You are all teachers, coaches, nurturers, learners, and great models for our young people. You also often are the unsung heroes of what is able to get done each day in a school. You make us work, you make us better, and you make this place truly special. Thank you now and always to our fantastic Classified Staff. Our school is so lucky to have such amazing super heroes working with our future leaders. Thank you!!!

New Golden Eagles: We are really excited to welcome Ron Lund as our new 7th grade football coach and Troy O Bryan as our new Assistant football coach! We also still are looking for a new Volleyball coach as well as an assistant Cross Country coach. If you or someone you know might be interested, please encourage them to APPLY HERE.

COVID Reminders: Thank you all for making our transition so smooth. Please remember to be the constant source of reminders for students when walking in the halls, sanitizing hands frequently, and staying 6 ft apart. Our students are doing a great job but will continue to need support as the honeymoon period wears off.

Upcoming Conferences: Middle School conferences are currently scheduled for April 14-16. In the past we have voted to consolidate the times for conferences to two days (April 14 and 15 from 8-8) in order to have Friday completely off. We need to vote to make this happen if people are interested. Please VOTE HERE for your preference.

Conferences will likely be virtual. In order to make this the most efficient and effective experience, students will do a Take Home conference prior to the sing-up opening. This means that you should work with your teams to determine what would be a good artifact for students to use in their take home conference related to your course. Because we are in a 2-week cycle of classes, Golden Week classes will need to have students complete their Take Home Conference slide for these classes on March 18th and 19th. Eagle Week courses on April 5th and 6th. Students will complete the Take Home conference between April 5th and 7th.

Conference sign ups will open on April 7th for families. That said, we will meet the week before to determine which students and families will need Invite Only conferences. Start to think about who your students are that will need to be part of an Invite Only conference. We will share more information related to conferences in upcoming updates including the documents that we will use. If you have any questions, please let me know.

Race, Equity, History, and Raising Great Humans: A Group for Learning– This group comes together every other week to discuss a variety of topics related to the issues above. It was created to learn together using a variety of media including podcasts, videos, books, and essays. During the next two-month session (March and April), we will focus on information related to Oregon’s history. As we launch this new session, we want to invite anyone to participate in some or all of the sessions. Any and all are welcome. We will share the content for each upcoming session using this list serve periodically. Please SIGN UP HERE if you are interested.

Dates: Every other Thursday (3/4, 3/18, 4/1, 4/15, 4,29)
Times: 6-7pm
Location: webex: https://bls.webex.com/meet/lisa.birk

State Testing: The federal “Education Department said Monday that it will not allow states to forgo federally required standardized testing in schools this year but will give them flexibility to delay testing or hold it online during the pandemic.” Read more in this AP article. We do not know – yet – what this means for Oregon (who had previously communicated that we would be pausing on state assessments this year), but we are sure to hear more about this as things begin to become unraveled.

SLGGs: In our stand up meeting this week, we will walk everyone through the school-wide SLGGs we will have this year. You are welcome to make your own but if you’d prefer to use school-wide info, we will share this this week. Please fire up your Talent Ed to be ready to enter information.

Attendance Information: Please remember to take attendance for students who are will you in class each day as well as your Wednesday attendance. Our kids are doing a great job! Currently, we have 97% of our students attending in person and 94% attendance during Wednesday classes.

Mid Year check-in: In our last blog I gave you three main questions to consider for our check-ins during this mid-year time. Please use THIS LINK to sign up for a time when you and I can meet to discuss these questions and start to plan for the future. The last question regarding assessment and grading is something to begin thinking about as our district begins to work intently on this topic for the next two years in secondary. Below are the questions.

In your opinion, how are things going at PCMS (beyond COVID)? What practices do you believe we should consider Adopting, Adapting, or Abandoning during the next couple of years?

Where do you see yourself in the next three years? What is your perfect assignment/role? What would you be willing to teach if it wasn’t your current role?

Over the next year, we will be digging into our grading practices to make moves to support equitable access and outcomes. What do you believe is good about your current grading practices? Where would you like to learn more? How can a student/family understand or recognize growth in your class related to course content? Related to 5Cs?

Lunch Information: Please remind students to order lunch only if they are going to take it. Lately there have been many lunches made and left on the racks that ultimately get thrown away which impacts both our waste and our plastic use.

Advisory Contacts: Although this is not an Advisory week, now would be a good time to call to connect with any family on the Advisory list that may be demonstrating some signs of struggle during the first three weeks. Although e-mails are efficient, it is likely that for those who need the most support, a call would be more impactful and create a longer-lasting and meaningful connection for both families and students. It is also a great opportunity to celebrate those who are doing a great job in this new model.

As Mandy shared previously, in Advisory coming up we will be diving into College and Career discussions. During this mini unit we will be showcasing some videos from our staff about their college experiences! If you would like to talk about your associates, bachelors, masters, or doctorate please open this slideshow and use the speaker notes on slide 1 as instructions.

Open this link: https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1h_g5ItH6KchuOMowUwxbDTU2Cdxj2P1SfraFr4bP58w/edit?usp=sharing

Make a copy

Use the instructions in the speaker notes on slide 1

Please send your video to Mandy, no later than next Wednesday 3/3/21.

Important Links:

Advisory Announcements (PLEASE USE THIS FOR CANVAS ANNOUNCEMENT IN ADVISORY!!)

Weekly Tech Tips

Upcoming Meeting Dates

EBISS Information (updated based on Wednesday’s meeting this week)

Advisory Contact Sheet (updated Tuesday of each week)

MS Standards of Practice

News from the Nest

Hybrid Schedule (English)

BLS District Return to School

This week we look forward to sending many kuddos to our Classified Staff at PCMS.
