We had well over 100 students represented at our 4 reading trainings including a large percentage of our Spanish-speaking families! We decided that we might want to keep using WebEx for this purpose! Thank you, also, to the staff who popped in to show support!

COVID Spiking: As you are all aware, the positive case counts in Deschutes County have really spiked over the past couple of weeks. As a result, we’ve unfortunately had more classes quarantining around the district, which is really stressful for our impacted families and staff. Please continue to follow all of our safety protocols and enforce adherence with your students as well. It’s difficult work, and we just can’t let our guard down for a second. June is in sight! We’ve got this.

Staffing:

•Student Success Coordinator: Many of you might remember that last year (pre-COVID), we were given SIA dollars to hire a behavior position for every elementary school. Once COVID hit, those dollars came off the table. Well, lucky for us, those dollars are back, and we will have a “Student Success Coordinator” at Elk Meadow next year. I am excited to announce that Mary Dean will be filling this role at EME. Those of you who know Mary well know that she is magical with students and is particularly strong in SEL and community building. This move means that we currently have two openings at kindergarten.

•ERC Learning Specialist: As I shared at our staff meeting on Thursday, Sara has accepted a position as a district coach for ERC teachers. Because I believed that Sara had a great chance of getting this position, I was part of district SPED interviews right after spring break. We interviewed 24 candidates in addition to several in-district candidates for a handful of SPED openings throughout the district. Camille Mack has been hired to be our new ERC Learning Specialist. Camille has been serving as a Learning Specialist for the past few years in Tigard Tualatin and comes highly recommended. Please give her a warm welcome – here is her email: camillecmack@gmail.com

Student Success Coordinator: Here is some information about the new Student Success Coordinator position from Sean Reinhart. I’m super excited to implement this at EME!

Each elementary school is getting specific FTE and will hire Student Success Coordinators/Clinicians. The Student Success Coordinator/Clinician will implement and continuously improve a school-based, tier three intervention program that provides both school-wide and individualized social, emotional, and behavioral support to students. This will involve each school having a space where students can regulate, learn skills, and take breaks to be successful in their classroom environment. The Student Success Coordinator/Clinician and their team provide skill development and support to students struggling with complex, often trauma-induced, behavioral health challenges and assists them with reintegration into the general education setting. In addition to direct services to students, this position will provide school leadership/training to staff to build staff capacity in working with students struggling with complex behavioral health challenges. The Student Success Coordinator/Clinician will participate on the building leadership support team, and help lead the implementation of school-wide (universal) practices that are trauma-informed and aligned with the district social and emotional instructional framework and common practices.

BLS EdTech Bytes 4.23.21: Make sure to take a look at the EdTech Bytes from this past week. Newsela is not available for elementary (at least until the end of the year) and is a powerful resource for you and your students.

TLC Update: Please do your best to stay up-to-date on the TLC Updates sent most weeks. These are full of the latest district thinking and resources each week. Of particular note in this week’s update: a new kindergarten writing unit, several great math supports for all levels and the fourth Bruce Perry video regarding the neurosequential model.

Kindergarten Video: If you haven’t seen the kindergarten video that the district released this week, you’ve got to give it a watch. Kristin was a great ambassador for kindergarten in BLS and there are some really cute EME kindergarten faces, too!

Lunch Plans For Next Year: Please let us know your preferences for the next school year (in case we have a choice). Follow this link.
