{"id":91,"date":"2018-09-30T14:07:21","date_gmt":"2018-09-30T14:07:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.bend.k12.or.us\/roger.white\/?p=91"},"modified":"2018-09-30T14:46:53","modified_gmt":"2018-09-30T14:46:53","slug":"systems-check","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bend.k12.or.us\/roger.white\/2018\/09\/30\/systems-check\/","title":{"rendered":"Systems Check!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Hey Team!<\/p>\n<p>It feels like the word of the week this week (and maybe next) is &#8220;systems&#8221;&#8230; not necessarily the most pedagogically inspiring word, but it <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/document\/d\/1EnKKdaVaeiX7Se-HLxPK5D_9yihpJLX3OBXWYDS9sR0\/edit#\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-94 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.bend.k12.or.us\/roger.white\/files\/2018\/09\/classroom-management-graphic-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"339\" height=\"339\" \/><\/a>important nonetheless so that hopefully YOU ALL can spend your time an energy working on the more pedagogically inspiring stuff!!<\/p>\n<p>On Thursday we tuned up the Realms MS system of classroom expectations and we should be ready to roll these out towards the end of this week. I added this graphic (click to go to full size and doc) to our system as a reminder that while we spent some time on Thursday tuning and calibrating our classroom expectations, <strong>it is really strong relationships, effective lesson design and quality curriculum that go furthest towards growing a classroom culture that mixes rigor, joy and success for all kids! <\/strong>I encourage you to take a look at the document as it stands now and add any tweaks or revisions using the Comment feature. Full folder of teacher docs and &#8220;classroom poster&#8221; is on the portal and is called <a href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/drive\/folders\/1wUqZriJKz4GAo3ETaQrrb3likymC39wF\">RHS Classroom Consistencies<\/a><\/p>\n<p>I would like to get our final &#8220;seal of approval&#8221; on this system on Wednesday afternoon and then plan a rollout before the end of the week.<\/p>\n<p>Some systems that we have built in the last two weeks:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Purchasing\/ordering system<\/li>\n<li>Fieldwork proposal\/planning system<\/li>\n<li>Classroom consistencies\/management system<\/li>\n<li>Gradebook Set Up<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>POW ASSEMBLY MONDAY AFTER LUNCH &#8211; ooops!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Yikes &#8211; this snuck up on me, SO SORRY! Matt Fox invited us to join in on this free assembly for Skyline HS and Realms HS kids. I have had it on our calendar since mid August but forgot about it, and when I went back into the cal late Friday I realized it was on MY calendar not the Staff Internal &#8211; ooops.<\/p>\n<p>This assembly will be for both schools from 12:40 &#8211; 1:30 (maybe 1:45) so Harju, Paul and Mark, your classes will be impacted! \ud83d\ude41 Again, super sorry this snuck up on me. However, on the upside, Matt assures me it is a super cool experience for our kids!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Would it make most sense to have a shortened academic class after this assembly from 1:30 &#8211; 2:20 and skip Office Hours on Monday?? I will let Paul, Harju and Mark drive this decision since it is their classes that are impacted here! Lets check in 1st thing Monday am, or correspond by email to confirm.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/protectourwinters.org\/hotplanetcoolathletes\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-98\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.bend.k12.or.us\/roger.white\/files\/2018\/09\/Screen-Shot-2018-09-29-at-7.31.00-PM.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"459\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>FIELDWORK PROPOSALS &#8211; revisions and your &#8220;stamp of approval&#8221;<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Our fieldwork proposal system that we developed this week has two goals:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>make sure that we are all aware of and have the chance to OK fieldwork outings before they get decided<\/li>\n<li>help support the fieldwork planners as a guide to the planning steps so that f\/w is educationally rich, logistically smooth, and the planning steps happen <em><strong>on time.<\/strong><\/em><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Can each of you make sure you have looked at and weighed in on your level of comfort with our <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/document\/d\/1KmeDNCa16AGjDhNo8VLBahSUZlaTTS7AKIPIes6URV0\/edit\">9th gr fired up f\/w proposal<\/a> to make sure you have OK&#8217;d it (missing Paul, Karla, Karen). Also, the 10th gr Power &amp; Privilege trip proposed by Michelle and Paul has been &#8220;cancelled&#8221;. After thoughtful discussion, Paul and Michelle decided that between the tight timeline and heftier price tag the students would be better served with some local fieldwork which I believe they are intending for that same Thursday October 18th &#8211; stay tuned.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>KITCHEN HELPERS<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We have a team of kitchen helpers &#8211; yahoo. The &#8220;prep shift&#8221; starts a little before lunch begins, so they can be dismissed from class at 11:55 on M, T, TH, F and the &#8220;clean up shift&#8221; should be back in your class 10 minutes after lunch ends, at 12:45. I will ask Colin to publish a schedule or at least a list of who might be leaving early or returning late!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>PUMP &amp; STRETCH ROUND 2<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I will post the lists on Monday morning but we only have 65 students signed up so far, so I am going to wait to publish until 9:15 am so that I can catch at least another 10 or so kids before school Monday morning,\u00a0 with a QR code to the form. If you can remind students at the start of 1st period to get their sign up in it would be great! And then if you could post the lists (I will email them to you) at the end of 2nd period so students know where to go it will make that transition much smoother! Thanks for getting toe form out there!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>PD MEETING TOPICS FOR THIS WEDNESDAY<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Check the <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/document\/d\/1ghpcWG6J1P4gFixUREnTlokAIo2TN_51ORYeOuZTTXY\/edit\">Planning\/PD calendar<\/a> &#8211; major focus for this Wednesday is on Crew and Habits of Success.<\/li>\n<li>Looking ahead, we have Sarah P and Tony A coming back on site next Tuesday and Wednesday!<\/li>\n<li>Planning on our 1st &#8220;Students of Concern&#8221; meeting this Thursday from 2:30 &#8211; 3:30.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>ENROLLMENT UPDATE<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Looks like we are withdrawing Luanna Gorsuch and Renata Kronberg.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>For Luanna, Realms HS is too big (she was feeling anxious I guess) as she was used to her previous school that had something like 30 kids total!!<\/li>\n<li>For Renata, it was the opposite. She had been to a small start up charter in CA previously and wanted a bigger school that was a little more &#8220;traditional&#8221; for her HS experience.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>POST VISIT LETTER FROM SARAH PURDY!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_gmail-m_-6338931302794472520gmail-m_-9145607165934496528gmail-p1\"><span style=\"font-family: trebuchet ms, sans-serif\">Dear Realms teachers,<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_gmail-m_-6338931302794472520gmail-m_-9145607165934496528gmail-p1\"><span style=\"font-family: trebuchet ms, sans-serif\">Thank you so much for welcoming me into your classrooms and community two weeks ago! (plus I saw many long term targets!)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul class=\"x_gmail-m_-6338931302794472520gmail-m_-9145607165934496528gmail-ul1\">\n<li class=\"x_gmail-m_-6338931302794472520gmail-m_-9145607165934496528gmail-li1\"><span style=\"font-family: trebuchet ms, sans-serif\"><b>Enriching Crew meetings<\/b> including opportunities for students to check in and participate in purposeful initiatives. I loved how students are not only deciding on norms but creating norms posters to decorate and beautify classroom crew spaces. A special shout out to the gummy bear challenge as well! (How fun to do with staff sometime!)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul class=\"x_gmail-m_-6338931302794472520gmail-m_-9145607165934496528gmail-ul1\">\n<li class=\"x_gmail-m_-6338931302794472520gmail-m_-9145607165934496528gmail-li1\"><b>Evidence of inquiry<\/b> in Expedition plans: From a Power and Privilege walk, to exploring questions from the Fired Up fieldwork, to a mural walk in the community, to connecting music to mathematical skills, I loved seeing evidence of learning expeditions that engage student curiosity, provide opportunities to analyze multiple perspectives, and avoid singular &#8220;right&#8221; answers.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul class=\"x_gmail-m_-6338931302794472520gmail-m_-9145607165934496528gmail-ul1\">\n<li class=\"x_gmail-m_-6338931302794472520gmail-m_-9145607165934496528gmail-li1\"><b>Positive student self reporting<\/b> of the Realms community.
