{"id":1611,"date":"2020-05-08T20:44:23","date_gmt":"2020-05-08T20:44:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.bend.k12.or.us\/katie.legace\/?p=1611"},"modified":"2020-05-08T20:44:23","modified_gmt":"2020-05-08T20:44:23","slug":"may-8-2020","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bend.k12.or.us\/katie.legace\/2020\/05\/08\/may-8-2020\/","title":{"rendered":"May 8, 2020"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>To Do:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Translations Required for ALL correspondence &#8211; effective May 2020<\/strong>:  Every family communication from the Principal&#8217;s Office must be translated into Spanish (and\/or any languages represented by families in your school population).&nbsp; Ideas for making this work:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" type=\"1\"><li>ELL Dept staff serving your building can determine which languages are needed.<\/li><li>Meet with your front-office team to identify your designee for submitting translation requests and distributing them once received (suggestion: this should be your office manager or whoever manages the School Messenger system and\/or the production of paper copies of your communications).&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li><li>Make it clear to your designee that you are asking them, effective immediately, to be responsible for requesting translations for all school-wide parent communications (emails, newsletters, etc).&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">****************************************************************************************<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Please take a look at <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/file\/d\/1dd27wefpg9i0dttU4vZfvE4-yHtV7nVo\/view?usp=sharing\" target=\"_blank\">this one-page summary<\/a> that Kinsey has put together for schools as a follow-up regarding the <strong>Multi-Lingual Family Survey<\/strong> that she shared results of last week during our Horizontal meeting. Note the \u201cresponses\u201d at the bottom of the page to make sure your part of this is communicated and completed (on an ongoing basis).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Information:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This week, there was an amendment made in the <strong>ODE Guidance<\/strong> with respect to the number of people allowed at a graduation ceremony. The original number was<strong> 25<\/strong> and was changed to <strong>24.<\/strong> Here is the <a href=\"https:\/\/content.govdelivery.com\/attachments\/ORED\/2020\/05\/05\/file_attachments\/1443876\/ODE%20OHA%20Guidance%20on%202020%20Graduation%20and%20Moving%20Up%20Ceremonies.pdf\">amended guidance doc <\/a>with the changed number included on page 4.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">****************************************************************************************<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Rethinking Fundraising during COVID 19<\/strong>:  <em>As we navigate COVID-19 and the impacts to our communities and families in the district this spring and summer, we are asking that <strong>principals use discernment around any fundraising being considered by schools and programs<\/strong>.\u00a0 We are not putting a stop on all fundraising at this time.\u00a0 There is some acknowledgment that some schools or programs may have long-term projects in process and other unique considerations that may warrant fundraising.\u00a0 However, in general, we are asking that we do <strong>little to none of the typical fundraising events that we would do in these weeks and months to come.<\/strong>\u00a0 Out of <strong>respect for our families and businesses<\/strong>, now <strong>does not seem to be the time to be asking them to contribute to fundraisers<\/strong>.\u00a0 If there are <strong>unique circumstances <\/strong>around a specific fundraising project that you would like approval to do prior to the fall of 2020, please seek approval from your level leader before doing so.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">****************************************************************************************<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The regional<strong> Culture of Care Coaches <\/strong>are hosting a 2 day training with \u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/jimsporlederconsulting.com\/about\/\" target=\"_blank\">Jim Sporleder<\/a> (Paper Tigers) on August 20-21\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Day 1 is designed for a broad overview message about restorative justice and creating a culture of care.\u00a0 This is open to anyone.<\/li><li>Day 2 is designed for building administrators and leadership teams to go deeper<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This was planned prior to the COVID closure and we are still hoping for an in person training.&nbsp; However, we understand the format may need to change based on ODE and OHA guidance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An official flyer will be forthcoming.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">****************************************************************************************<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>National Board Certification<\/strong> recruitment has begun!\u00a0\u00a0Heather and Michele, working alongside OEA and TSPC, have 3 virtual recruitment sessions set for May.\u00a0\u00a0If you have teachers who are interested in pursuing National Board, please share the OEA flyer that is in the google folder.\u00a0\u00a0There are also several resources available for you.\u00a0\u00a0Teachers who are <strong>\u201cshoulder tapped\u201d by an administrator are more confident and eager to grow their professional learning <\/strong>in this way and become <strong>teacher leaders <\/strong>in their buildings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Check out this <strong>graphic<\/strong> about how encouraging teachers to become <strong>National Board Certified<\/strong> improve teaching and learning:  <a href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/file\/d\/12_dQqJe9jyZ4H9fqeQKdk-CM3kOicn6T\/view?usp=sharing\">https:\/\/drive.google.com\/file\/d\/12_dQqJe9jyZ4H9fqeQKdk-CM3kOicn6T\/view?usp=sharing<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Three key points of information:&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">1) HB2763 will reimburse teachers for the cost of certification once they certify&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">2) OEA has a grant to support teachers of color and novice teachers (first 5 years) in their pursuit of NB certification<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">3) MidOregon Credit Union is offering zero-interest loans for our candidates in order to support the upfront cost.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">****************************************************************************************<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">ODE is requiring that we include <strong>a statement about grading during COVID-19 on the transcript <\/strong>to explain why we moved from letter grades to Pass\/Incomplete during the spring term. This is the statement we plan to include: <strong><em>2019-20: All Oregon schools were closed from March 16, 2020, through the end of the school year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. During this time,<\/em> <em>the instruction was delivered through distance learning and Pass\/Incomplete grades were given for the final term.<\/em><\/strong> Patty Givens will add this comment <strong>centrally<\/strong>, so no need to have your registrars to this. Public schools and private schools shall designate a person or officer to establish, implement, and enforce social distancing requirements, consistent with guidance from OHA.
