{"id":143,"date":"2018-10-26T23:25:47","date_gmt":"2018-10-26T23:25:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.bend.k12.or.us\/katie.legace\/?p=143"},"modified":"2018-10-26T23:25:47","modified_gmt":"2018-10-26T23:25:47","slug":"october-26-2018","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bend.k12.or.us\/katie.legace\/2018\/10\/26\/october-26-2018\/","title":{"rendered":"October 26, 2018"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Thank you for another outstanding week, Building Leaders:<\/p>\n<p>I had the opportunity to attend the <strong>iNACOL conference<\/strong> this week.\u00a0 The focus for the conference was <strong>innovation in high schools<\/strong> and here are several &#8220;takeaways&#8221; happening around our great nation:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Many communities are saturated by Charter Schools because traditional schools are choosing not to innovate.\u00a0 <em>I believe our district is &#8220;ahead of the curve&#8221; in this regard as our parents\/students can choose between many pathways towards graduation.\u00a0<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Districts are working on creative ways to differentiate PD for teachers and develop unique pathways for teacher leadership in PD.<\/li>\n<li>Competency based grading is becoming the norm in many parts of our nation.<\/li>\n<li>There is an organization called <strong>The Mastery Transcript Consortium<\/strong> that has been working on a new transcript with high schools and colleges\/universities.\u00a0 U of O is one of the universities involved in this work.\u00a0 Here is the latest <a href=\"https:\/\/rebrand.ly\/mtc-inacol\">prototype.\u00a0<\/a><\/li>\n<li>I appreciated this quote from one of the keynote speakers:\u00a0 \u201cDemography does not equal destiny.\u201d\u00a0 Carlos Moreno, CEO, Big Picture Learning<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>To Do:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>*Principals, I am proposing to<strong> align the ACR and Choice Schools<\/strong> processes so we complete both prior to forecasting beginning in March.\u00a0 For this to happen, we would need to <strong>schedule all of our 8th grade orientation nights in January.<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0 Yes, we will continue to schedule each of the Bend area HS orientations on <strong>separate nights<\/strong> and that includes Marshall, Skyline and REALMS.\u00a0\u00a0 I am presenting the proposal to cabinet on Monday afternoon.\u00a0 Here is the <a href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/file\/d\/1EW5gjESByN9ZiFWvd8yedZllD5BsGSTN\/view?usp=sharing\">proposal<\/a>, if you would like to weigh in.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Information<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<p>*At the high school level, we have been &#8220;flexible&#8221; in recent years, in regards to expecting our teachers to attend District SIW&#8217;s.\u00a0 I would like your help in <strong>changing that dynamic<\/strong>.\u00a0 We have a key structure in place to facilitate teacher collaboration through our District SIW time, now we need them to show up!\u00a0 I want your help getting our <strong>high school teachers to attend those trainings\/meetings outlined for their subject areas.<\/strong>\u00a0 The next District SIW is <strong>Dec. 19.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>*Principals, <strong>during our one-on-one conversation this month<\/strong> we will be visting about your school report card, budgets and I would like to do a walk through of 2-3 LA classrooms.\u00a0 Here are our scheduled times:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Nov 1, 8:00 &#8211; Etinier, 1:00 &#8211; McDonald<\/li>\n<li>Nov 6, 8:00 &#8211; White, 10:00 -Reese, 1:00 &#8211; Montgomery<\/li>\n<li>Nov 7, 8:00 &#8211; Hicks, 10:00 &#8211; Cassaro<\/li>\n<li>Franklin &#8211; still need to schedule.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>*I have added a standing agenda item to our HS Principals meetings related to our <strong>three Choice Schools.<\/strong>\u00a0 The purpose is to have an open discussion about myths\/rumors\/questions related to <strong>programming and students accessing our Choice Schools.<\/strong>\u00a0 The intention is for us to work together to clear these up and make sure our processes are transparent.<\/p>\n<p><strong>*Here is a note from our ELL expert, Kinsey:\u00a0<\/strong> We are gearing up for our second year of STAMP testing, which is a language proficiency test.\u00a0 Newcomers, and\/or\u00a0ELL students who might be at-risk or credit-deficient, can potentially earn fine arts\/elective credits\u00a0for their\u00a0native language proficiency.\u00a0 We offer this opportunity twice a year: November and April and the district will pay for a student to take the test once.\u00a0 Last year, 65 students participated, and\u00a0an average of 3.4 credits was awarded per student!<\/p>\n<p>The ELL specialist\u00a0is the primary point person for coordinating and administering this assessment in each building.\u00a0 They will work with your counselors,\u00a0grad coaches, and Latino Liaisons to identify students and record credits earned.\u00a0 ELL specialists might reach out to your building&#8217;s test coordinator if they need support.\u00a0 But mostly, this is just to inform you about this opportunity that will be happening in your buildings next month.\u00a0 If you have questions, your ELL specialist has more details, and I&#8217;m happy to help as well.<\/p>\n<p>*The <strong>Health Advisory Committee is in need of members<\/strong>. <strong>Skip Offenhauser needs at least one admin and one teacher from each level<\/strong> to help screen and recommend supplementary materials for Health instruction. Here is the potential commitment for this year:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>November \u2013 all committee meeting to review our screening process in the past and make recommended changes for the future (2 hrs)<\/li>\n<li>January \u00a0\u2013 review submitted applications ( 2hrs)<\/li>\n<li>February \u2013 listen to presentations, screen materials, make recommendations to school board (half day maybe a full day depending on the number of presentations.<\/li>\n<li>March \u2013 update to supplemental materials master list based on school board approval (1 hr)The Health Advisory Committee is in need of members.\u00a0 Skip Offenhauser needs at least one admin and one teacher from each level to help screen and recommend supplementary materials for Health instruction.\u00a0 Here is the potential commitment for this year:<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>That is the tentative schedule for this year.\u00a0 For future years the predicted schedule would be to have three meetings:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Fall \u2013 review submitted applications and send invitations to present to the committee<\/li>\n<li>Winter \u2013 listen to presentations, screen materials, make recs to school board<\/li>\n<li>Spring \u2013 update supplemental list<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Please let Skip Offenhauser<\/strong> know<strong> if you are interested<\/strong> in being part of this committee and\/or if you have any teachers at your school who would like to be part of this committee. Teachers will timesheet their time after school and TLC will pick up the cost of any subs that might be needed.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Reminders:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The deadline to apply for the <strong>Teen Intervene Pilot<\/strong> is <strong>Wednesday, Oct 31<\/strong>.\u00a0 Submit those to Lauren Wood directly.<\/li>\n<li>Don\u2019t forget to <strong>RSVP with Debbie Watkins for the reasonable suspicion training<\/strong> that will occur on Nov. 28 (2:00 \u2013 5:00pm) if you are interested.\u00a0 See Debbie\u2019s email (sent to you on Oct. 18, 4:00pm) for further details.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Calendar:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Legace and Mathisen&#8217;s <strong>Learning Lab<\/strong> is <strong>Tuesday, Oct 30 at 7:15, @ MVHS.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Boen and Mikalson&#8217;s <strong>Learning Lab<\/strong> is <strong>Tuesday, Oct 30 at 7:30 @ Skyline HS.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Our next <strong>HS Principal&#8217;s meeting is Wednesday, Oct 31 at 7:15 @ Jackson&#8217;s Corner. <\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Daylight Savings time ends on <strong>Sunday, Nov. 4.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>We have our next <strong>Leadership meeting on Monday, Nov. 5<\/strong>.
