As in 18 more days of school remaining!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator is-style-wide\" \/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Updates, Reminders, Department Info and Rants\u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Evaluating N135 staff<\/strong> &#8211; &nbsp; If you have any staff that have been hired for part of this year (maybe N135 or temp due to a LOA and are not a sub for the ESD), it is in your best interest to at least do a partial observation cycle.&nbsp; So, if they are half year hired and are probationary,&nbsp; do 1 formal and 1 mini for example. You should also complete a summative eval, but be sure in the comment section, you mention it being only for the time period you state.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>From Julie &#8211;&nbsp; &nbsp; <\/strong>The Foundational Skills Curriculum Review and Adoption Team Update<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The committee has come to consensus.&nbsp; The Really Great Reading Program (Countdown, BLAST, HD Word and HD Word Plus) has been recommended for K-5 Foundational Skills.&nbsp; The committee will seek board approval of the recommendation at the May 24th board meeting. &nbsp; Implementation will begin in the 22-23 school year.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sign up to view materials in-person <a href=\"https:\/\/forms.gle\/gDSQUQ5EKWehhj3s9\">here.<\/a> You can also view materials digitally and provide feedback<a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/document\/d\/1N4D4gfDACldk7e_w23jKJkjQ2J0OsE2_ZOQ9sj2MT28\/edit?usp=sharing\"> here<\/a>.&nbsp; Please be sure to sign up for professional learning opportunities <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/document\/d\/14KsaC-hufxdHFBXQVaCbd9jAJBclWz2y32-3BDmrPis\/edit?usp=sharing\">here<\/a> (these meet day 189 requirements, too).&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A few things to keep in mind about the adoption and implementation of Really Great Reading:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>It is created and based on the most current Science of Reading research<\/li><li>When it comes to foundational skills, instructional practices and teacher knowledge are key to student success.&nbsp; Professional learning and collaboration is key.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li><li>&nbsp;We need to make some shifts in our instructional practices based on the latest science on how children learn to read.&nbsp; It is important to keep in mind the following instructional shifts:<ul><li>Phonics skills taught both in isolation and in context.&nbsp; Word-level fluency is practiced in decodable text to increase fluency.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li><li>Shift from teaching memorization of high frequency words to teaching what is regular and irregular about each word, supporting orthographic mapping.<\/li><li>Teach grade-level phonics\/morphology skills while meeting students where they are on the scope and sequence<\/li><li>Advanced phonological awareness instruction is critical in K-1 and in 2-5.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li><li>Spelling is not taught as a memorization exercise but as word study along with dictation.&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>From Lora &#8211; &nbsp; <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/file\/d\/1dCrb2mlN-ZrFktcaICDWDMIoO7HlCqIi\/view?usp=sharing\">Here is the information<\/a> about next year\u2019s pre-service week that we discussed at our meeting on Monday.
