I hope you all have a great Monday with kids. Please know that you ARE likely to run into some logistics challenges: kids not present, kids struggling with iPad issues, WebEx challenges, Canvas… who knows! So, be flexible – lets try and get connected as best we can with all our kids! If lessons plans don’t get followed… well, they are just lesson “plans” after all, right?!

I am asking Jen Rule and Lisa J to be on deck for any and all iPad issues in the morning. JScal will be on deck for any and all password, studentvue, canvas challenges. Remember to PUBLISH all your courses including Crew!

I would say “take a deep breath”, but that seems counter intuitive right now! So instead, how about…. “keep smiling”!

Yours in Crew,

Rog

Canvas Ready Student Module Plan For Mon/Tues

Thanks to KA and KT for mapping out this plan. Teachers, You can view the plan here. Please recognize that there are some “To Do’s” here for you prior to your Monday morning Per 1 & 2 classes!

** Jen R or I will email our students who are in POLO during Period 1 & or 2 and get them started on it asynchronously!

Synchronous Learning Norms

Brad, Yen Ling and I worked on these yesterday and are comfortable with where we landed. There is a Google Doc version and a “cleaned up PDF version” (screenshot below) to share with families. These norms are primarily focused on SYNCHRONOUS learning, and we do think it would be good to create some ASYNCH learning norms aligned to our Habits of Scholarship. That may be our next work.

Regarding cameras on/off, this will very likely be the one that gets pushed by students. We DID discuss the fact that there will be times when it is BETTER for students to turn cameras off so they can concentrate on a reading or on a quick task/problem. However EVERYONE agrees that there are VERY important reasons to be able to have all kids keep cameras on. SO…. our norm is to arrive with cameras on and follow teacher direction. I suggest you post some of these norms in the “message in your wait room” for the 1st couple of days next week so kids see them or some of them before entering the WebEx!

We do not yet have a “what if a student simply does not turn their camera on when asked plan”! Coming soon. For now, note it and plan to follow up with student!

WEBEX NORMS FOR STAFF? And lastly, we might consider some guidelines or “things to remember” for staff leading WebEx classes from home!

Be aware of what is in the background of your own camera!

Model the kind professionalism/work area set up that we want our students to demonstrate

Be aware that what you say in class may be “overheard” by parents in the home

Do your best (I know, this can be hard) to minimize “unscheduled interruptions“, at least during classes. The lessons and assignments can be found in the unpublished Realms HS Crew course in Canvas and are ready to import into your own Crew in Canvas!! We will save some time in our staff planning work on Wednesday to check in on the mechanics of how this is going! The agendas can also be found in our Overview: First 3 weeks of Crew 2020

If anyone is struggling with figuring out their Crew lesson plan please reach out! Kat, Karen, Yen Ling and Brad all were “outside” the Crew team’s work on Friday so may need some support?? How about Crew folks use the Slack channel for any immediate help needs prior to Monday!

Please ALSO save a little time in Crew on Monday to find out about any kiddos with schedule problems or who might be missing Canvas courses they need. Some of these logistics during our 1st two days will be critical!

Work Hours, Staff Meetings and Work Locations This Week

Work Hours:

Based on the outcome of our “Quick Start Time Vote” the number of staff who voted to keep the 8:30 – 4:30 teacher work day slightly outnumbered those who preferred 8-4. So, we’ll stick with 8:30 – 4:30 for this 1st 6 week chunk and ANY developments I hear about start/end/bus times for when (?) we go hybrid I will update you as soon as I know!

Staff Meetings:

Daily DeBriefs: Please set aside 4:00 – 4:30 for a “daily debrief” on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday this week. I will tune up agendas as best as I can but I suspect that Monday and Tuesday will be some basic “troubleshooting”. These daily debriefs will be on WebEx.

Wednesday SIW afternoons: SIW afternoons on Wednedays will be on site. Wednesday morning time is for your curriculum planning, student work feedback, Canvas uploading etc etc etc! Please set aside 1:30 – 4:30 for SIW type activities and THIS WEEK it might look something like:

1:30 – staff crew

2:00 – housekeeping

2:15 – students of concern tracking

2:45 – canvas tips & tricks

3:15 – small planning teams (TBD)

Work Locations:

This CDL thing is a juggle for families!! Both our students’ and our own! SO… Teachers may work from home. Please note that if you are having bandwidth issues at home, then I would strongly encourage you to consider teaching your synchronous WebEx classes from school where the WIFI is solid!

For now, Daily Debriefs will be on WebEx and SIW’s will be on site.

Asynchronous Afternoons & Targeted Study Groups

Targeted Study Groups: I have asked our SPED team to get a plan together for starting our Targeted Study Groups by Monday September 21st! This will include student groupings, time, staff member attached AND a way for us to communicate these groupings and schedules with families/students.

Building Asynchronous Habits: In the meantime, PLEASE DO take some time in your classes AND/OR in Crew to address and be clear with students what work they need to be doing in the afternoons this week. We want to help students QUICKLY build a routine and some healthy skills around using their asynchronous time effectively.

Possible Attendance Taking Plan For Asynch: I HAVE been thinking a bit about our attendance taking plan from this week and am rolling around the idea of asking kids to log into their “next day classes” each afternoon to answer a quick “prepare for class tomorrow” question on Canvas. This would allow us to take attendance for those periods that day AND ensure our kids are thinking ahead about their class the next morning. MORE TO COME ON THIS POSSIBILITY!

Week 1 iPad Tips For Students

Lisa and Jen have been pretty darn buried over the last few days with iPad challenges. Both Lisa and Jen will be on deck and ready Monday morning to solve iPad issues as best as they can! If a student has a password issue – send them to Jenifer and not to Jen or Lisa!

Here are some things YOU can share with students so they can try to solve their own problems:

Turn it on and complete any and all updates including iOS updates in the SETTINGS (this could take up to 30 min)

Check your WIFI connection

If there is a WIFI problem, check you VPN. If the VPN is not working go to Self Service on your iPad and re-install Global Protect (this could take 30 seconds to over an hour). After you install it, re-start your iPad and check the WIFI connection

Open Canvas using the red BLS Canvas icon on your home screen. Log in using your username (firstnamelastname) and your personal district password. IF you are unable to open or log in here, swipe out of all open apps, and try it again. AND/OR you can enter this URL into a browser and access Canvas directly: bls.instructure.com

If you have forgotten your District password, please contact jennifer.scalley@bend.k12.or.us as soon as possible

**************************

If you have tried all this and STILL can not connect to your home WIFI or you still can not log into Canvas, DON’T PANIC!!

You can ALWAYS attend your Monday morning WebEx classes from a different device… your phone or a home computer or laptop. All you need is an internet connection and your District username (firstnamelastname) and your personal district password!!

Bend LaPine also has an iPad trouble shooting website here with tips for families from basic to advanced.

Lastly, you can log directly into your 1st period WebEx classroom using the 2020-21 RHS Org Chart – Webex.pdf .

Hey staff!
