong>.\u00a0 She brought up the question\/concern around communication with schools who are not in the midst of an event (that warrants staff, student and\/or parent communication), but is still connected (e.g. feeder school) and seems like should know more details of what is occurring.\u00a0 This will be a topic of further conversation that Teri or I will keep you posted on.\u00a0 Three other items also came up at this meeting that Teri asked me to pass along:\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Raptor<\/strong> (visitor management system) is operation in all of our elementary schools and a couple of our middle schools now.\u00a0 The plan is that beginning next fall this system will be up and running in all of our schools K-12.\u00a0 If you would like to move towards implementation prior to September please contact Scott Bojanowski regarding this.<\/li>\n<li>It is likely that you have a <strong>building team\/committee<\/strong> that meets periodically to discuss <strong>safety issues<\/strong>\/concerns.\u00a0 What may not be occurring as often is that there are minutes created and saved from these meetings.\u00a0 This bullet is to notify you that meeting minutes from these discussions may be asked to be saved in a Google Doc in the coming month(s).\u00a0 Nothing to do now, just a heads-up&#8230; unless of course you&#8217;ve never met with a team of folks in your building regarding safety &#8211; then you should start doing that!<\/li>\n<li>And another reminder&#8230; If you or any of your staff (new to the district since March, 2017) should have attended a <strong>Standard Response Protocol (SRP) Training<\/strong>.\u00a0 Contact Scott Bojanowski if you or another staff member needs this training so you can learn when the next offering will be.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>This is the time of year when it takes a conscious effort to stay (persistently) positive and upbeat. \u00a0It is likely also the time when your students, staff and parents need this modeled to them the most. \u00a0Following is a short article I read out of Marshall Memo earlier this fall that I thought was worth passing along to you now:\u00a0<strong>What Leaders Can Say to Spark Effort and Courage \u00a0<\/strong>\u201cSkillful leaders use encouraging language every day,\u201d says Dan Rothwell in this <em>Leadership Freak<\/em> article. Here are his suggestions for opening lines to spark effective effort in others, each followed by specific actions:\n<ul>\n<li>I appreciate\u2026<\/li>\n<li>I notice\u2026<\/li>\n<li>You\u2019re great at\u2026<\/li>\n<li>Thank you for\u2026<\/li>\n<li>I\u2019m impressed with..<\/li>\n<li>You help us get where we want to go when you\u2026<\/li>\n<li>You\u2019re making progress on\u2026<\/li>\n<li>You encourage others when\u2026<\/li>\n<li>Great effort when you\u2026<\/li>\n<li>Congratulations on\u2026<\/li>\n<li>You\u2019re making a difference for\u2026<\/li>\n<li>I\u2019m encouraged when you\u2026<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>And here are Rothwell\u2019s suggestions for inspiring courage:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Let\u2019s give it a try.<\/li>\n<li>What\u2019s the next imperfect step you could take?<\/li>\n<li>What would you like to try?<\/li>\n<li>What are you learning?<\/li>\n<li>If you weren\u2019t nervous, what would you do next?<\/li>\n<li>I\u2019ve seen you rise to challenges in the past.<\/li>\n<li>You\u2019re on the right track.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201c12 Sentence Starters That Inspire Courage\u201d by Dan Rothwell in <em>Leadership Freak<\/em>, August 7, 2017, <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2b30btd\">http:\/\/bit.ly\/2b30btd<\/a><\/li>\n<li>And speaking of being aware of our words, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Yl9TVbAal5s\">here is a 10 minute animated video with Carol Dweck<\/a> talking in the background regarding research data around <strong>fixed and growth mindsets<\/strong> &#8211; and how our words can help or hinder student success.\u00a0 When watching this video it reminded me of not only the child in the classroom learning, but also the one sitting in your office due to misbehavior and how this might be applied (and how you might respond) to a child in this situation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>REMINDERS:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>This is likely a reminder, but could also be new info for you&#8230; This year&#8217;s <strong>Central Oregon PBIS conference<\/strong> will be held on Monday, April 23 at the Riverhouse.\u00a0 The keynote is none other than <em>Dr. Anita Archer<\/em> and my guess is that she will draw a crowd.
