8th Grade Fly Up Day

On Monday, March 3rd, our 8th grade students will have the opportunity to visit their forecasted high school to participate in a Career and Technical Education Fly-Up Day. The goal of this day is to get students into their high school to learn about the many options they will have next year. Buses will leave at 9:30 and return at 12:30.

Winter Adventures Begin Next Week!

We will be taking the students up to Virginia Meissner for Cross Country skiing starting next week!  Permission slips are going home today, be on the lookout!  Find them attached below as well, along with a list of groups to find out which days your student is going.  Some students have chosen to go with a different research group; they should know who they are and are also listed on the linked lists.  Feel free to call the office if you have questions.

We provide all of the ski gear needed, but please watch the weather and make sure your student is dressed appropriately; layers are good!

Entry into the Choice Options lottery, Dual Immersion lottery, and Priority Area Change Requests all require a current enrollment in a Bend-La Pine School for the school year requested. Enrollment for the 2025-2026 is open.

This school year our 3rd through 8th grade students will take the Oregon Statewide Tests. Parents have the right to opt their child out of the English Language Arts and/or the Math tests. We have made it a mission to be creative and smart about how we administer the OR Statewide Tests. We are not going to make students sit for hours at a time testing; we are going to offer them fun snacks, breaks when needed, and all the support we can give. We would like to take this opportunity to turn this challenge into a fun and meaningful experience.

VRB Committee Unite!

It’s time to hit the ground running and get donations for our annual FUN-raiser happening April 24th, and we need your help! Looking for people to help us gather donations from the community for our raffle packages. We are having a site council meeting next Wednesday the 19th at 8:15 in the library with more details. 

If you can’t make it to the meeting but still want to participate in some way, please email [email protected]. 

We will continue to meet leading up to the event so stay tuned…

Village Council Meeting, Feb 26

Please join us to come together and talk about planning and organizing a fantastic and educational spring for our students. We need volunteers for skiing, our FUNraiser, a trip to the High Desert, library, garden, clubs, track, and more! 

Save the Date: Village Rhythm and Bingo is Apr 24

Our annual FUN-raiser is right around the corner! It is a really great event that is produced in collaboration with WVMS staff, students, and Friends of Westside Village.  The event on April 24th at the Unitarian Church,  includes appetizers, dinner, beverages, bingo, and lots of prizes! Also, there is free babysitting at school! Ali, one of our incredible volunteer parents, is leading the event. Below is a message from her:

Friendship Day Activities

Valentine’s Day is celebrated at WVMS by celebrating healthy friendships and kindness. This is always an emotional time for students. Some children have unrealistic expectations with relationships. We really try to help everyone build relationships, reach out to those that they do not know as well, and have fun with friends. We DO NOT promote this as a romantic adult event.

Friendship Day at School, Friday, February 14th

-We remind our community that this day is about healthy friendships, not romantic love or the commercialism around the day.  It’s about having fun, being a great friend, and enjoying festivities.

-Please do not feel pressured to send Valentine cards.  If you do, please do not put names on the cards.  Students will make bags at school to collect any treats being passed out.

-If your child has a special gift for someone, please try to do it outside of school. In school, this can make other students feel excluded.

-Students can make big posters to share with communities, buy a small treat for their community (something that has at least 50 for each upstairs community, 50 for Centers, and 75 for Elders), write quotes to put in bags, pencils, erasers, (preferably something that is not single use plastic).

You all are invited to a Friendship Day Tea and mini performance at 3:00! If you can make it, great. If not, please do not worry. This is a no-pressure event!

Youngers & Olders Ice Skating Wednesday, February 12th

Youngers and Olders will be Ice Skating on Wednesday, Feb 12th to celebrate friendship!  Permission slips wet home this week, or find it attached here.  The cost is $7 per student (can be paid with cash, check or card in the office or with this link). We will start our day with a walk to the Pavilion!  We will leave right at 8:35.  We will arrive back at school around 11:45/12:00.  Please make sure your student knows their shoe size or write it on their hand so that skate fitting will go smoothly and quickly and we can get more skating in!

Centers & Elders Ice Skating Thursday, February 13th

Centers and Elders will be Ice Skating on Thursday, Feb 13th to celebrate friendship!  Permission slips went home this week, or find it attached here.  The cost is $7 per student (can be paid with cash, check or card in the office or with this link).  We will have an early lunch and walk to the Pavilion, leaving school around 12:30/12:45.  We will arrive back at school around 3:15/3:30.  Please make sure your student knows their shoe size or write it on their hand so that skate fitting will go smoothly and quickly and we can get more skating in!

Donations Needed by Jan 31

Innovative Art Camp (for students during school) is coming up during conference week and we could use some help with materials for one of our rotations. We are doing a grocery bag sewing project and we need Duck Canvas and 100% Cotton Fabric for it. It can be found at Joanne’s (Aisle C32 and the Quilter’s Aisle to be exact!). We need 2/3rds of a yard of each for each bag, plus one spool of matching thread. No scraps, please. Thank you!

The Youth Truth Survey is a district-wide survey that we ask students, families, and staff to complete so that we can better our schools. Our Bend LaPine District and schools use the information from the survey to plan for school improvement.

8th Graders- Priority ACR Window Closes Jan 24

8th grade families- If your student would like to attend a high school that is not your boundary school or if they are interested in one of the Choice Option high schools, now is the time to get those applications in! The deadline for Priority ACR (Area Change Request) and Choice Options Applications is next Friday, January 24th. You can still apply after this date, however, it will not be prioritized. Youth Truth Survey

The Youth Truth Survey is a district-wide survey that we ask students, families, and staff to complete so that we can better our schools. Our Bend LaPine District and schools use the information from the survey to plan for school improvement.

2024-25 Oregon Statewide Tests (OSAS)

This school year our 3rd through 8th grade students will take the Oregon Statewide Tests. Parents have the right to opt their child out of the English Language Arts and/or the Math tests. We have made it a mission to be creative and smart about how we administer the OR Statewide Tests. We are not going to make students sit for hours at a time testing; we are going to offer them fun snacks, breaks when needed, and all the support we can give. We would like to take this opportunity to turn this challenge into a fun and meaningful experience.

• Connecting students with fine artists and scientists from our community

• Strengthening our fitness programs
• Enriching our media center and library
• Providing scholarships for students to participate in clubs, adventures, etc.

The opportunities to uplift our children’s educational journey are endless.

Bend Science Station for 4th Graders, Jan 13

Our 4th graders will be visiting Bend Science Station on Monday, January 13th from 9:15am to 11:45am for “Motoring with Magnets.” Permission slips are going home today and are available here.

Choice Options Lottery is Open

The Choice Options Lottery opened on January 2nd.  Visit this link for more information. If you know of any families that would be a good fit, send them our way! We will have two Info Nights: Monday, January 13th and Thursday, March 6th (Tour at 5:15, Info Session at 5:30).

Remember that all incoming siblings of Westside students MUST complete an application.  Current Westside Village students do not need to re-apply. 

Entry into the Choice Options lottery, Dual Immersion lottery, and Priority Area Change Requests all require a current enrollment in a Bend-La Pine School for the school year requested. Enrollment for the 2025-2026 is open.

2nd Six Week Celebration & Winter Solstice Performances 12/19, 4:30-6:00pm

Join us for our annual Winter Solstice Celebration! Connect with your teachers, other families, grab a bite to eat and see a quick performance. We encourage families to attend to see what your students have been working on! It will be at WVMS Thursday, December 19th from 4:30-6:00pm.

Youth Truth Survey

We will be asking your child to participate in the YouthTruth Student Survey in January. The YouthTruth Student Survey is a nationally recognized survey used in hundreds of schools and districts across the country, surveying hundreds of thousands of students. The confidential survey asks students about their experiences in the school and with their teachers, including how engaged they are at school, the rigor of their coursework, and their preparedness for the future. Our school, other schools, and researchers may use such information for developing plans to help schools and teachers improve. For information about this survey, please visit https://youthtruth.org, or speak to a school administrator.

Although we want to hear from all students, participation in this survey is voluntary. Please be aware that under federal law, you have the right to review a copy of the questions asked of your child. If you would like to do so, you can view a copy of the survey at school. You can opt your student out by filling out this form.
