During FALL core effectiveness this year, all teams chose a goal based around templates. This had the unintended benefit of enabling me to get around to almost all classrooms for a mini observation during template time. Between the actual observation of template time and mini debrief with the teacher, I was able to get a strong pulse for the philosophical beliefs around templates and comfort teaching them. What I was somewhat surprised to see, was how VERY closely our winter DIBELS data correlates to these mini observations. Teachers and teams that are teaching the templates DURING CORE, with confidence and understanding of their importance, and at least 4 days per week are getting EXCELLENT results on DIBELS pathways of progress. For this reason, instead of teams meeting to look at the data and set a new goal, I am setting the goal for all classroom teachers this winter. By April 1, ALL classrooms will need to be using the new templates at least 4 days per week DURING CORE. Core effectiveness time will be individualized by team based on what support your team needs to make this happen. Most teams will be meeting with our district coaches for at least a half day to make sure they know how to access and use the new templates. I was able to touch base with most grade level teams last week , and will get to the remaining teams this week.

Relationship, Responsibility and Regulation Quotes:

“Working with kids and changing behavior is a slow process, which is sometimes so hard to remember, especially in our “helper” roles. The author of the book, Pete Hall, shared a story, which is a good reminder. “When I was a child, I experienced horrific food poisoning from scrambled eggs. I’d had eggs many times prior with no ill effect, but that one dreadful event tainted my view of eggs, In fact, my systems of meaning were so impacted that I couldn’t even stomach the thought of eating an egg until nearly two decades later. The threat that came from that experience was so powerful that even though I cognitively knew I would most likely not get food poisoning from eggs again, I still refused to eat them. In a stressed state (with my “downstairs brain” activated), I was unable to process rationally, and future events were affected.” This is an example we can all relate to, and it’s not even a major trauma. Changing our systems of meaning, and changing kids’ systems of meaning is a YEARS long process.“

Article of the Week: Scientific Evidence on How to Teach Writing is Slim One quote from the article:

“Another lesson is that students also need explicit grammar and punctuation instruction but it should be taught in the context of their writing, not as a separate stand-alone lesson.
