Some crews have 7-9 sign ups so far, others are still at just 2 or 3! ACTION STEP: We are asking each crew teacher to send a “personal invitation email” to your Crew families THIS WEEK (Wednesday makes sense!). Choose to send it to your whole crew or just to the families who have yet to sign up. Our goal is 100% participation.

The idea of the email is to let your Crew families know that:

You are looking forward to meeting them… family – school relationships matter to you 🙂

SLC’s are important moments for STUDENTS – when students honestly examine their work and “own their learning” (accomplishments, areas for growth, work they are proud of, goals or next steps) in front of invested adults their academic engagement and success rates increase

Students have been preparing to lead these conferences in their classes, and we’d like to honor their preparation

It’s what we do at Realms HS!

BE SURE TO INCLUDE YOUR SIGN UP LINK AND YOUR WEBEX ADDRESS! You can access your sign up link either through your email from signup.com or right here on our group page.

Finally, make sure you are tracking along with the SLC 2021 Road Map document! By the end of this week your students should have their agendas and reflections in a folder, ready to rehearse the week after break. SLC Crew lessons will continue to be available on this same slide deck.

ONE OTHER POSSIBLE/OPTIONAL ACTION STEP: I suggest, if you can find time and of you haven’t already done this, that you take a quick tour of your Crew students’ conference prep folders on Google to see how their conference prep is coming along!

SENIOR LISTENING SESSIONS – AN UPDATE

We have conducted three now and have been really impressed with the commitment, passion and eloquence of our Seniors. Three IMPORTANT themes are:

ONE: GRADING: Many students have said that the grading scale switch has been difficult/frustrating for two reasons:

THE SWITCH: The switch itself was confusing. Grades changed overnight without warning and without the quality of the work changing! This was hard… but they are mostly “past this part” now.

HOW TO ACHIEVE a 6: They shared that with the way teachers are using the new scale, it can be very hard to get a 6, and with nothing but 5’s plus 1 or 2 4’s getting an A in a class is proving elusive! And, teachers are not using 6’s consistently… and in some classes it is totally unclear HOW to ever get a 6

The kids who brought this up ALL REALLY CARE about their grades and are committed to doing whatever they can to try and achieve at high levels. Many are trying to pull up GPA’s that were impacted by a bad freshman year or a hard school experience before coming to Brinson. Bottom line… they WANT to do well and want to know HOW to do well!

TWO: SENIOR CREW – Seniors from Skyline we talked to were eloquent in saying that Crew makes a lot of sense and is a cool structure but maybe it is a better fit for 9th – 11th grade? They shared that for seniors, many of whom do not necessarily need the credit to graduate and are at RHS for just one year, Crew feels less meaningful and relevant. One student said…. “we play board games and I want to work on my classes”. Seniors from Realms mentioned that Crew feels “different” and that it doesn’t have the same “close vibe”. None of this is new to Senior Crew teachers who have shared the struggle with us and have been working on it best they can! However, the need to “tune crew” for Seniors persists and Harju and I drafted a PLAN for 2nd trimester.

THREE: STUDENT CULTURE (esp RHS-SLHS “Divide”) – Students from BOTH groups consistently shared that they really like Realms HS this year and that they feel connected to kids regardless of which school they went to last year! They say that kids are good to each other and they like the teachers and that the RHS-SLHS divide is NOT a thing – things are GOOD on that front (at least for seniors)!

ACTION STEP: NONE right now! We will be sharing more details and suggestions on how to increase the clarity and consistency of a 6 on Thursday during our meeting after school!

AFTER SCHOOL & LUNCH TIME “CLUBS”

I am a little worried that I have not been as clear as I should or would have liked to be in communicating around this! AND… I am also not even sure right now which clubs we have up and running. I would like to confirm that this is what we have going so far??

Many of our students REALLY BENEFIT from lunch time AND after school extra curricular opp’s, especially at a small school like ours where we don’t have athletic teams (yet) or a multitude of long standing clubs! I would like to ENCOURAGE AND SUPPORT this happening!

Here is what I think we have going:

Lunch time GSA 1x/wk (MT/TR)

Lunch time Gardening Club 1x/wk (KemT)

Lunch time Culinary Club 1x/wk (KemT)

Lunch time Art Club 1x/wk (KA)

After School Board Games Club 1x/wk (YLW)

After School Math Support Homework Sessions 1x/wk (MC/BW)

ACTION STEP: If you are running a club at lunch or after school that is NOT on this list, OR if you ARE INTERESTED in helping students get a club going or want to offer something yourself (ideally after school but lunch is OK too) then please email or talk to Roger ASAP!

I will be working on writing up our “Clubs Guidelines” including what is paid extra vs not, the process for how to plan/propose and communicate to key stakeholders (RW/ZH and Jennifer and students/parents) around these clubs. Please stay tuned!

SUBJECT AREA & TEACHER BUDGETS!

Teachers DO have money to spend! Sorry I have not before this shared your “department budgets” with you! And I know this isn’t perfect because some of you span between departments so if you have ANY QUESTIONS about what you can purchase, just run it past Jennifer!! In the meantime, this sheet will give you a ballpark of what you have to spend. There is separate money for fieldwork expenses, intensives, after school clubs, and other things too. This is just your basic “classroom consumables” budget!

ALSO – The office is no longer providing snacks for after school programs. Kathie and Nut Services already provides EVERY STUDENT who wants it a FREE after school snack through the supper program, so I would prefer to save the money on school bought snacks and encourage students to take the free supper to eat after school during any clubs etc. If YOU want to provide snacks for your students in your club or rooms, you can purchase them using your “department budgets”…. Jennifer can place and order for a term’s worth of snacks for your department should you choose to use your budget that way!!

Recognize that you likely need to talk with your “department buddies” before you spend out all the dough!!

EL CREW STUDENT SURVEY

Crew Teachers: Please plan on taking 15-20 minutes to introduce and administer the EL Crew Student Survey during the week of December 6-10.
