An important message from Shay related to questions about our role in ensuring ALL of our students are safe<\/strong>: He writes, “As Bend-La Pine Schools\u2019 staff, we are committed to doing everything in our lawful power to protect our students\u2019 confidential information and ensure that our students\u2019 learning environments are not disrupted by immigration enforcement activity.” In his email this week, Shay attached this informational FAQ<\/a> that clearly explains our role in serving all students. Please read it and share the information with your staff.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here is some language from Rachel Mavis <\/strong>regarding how we address the enrollment process<\/strong> for FULL TIME GED students<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For students who are going FULL-TIME GED, the registrars would like to see the student go through the complete withdrawal process. This includes turning in iPad and other school fees. Then the will be re-activated at the home school, concurrent to one of our GED programs.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

If a student is planning on adding GED to their current school schedule, the home school enrollment (and schedule) remains intact, and a concurrent enrollment to the program is completed<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Youth Mental Health First Aid training<\/strong>: Whitney Schumacher, MPH, Suicide Prevention Coordinator<\/strong> through our awesome Deschutes County Health Services partner, has organized a Youth Mental Health First Aid training<\/strong> for staff. Staff that usually find this 8-hour training useful are those that do not have a lot of experience<\/strong> with mental health, i.e. any teachers, coaches, administrators, school nurses, family advocates, etc. School Psychologists and School Counselors don\u2019t find this training particularly useful as this is basic information they received in their training. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The training is scheduled for October 18th<\/sup> and Feb. 21st<\/sup>, 2020. There can be a maximum of 30 participants and you must register in order to attend. I know you will appreciate hearing that we have decided to discontinue the administration of Brightbytes and Gallup surveys <\/strong>beginning this school year. Happy Dance!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
