This is a really unique year, and the reality in front of us is sensitive and tricky… and I wish it were easier and simpler, but it’s not…

The Bad News: OK, the bad news first. As you likely know, the District allowed us to be “overstaffed” this year as we navigated the merger with Skyline HS. Well, unsurprisingly, I have been informed that we will NOT be able to hold onto all of our current certified teaching staff next year, and that we will need to navigate some staff reductions at RHS. It is NOT clear yet how many exactly, and I am of course lobbying to secure additional staffing to help us as we are still, in many ways, in the “opening a new high school” phase. I am imagining that we may be reduced by at least 2 certified staff positions for next year, but likely it could be more? Possibly 3?? I have not been told a specific number yet, and that is one of the hardest parts to share with you all.

The Good News: All of our staff at RHS are “regular”, meaning the District HAS POSITIONS FOR ALL next year. I am in conversations with Katie Legace and Brad Henry and they fully understand the need to help those teachers that might end up it other sites next year to KNOW as soon as possible and to HAVE INPUT in the process as best as possible along the way! By Spring Break I expect to have our exact staffing plan umbers (meaning I will know how many staff we are allocated for 22-23) and in the meantime, I am pursuing all angles. We ALSO have the possibility of assigning teachers with some flexibility between the middle and high school next year, so that may help as well!

Your Next Step:

Please take a few minutes to fill out your “Dream Sheet” for next year BY END OF DAY MONDAY if possible. I have my next meeting with Katie on the topic of staffing Tuesday morning. This has recently been made more complicated by the district’s removal of Spotify from student iPads. The problem with being inconsistent about this is that the teachers who are holding firm to the cell phone policy (and taking phones from students who are breaking the rules) become the “bad guys”. That said, given the widespread use of headphones for private work time, I would like to give students the option to access music on their phones. So, we are proposing a new tight/loose policy. I will provide every teacher with a laminated green/red sheet that can be flipped to indicate whether cell phones may be out at that time or not. Feel free to make your own version, but I’m asking all teachers to have a clear indicator. If you want no phones allowed at all, just make sure that it is physically posted and clear!

Wanderers, Breaks & Bathroom Use: We have noticed a lot of wanderers in the halls during class recently! Please help out by sending no more than 1 student to the restroom at a time. If you are giving breaks during class, please be very explicit about where they should be during that break time (it should be within supervision of your room) AND give them a clear time limit (ideally it should be short, 5 min?)

Academic Crew Days: The support staff have created THIS LIST of students who CAN and SHOULD use the Learning Lab during Academic Crew Days. Please do not send any students to the Learning Lab if they are not on this list! All other students should remain in class to complete your Academic Crew lesson plan, which should include at least a check-in, guided assignment prioritization, work time, and debrief.

Students that are late to class (this tune up is actually still in DRAFT mode): It only took half of a year to respond to this problem (yikes! sorry!), but ZH has a new parent-outreach system for consistently late students that we are planning. Stay tuned!!

Upcoming Dates Thursday Info Night Staff Support!
