It was QUITE A YEAR and as I reflect I am filled with a huge amount of appreciation for you all! We accomplished A LOT together. The list is too long for my tired brain at this point.

I hope you are finding your way (as in ALL THE WAY) into summer mode! You deserve every minute of that you can squeeze in. I hope to hit that mode shortly myself.. maybe I will see you on the river?!

I will say one thing that I am both appreciative and proud of, and that is that we are, slowly but surely, building our #onerealms culture. And while I know it has not been without its bumps and bruises, one thing IS TRUE…. we ARE making a difference with more kids than ever before. Our reach is expanding, and that is no small thing.

I remain deeply inspired by the vision/mission at Realms… The things that unite us around community, adventure, real world learning, expeditions, students at the center and CREW… both student AND staff crew are things our world continues to need (like really need!).

Thank you for your commitment, hard work, passion, and thoughtful engagement on so many levels.

Lets go summer!!

Welcome New Staff!!

Renee Herman: Renee has accepted a position as Student Success Clinician and will be working primarily at the high school in conjunction with our Student Success and Bridge program! Renee brings clinical experience as a counselor who has also worked alongside schools as a part of her counseling work. She will be a welcome addition, and just wait until you hear about the bees and the meade!

Elinor Wilson: Elinor comes to us from RPA and will hop in with Heidi as the 2nd half of our HS science department. Elinor has 5 years of experience teaching HS science and designing AWESOME overnight “Jan Term” classes akin to our Intensives. Elinor is leaping into AP physics training this summer and, I think you will agree (when you meet her) that Elinor is going to keep some of our “Martha vibes” alive here next year!

New Learning Specialist @ RHS – yet to be hired! If you hear of a SPED person who wants to be a part of an amazing team, LET ME KNOW!!!!

New Curriculum Secretary/Accounting Technician @ RMS – yet to be hired!: This is a new position to join our office team and this person will serve and support BOTH SCHOOLS (as do all of our office staff). Dante will keep teaching 8th grade math but will step away from Crew and 7th grade in order to take on a section up at the high school. Dante will teach Math 105 (Math in Society) for 2 trimesters and a section of Math 2 (10th gr) with Lauren for 1 trimester.

Lauren McAllister: Lauren will be moving from SPED Learning Specialist to Math teacher (and superhero) for us at RHS. Lauren co-taught math earlier in her career and is a closet math geek, so we are stoked to have her in this new role.

Kat Tomsic: Kat will focus the vast majority of her efforts next year running the Bridge and Student Success program at the MS…. and, she is excited to jump BACK into teaching Crew, this time at the MS!

Lynda Beauchamp: Lynda is returning!! After some serious world travels we are excited to have Lynda back. She will teach 6th and 7th grade math and 6th grade Crew. Other assignments TBD based on final master scheduling!

Revised Bell Schedule For 2023-24

IMPORTANT CHANGE FOR 23-24! The District has determined that we will move to an 8:45 start time and 3:45 end time along with the rest of the secondary schools in the District! It will certainly be an adjustment, and is something that I have been aware of but was working closely with folks at the District to “manage” before I was ready to “accept”. The main issue was our students’ access to athletics and getting to practice on time. That has now been solved.

I want to acknowledge that this is a pretty big change! We have become really accustomed the 60 minutes between the start of the work day and classes, and that is dropping to 45. Similar at the end of the day…. we have become accustomed to 40 minutes of time to “get sh*&$!t done” and now we will have just 15! This is the water that ALL of the other Bend LaPine teachers swim in, and we WILL get used to this new water… but I am confident that we will ALL FEEL IT at first. And it will likely feel hard! On the other hand, we will no longer be out of compliance with ODE based on too few instructional minutes and our kids will have 40 more instructional minutes in front of our amazing teacher… and there is an equity argument to be made in favor of that!!

How Are We Going To Use That Time?

At the middle school where we have a 6 period day, we plan to simply add 5 minutes to every class and lunch (which is 5 minutes shorter than at the HS). See the times on the schedule below.

At the high school it is a little more complicated as 80 minute classes simply felt too long. SO… we are moving to a 72 minute class period for all 5 periods, identical to the comprehensive high schools. What that means is that we have expanded the time for Crew in the HS… which might leave you wondering… what will that look like?! We have a plan for how to use the expanded crew time in a way that will be, we believe, really positive and engaging for our students and sustainable for our Crew teachers. By the way, we now have 3 crews at every grade level from 6th – 12th! We will have an overview of our plan for how Crew will look similar and different at RHS next year by early August – stay tuned!

This DOES work out in terms of our staggered lunch periods (MS-HS), although there will be MORE of an overlap next year than this year between the two. However, having thought it through we are comfortable with it.

23-24 RMS-RHS Bell Schedule

Extra Duty Positions Available

ICCL – looking for one more middle school team member to join Delaney and our bigger ICCL team.
