{"id":100,"date":"2018-10-05T19:06:45","date_gmt":"2018-10-05T19:06:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.bend.k12.or.us\/katie.legace\/?p=100"},"modified":"2018-10-05T19:06:45","modified_gmt":"2018-10-05T19:06:45","slug":"october-5-2018","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bend.k12.or.us\/katie.legace\/2018\/10\/05\/october-5-2018\/","title":{"rendered":"October 5, 2018"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Happy Friday, HS Rock Stars!<\/p>\n<p>I appreciate the <strong>reflective manner<\/strong> in which each of you is approaching your work and your relentless focus on continuous improvement.\u00a0 As we continue to focus on insuring\u00a0<strong>Equitable practices and thinking in each of our schools<\/strong>, I am sharing this short article on <a href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/file\/d\/1hQP8oZqBbEsG1NcHobeo6HGKeOtWssZm\/view?usp=sharing\">Implicit Bias<\/a> from the September Marshall Memo, which speaks to the way our unintended bias&#8217; can impact our work with students.<\/p>\n<p><strong>TO DO:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Please\u00a0<strong>announce to your staff<\/strong> that start time changes will go into effect Fall of 2019 <strong>prior to the Board Meeting Tuesday, October 9.<\/strong>\u00a0 We want staff to hear this news first hand from us.\u00a0 Here is the <a href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/file\/d\/1gZfFameWlEeJbIBKubMsRLx33VYIPeOX\/view?usp=sharing\">Executive Summary<\/a> that explains the decision.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Informational:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The <strong>Fall Town Hall Symposium on Racism<\/strong> is scheduled for <strong>Oct 11 from 9:30-2:30 at COCC<\/strong>.\u00a0 Ask your staff and student reps how <strong>you can support<\/strong> this important conversation focused on how we can ensure EVERY students feels safe and supported in school!<\/li>\n<li>At the Leadership Meeting on Monday, Jim explained the District\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/file\/d\/1TvC7rhXuOdXC7rMUX-2KHxfAgWPph-oM\/view?usp=sharing\">Discipline Philosophy\u00a0<\/a>and shared the updated\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/file\/d\/1QSc3Vm7NnQU6bbh5S6AVpKS8VkKU3iFC\/view?usp=sharing\">Discipline Matrix<\/a>\u00a0which provides guidelines for building administrators to follow when addressing student behavior.\u00a0 This matrix provides us with flexibility to <strong>consider individual student stories with an eye on changing behaviors<\/strong>, which is in line with our philosophy.<\/li>\n<li>Josh Marks led a presentation at the <em>New Administrator Training<\/em> this Monday on <em>Sped and Discipline.\u00a0 <\/em>He\u00a0provided these helpful docs, the <a href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/file\/d\/1bPOIHpG_EALhISgS61vWLVR_YY_CKrU9\/view?usp=sharing\">Discipline Flowchart<\/a>\u00a0and the <a href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/file\/d\/1MLw8RUf_l8YoawBCiNey9nVw3bwYd8SA\/view?usp=sharing\">Discipline Procedures<\/a> chart to clarify steps to follow you have a student on an IEP with a behavior concern.<\/li>\n<li>As Shay shared this week, <strong>INNOVATION<\/strong> is a key tenet of our work with students.\u00a0 This is evident in the <strong>multiple pathways to graduation<\/strong> we currently offer our families.\u00a0 Here is a compilation of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/file\/d\/16hNJstN14Jf4hoxNdPs8_CPxASiDiiRA\/view?usp=sharing\">BLPS Alternative Learning Options.<\/a>\u00a0 \u00a0Our students benefit from\u00a0<em>unique learning programs and Choice Schools, <\/em>in addition to <em>high quality comprehensive, traditional high schools.<\/em>\u00a0 Let&#8217;s continue to consider ways\u00a0<strong>within<\/strong> our larger high schools to support students in non-traditional ways and allow us to &#8220;customize&#8221; plans for students based on their needs.\u00a0 Current examples of this include our &#8220;<strong>in school,&#8221; supervised\u00a0online offering<\/strong>, our <strong>behavior programs<\/strong> designed to serve students with challenging behaviors,\u00a0and<strong> course offerings that partner core classes, such as LA, with CTE programs<\/strong>.\u00a0 I encourage building leaders to <strong>look for opportunities<\/strong> to design &#8220;school&#8221; in a variety of ways for students.\u00a0 Linda Adams from the HDESD recently shared an opportunity through ODE called the <a href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/file\/d\/1Ptpbl-YvQH98bd0NBpJnzTR1Apuhfip1\/view?usp=sharing\">Oregon Math Project<\/a> focused on <em>integrating math and construction<\/em>.\u00a0 This pilot is due to being in <strong>Fall of 2019<\/strong> and may be an option for buildings that offer a CTE program in construction.<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">Dave Van Loo recently shared and recommended these <strong>cut scores<\/strong> for our <a href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/file\/d\/1Jx_rXFKZmQs7gsxMNhhj_arpSmodZYlf\/view?usp=sharing\">ACT Aspire Interim Assessments<\/a> that <strong>meet Essential Skills<\/strong>:\u00a0 <em>162 for Math and 160 for reading.\u00a0\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>A note from Julianne<\/strong>:\u00a0 We want all staff to use the district approved badges, not customized badges.\u00a0 Staff can get a new badge, in the HR department.<\/li>\n<li>Here are the updated<a href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/file\/d\/10UVARTsYPdtJcZfCRPnUYr078PsW8X4G\/view?usp=sharing\"> sub guidelines<\/a>\u00a0from HR.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Calendar:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>One on One meetings with Principals &#8211;
