To Do

From Katie and Stephen:

Every MS and HS admin team needs to set up a one on one check-in with Katie Lyons to check in on SBIG at their site. As a reminder, Katie is our SBIG TOSA and a wonderful resource for our staff. Please plan on around 30 minutes for these visits. Katie will check in on how it’s going, what questions remain, and ask about what support your site might need. Here is a document to sign up.

TOSA Corner

From Torie Withers (LA):

At our upcoming October 14 Educator Network Day, secondary Language Arts teachers will engage in breakout sessions offering support with Standards-Based Instruction and Grading (SBIG), shared assessments, and grade-level or course planning. Teachers can also build on our mini-conference work through backward design: connecting a priority standard with a shared assessment and determining what each performance level—including advanced (4) and proficient (3)—looks like when demonstrated in that assessment. Teams choosing this focus will develop or refine common rubrics to guide instruction and make expectations clearer for students. These sessions will respond to teachers’ current needs while strengthening alignment among instruction, assessment, and grading across classrooms and schools.

From Lisa Keown – CTE Coordinator

📅 Upcoming Event – Skilled Trades Fair – Friday, November 20

The Skilled Trades Fair gives students a chance to connect with industry professionals, explore careers in the skilled trades, and learn about training, education, and apprenticeship opportunities.

The fair will take place on Friday, November 20, from 9:00 a.m.–1:00 p.m. at the First Interstate Bank Center at the Deschutes County Fairgrounds.

The district will fund one bus per school. HDESD will cover substitute costs for up to two CTE teachers per school to attend the fair.

HS Only

From Katie:

Just a reminder that the October 28 HS Only END session has been changed to a building directed SIW.  Here is the HS admin support rotation schedule for the four END sessions this year.

From Dean:

Reminder that we will be discussing Learning Walks Round 1 on Tuesday, October, 13th.  Here are the details again:

Round One: Conversations About Standards-Based Instruction

Round One will focus primarily on the 5D dimensions of Purpose and Assessment for Student Learning. Early in the school year, each administrator will engage at least five teachers in a brief conversation intended to better understand how standards are being identified, taught, and assessed.

Administrators will ask:

  1. What standards are you focusing on right now?
  2. What exemplars are you using to teach those standards?
  3. Can you share the rubric you are using to assess those standards with me?

These conversations are intended to build shared understanding around the key components of standards-based instruction and provide a foundation for the classroom-based Learning Walks that follow. We will debrief the answers at the High School Horizontal meeting on October 13th with the following questions:

  • What patterns or trends did you notice across the conversations you had with teachers?
  • Where did you see the strongest alignment between the standards being taught, the exemplars being used, and the rubrics used to assess learning?
  • Based on what you heard, what might be one next step for your building to strengthen clarity and consistency around standards-based instruction?

From Scott in IT:

Greetings,

Students can now access YouTube on lab computers and laptops when signed in with their Bend-La Pine credentials. This change supports teacher requests for YouTube access for specific curriculum needs and projects.

Access is filtered and provides an experience similar to what middle and high school students had in previous years.

This access is available only on lab computers and laptops. All YouTube Buddy rules and restrictions remain in place for student iPads.

Please contact your IT Client Services team members with any questions.

Have you seen it?

Congratulations to Kathy Russell, Office Manager at LPHS, who won the BLOG drawing last week!

That image is from one of Brian Barringer’s favorite shows – Suits which ran from 2011-2019!  Did you know that the showrunner was inspired by his own life?  In an interview with Collider in 2016, showrunner Aaron Korsh revealed that the series was based upon his own experiences. He told the publication, “I worked for a guy named Harvey, I had a good memory, and I had a dalliance with marijuana.”

Even though Harvey is inspired by a real character, the premise of Suits evolved a lot while the show was in development. As Korsh told Collider: “I went to business school. I was a finance major. I worked on Wall Street as an investment banker.” His unusual route to TV writing built the groundwork for the hit series.

Ready for another round of Have you seen it?, where we will show a screen shot from one of our team member’s favorite movie or TV show. If you recognize the screen shot, reply to Katie and Stephen with the name of the movie or show (NO AI help), and you will be entered into a drawing for a beverage to be delivered to your place of work. (Anyone can participate but the drawing will be limited to MS/HS admin and office managers!)

Check out the image from Sean Keating’s favorite movie! Recognize the movie or TV show? Let Stephen and Katie know.
