I am excited that she will be able to officially start at Elk Meadow on Wednesday!

This and That:

PE & Music: PE and Music will begin on the Thursday and Friday of the first week with students (September 17 & 18) during their regularly scheduled time. Kathy and Melissa will be sending out a schedule early this week letting you know if your grade will be on a Monday/ Thursday schedule or a Tuesday/ Friday schedule and letting you know how your students will connect. Just like classroom teachers, they will be easing students into routines, and their first few sessions may not last 30 minutes.

Student Engagement Data: Several staff members asked for information regarding the participation levels of their new students last spring. Here is a link to the participation document from the spring. Generally speaking, the more yellow weeks next to a student’s name, the more concerns we had for that student. You can also find out if they were on a modified plan in the spring. For more information, you can check in with last year’s classroom teacher, that student’s case manager, and/or the office staff.

Week 1 Survey for Families: We are almost done with the building level questions and you all will be able to also add some grade level questions as well. More information soon.

Classroom Budgets: Most years, classroom teachers have two budget sources: General Fund (the money supplied to our building by the district each year) and Student Body Funds (the money that we collect from families, fundraisers, PTO, etc.). Each classroom teacher is usually given $250 in their general fund account. The student body account usually has $100 from PTO for art supplies and another chunk of money for school supplies determined by how much money we raise and how many students are in your class – usually around $350 or higher. The total for both student body and general fund accounts for each classroom is a minimum of $700 to spend.

This year will be different. All classroom accounts still have the $250 in their general fund account, but we will not be asking families for any money this year. This means that we will not be asking for supply money (needed school supplies are being provided for distance learning), and we will not be hosting any fundraisers (PTO included). I will be in touch with PTO soon to find out if they are still able to prove the $100 per classroom for art supplies, but we will not be the additional school supply money collected from families each year. A few classes rolled the maximum of 20% at the end of last year in their student body account. Sue will send out your starting total for the year soon.

With all of this said, I don’t want you to worry about having the supplies you need to teach. We are doing a couple of things at the building level to ensure you have what you need. First, we have provided our “supply fairy” with supply lists from teams that have provided them to Sue with supplies that your team will need once we are back in the building. Additionally, I have rearranged the money in our budgets to prioritize materials for when students are back in the building. Please make sure I am aware of your supply needs.

Parks and Recreation Childcare at Elk Meadow: As most of you already know, Elk Meadow will be hosting some students for the Parks and Recreation childcare program. I know this has caused angst for some folks in our community, and I understand this. It is a bit confusing for our public to see us hosting childcare but not having school. But having these programs in our schools is really fulfilling a need for our parents. CDL is placing a burden on them that they don’t know how to overcome, and the childcare program is relieving some of that stress. Over 50% of the participants need a scholarship. Elk Meadow will have two sections of 20 students. One section will be on the south side of the gym, and one section will be in B-wing. Denise Morrel will be supporting one section during the academic block for about 2.5 hours per day, and one of the soon-to-be-hired EAs will be supporting the other section.

Recording Lessons: During Comprehensive Distance Learning, some teachers may elect to record lessons. After consulting with legal counsel, student voice, student image, and student name are ALLOWED to be recorded and uploaded/shared within your Google classroom or Seesaw classroom. So you may, if you choose, record the first lesson launch you deliver live (in Webex), save that recording to your desktop, then upload it to Google Classroom or Seesaw. Keep in mind that recordings on Webex can not be viewed for 24 hours.

Home Learning Kits: ELA Kits arrived in our building on Friday! All kits are missing whiteboards. We should have them in the building by Wednesday. Math kits are delayed for another week or two and will NOT be going out to families at distribution this Friday. I apologize for the inconvenience I know this is going to cause some teams.

COVID/ Safety related information:

COVID Metrics: Skip created this little graphic to help us read and track the county and state COVID metrics as they relate to schools. We are getting close to k-3 going hybrid. If I hear anything I will let you know as soon as I possibly can.

Sick Staff At Elk Meadow: If a staff member feels ill after entering a school site, they are to isolate themselves within the building and immediately call the office. The office member will text Tami Pike, Health Services Supervisor, at 541-350-8387 with the following information:
“This is [insert your name] and I have a staff member feeling ill. Please call me. The staff member can be reached at [insert phone number].”
Tami will call the staff member and the office member and let them know next steps.

To Do:

COVID Safety Video: Many thanks to Tami Pike and the nursing staff for creating a twenty-minute COVID training video – click here to access the directions. All staff needs to complete this training (along with the google acknowledgment form) before September 11th, but I encourage you to do it sooner, if possible.

Important Dates:

Tuesday, September 8th: 9:00 optional staff meeting (I MAY have to change the time.
