You might have some families that choose to “strike” or “walk out” on Monday; this might look like not logging on to any distance learning platforms all day on Monday. Please plan to teach and take attendance as usual. If you have any questions, please talk with Frank or Kelle.

Childcare: The district has been working with Bend Parks and Recreation to provide both a 2- and 3-day option during balanced/hybrid instruction, beginning October 26th (or later, if the district has not yet transitioned to balanced/hybrid instruction by that date). These options will be significantly less expensive than the full program. BPRD hopes to provide care for kindergarten students if they are children of staff members or siblings of other program participants. Look for a survey coming out early this week to gauge staff interest in this option.

Mini Observations: My first mini observation of the year will be during a team planning session. Please plan to watch the Safe Schools EpiPen training videos in the next two weeks (you will need your 8 digit employee ID number – same as all of your other Safe Schools videos). Complete the quiz at the end of the videos and send the certificate of completion to Ann Hollenberg. Once that is completed, she will arrange with you individually or in groups to complete the demonstration part of the training.

Dreambox and Lexia: Some teachers have heard from parents that they are doing something different than Dreambox and Lexia. While this isn’t necessarily bad, we want to make sure those other supplemental programs are done in addition to Dreambox and Lexia; not in place of. There are significant reasons we picked Lexia and Dreambox that parents might not be aware of. The analytics from these systems help teachers make instructional decisions and personalize instruction. If questioned by parents, here is some wording you can say or send:

There are many great supplemental reading and math programs out there, and many were considered by the district. However, the supplemental programs we adopted, Lexia and Dreambox, complement our core reading and math programs well and provide us with valuable information to provide instruction in a more personalized and strategic manner. The reports from these systems provide teachers with detailed information to identify each student’s strengths, learning gaps, and skills to focus on. It’s ok If other supplemental math and reading programs are used. However, these programs should be in addition to the recommended minutes for Lexia and Dreambox not in place of.

10/28 Staff Town Hall: The staff town hall last Monday 10/28 was packed full of information about safety during COVID.
