{"id":1438,"date":"2022-06-03T23:03:58","date_gmt":"2022-06-03T23:03:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.bend.k12.or.us\/the-special-edge\/?p=1438"},"modified":"2022-06-14T21:56:27","modified_gmt":"2022-06-14T21:56:27","slug":"the-special-edge-6-14-22","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bend.k12.or.us\/the-special-edge\/2022\/06\/03\/the-special-edge-6-14-22\/","title":{"rendered":"The Special Edge, 6\/14\/22"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong><span style=\"color: #28dbde\">Nurse Spotlight<\/span><br><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>This has been a tough year.&nbsp; In the midst of all of this, one of our district nurses has received recognition by her school as going above and beyond\u2026.<\/p>\n<p><em>Let me introduce you to<\/em> Cynthia Serra RN, who has been a nurse for 24 years and a Consulting School Nurse for Bend-La Pine schools since 2009. This year Cynthia was awarded an <em>Excellence in Education Award by Ensworth Elementary <\/em>and was recently selected as a finalist for the&nbsp;<em>Bend-La Pine Schools Support Staff Person of the year <\/em>award which is decided in the fall.<\/p>\n<p><strong>During our interview I asked Cynthia the following questions:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>How long you have worked in the district? <em>Cynthia started with Bend-La Pine in 2009<\/em>.<\/li>\n<li>What do you like most about being a school nurse? \u201c<em>I like connecting with students and providing stability for them.\u201d<\/em><\/li>\n<li>What is one of your favorite Bend-La Pine work accomplishments? \u201c<em>Learning about Trauma Informed Care and using that knowledge when working with students.\u201d<\/em><\/li>\n<li>You were recently awarded an Excellence in Education Award by Ensworth Elementary and were selected as a finalist for the&nbsp;Bend-La Pine Schools Support Staff Person of the year award. How does that make you feel? \u201c<em>It feels great, but I believe all staff deserve an award for working through this pandemic.\u201d<\/em><\/li>\n<li>What do you like most about working at Ensworth<em>? \u201c I enjoy having the ability to help support the parents of students, as they already have so much on their plates.\u201d<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Here is a comment from Cynthia\u2019s supervisor:<\/strong><br>\u201cCynthia is an inspiration to so many with her relentless, wholehearted support and dedication to her school community as well as to her Bend-La Pine Schools Nursing Team. Her commitment to the health and safety of students and staff is praiseworthy.&nbsp; She is an invaluable member to our district, and we are thankful to have her by our side.\u201d shared Tami Pike, Supervisor of Health Services, Bend-La Pine Schools.<\/p>\n<p>We also wanted to share with you some of the reasons that the staff at Ensworth Elementary felt compelled to honor Cynthia with her Excellence in Education Award;<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<em>Cynthia is very knowledgeable and has been working incredibly hard over the last couple of years to ensure the safety&nbsp;of staff, students and even families. I love how approachable she is and how she treats everyone with such kindness.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u201c<em>Cynthia has faced the many challenges and changing circumstances of the last few years with patience, understanding, wisdom, and grace. Cynthia always is willing to step in and support our teachers and staff any way she can. As staff members were faced with sickness and navigating this year, she always answered our call with a comforting, calm, and patient voice. I know families also appreciated having someone with so much grace and understanding answer their calls. I am thankful to have her walking by our side.
