If you have an employee that you don&#8217;t want to renew, then\u00a0we\u00a0have some work to do in this area before the public board meeting February 12th.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><b>By\u00a0Jan. 9th:<\/b>\u00a0Please have a conversation with me about\u00a0any certified employee that you have some\u00a0concerns about. \u00a0If you have a concern about an employee, we need to start making a plan for how to move forward with that person. \u00a0We may decide to start with informal supports or go to our formal process.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">We have several options when we are talking about\u00a0probationary\u00a0employees of concern. One option is to non-renew a\u00a0probationary\u00a0contract. \u00a0This is formally done at the Board Meeting in February. \u00a0If we decide to move toward non-renewal, we will\u00a0need to have\u00a0some\u00a0discussions\u00a0with the teacher, with the BEA, and with the board during Executive Sessions. \u00a0If you are having concerns with a\u00a0probationary\u00a0teacher, please make sure we talk about it. \u00a0Once a teacher becomes contract it can be a much harder process.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">I also need to know about\u00a0contract\u00a0teachers\u00a0that you have a concern about. \u00a0You may only be supporting the person informally, which is great, but I still need to know about them.\u00a0\u00a0If you have started the formal support system, which includes Focus Performance Review, Support Strategies, and\/or a Plan of Assistance, you must contact me so that we can work through it together.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><b>Due by Jan. 21st<\/b>: \u00a0<em>Probationary\u00a0three letters of support<\/em>. \u00a0We need to be hiring and putting the best\u00a0teachers\u00a0in front of\u00a0students. \u00a0It is an\u00a0important decision\u00a0when moving an employee from\u00a0probationary\u00a0status\u00a0to contract status. \u00a0After participating in the board process last several years, I have a better feeling for what the board is looking for in these letters.\u00a0 The board takes moving a\u00a0probationary\u00a0employee to contract status very seriously. They really want to know that each of you have specific reasons why each one of these\u00a0employees should move to contract status. \u00a0I have attached a <a href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/file\/d\/1NwRA0GBGRPIFPXQszizTw7pCGkuy5ie3\/view?usp=sharing\">spreadsheet of\u00a0probationary\u00a0three employees<\/a> and a sample of a stellar <a href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/file\/d\/15k2rFWnfLlANLmv8v1gkOK_I9pshNLYp\/view?usp=sharing\">probationary letter from Matt<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">If you have any questions, please feel free to give Jon a call.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Here is an important note from Steph Benett applications for <strong>Base Camp:<\/strong>\u00a0 We are posting our teaching positions for Base Camp so they can have a table at the 9th grade Orientations scheduled for the end of January.\u00a0\u00a0 We will leave it <strong>open until Jan. 8th<\/strong> and can keep it open if we don&#8217;t have applicants for your school.\u00a0 We have heard very good things from students that attended camp last year.\u00a0 They felt much more prepared and less anxious starting the year.\u00a0 Counselors will be referring 30 students from each MS and then we will open it up as a lottery for others to attend.\u00a0 Please notify your teachers ASAP and include this link:<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a id=\"LPlnk715475\" class=\"x_OWAAutoLink\" href=\"https:\/\/portal.bend.k12.or.us\/employee-info\/content\/base-camp-teacher\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">https:\/\/portal.bend.k12.or.us\/employee-info\/content\/base-camp-teacher<\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>MORE ABOUT BASE CAMP:\u00a0 <\/em>Base Camp is a two- week program for incoming 9th graders.\u00a0 Base Camp will run from Aug 5th-Aug 15, Monday through Thursday from 8:00-1:00. Base Camps will take place at all large comprehensive high schools, with two-three teachers from each high school.\u00a0Preferred teachers would be teachers from the high school to ensure students will have a connection to staff members at the start of the year.<\/p>\n<div class=\"x_panel-pane x_pane-entity-field x_pane-node-body\">\n<div class=\"x_pane-content\">\n<div class=\"x_field x_field-name-body x_field-type-text-with-summary x_field-label-hidden\">\n<div class=\"x_field-items\">\n<div class=\"x_field-item x_even\">\n<p>Base Camp teachers will concentrate on these categories: tours, introductions of staff, common mistakes freshman make, teamwork activities, journaling, organization and study habits, college visits and field\u00a0trips.\u00a0\u00a0Students will earn 1\/2 credit called \u00a0\u201dStudy Skills&#8221; and it will go on their transcripts in September.<\/p>\n<p>There will be two planning days prior to the camp, \u00a0and eight \u00a0(7-hour) days of teaching, for a total of 72 hours at per diem teacher rate.\u00a0Each teacher will get a 1-hour prep per day. This would be adjusted if there were 3 teachers at each HS. If there are three teachers, each teacher would work 48 hours instead of 72.<\/p>\n<p>Application Process- Short cover letter describing why you are interested in the position, and confidential recommendation form from your administrator.\u00a0 (Teachers who have previously applied, can send a letter of interest and do not need a recommendation form.)<\/p>\n<p>Please submit originals to Human Resources, Bend Education Center.\u00a0 Deadline January 8th, 2019.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><strong>Information:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>For the past few weeks, the principals have gathered input from their staff related to the question of <strong>whether to offer early bird classes and\/or athletic practices during the 2019-20 school year.<\/strong>\u00a0 As a team, they made recommendations to Shay and Jay, which have been <strong>approved<\/strong> for the 2019-20 school year:<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Early Bird Classes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>No classes will be scheduled prior to the regular 8:45 start time. We will consider offering early bird courses the following year after living with the new schedule for a year.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Early Bird Athletic Practices:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Each sport has the option of offering no more than two practices each week prior to the school start time of 8:45.<\/li>\n<li>Practices will end by 8:00, so teacher-coaches are available to assist students in classrooms, participate in meetings by 8:15 and\/or prepare for the day.
