ACR Priority Consideration Deadline Jan 26th

When an ACR is granted, student transportation to and from school is the responsibility of the parents/guardians. Visit this link for more information.

Youth Truth Survey

The Youth Truth Survey is a district-wide survey that we ask students, families, and staff to complete so that we can better our schools. Our Bend LaPine District and schools use the information from the survey to plan for school improvement.

Families, please take the time to complete the survey by Friday, January 26th: ytsurvey.org/bendfamily24. For more info: Youth Truth Family Survey Letter.

To opt-out your student or read more about the Student Youth Truth Survey: Family Opt-Out & Information Notice.

Student Health & Safety Programs

My Future-My Choice
Westside Village Magnet School will be delivering the My Future-My Choice curriculum in the 6th & 7th grades to meet Oregon’s health education requirements. For more information and to opt-out your student: My Future-My Choice Notification Letter.

Erin’s Law/Barbara Sinatra’s Fight Child Abuse K-5
Oregon State Bill 856 is legislation requiring public schools to educate students about safe/unsafe touch and secrets that are not okay to keep. We will begin teaching the Barbara Sinatra’s Fight Child Abuse sexual abuse prevention program to all Kindergarten through 5th grade students in April, which is Child Abuse Prevention Month. This program is a personal safety and self-advocacy program that empowers children to feel good about themselves, recognize uncomfortable situations, and report inappropriate acts to trusted adults in their lives. Though the program does cover “stranger safety,” it also empowers students to use assertiveness skills with people of all ages, especially individuals they know.

All Bend-LaPine Kindergarten through 5th grade students receive this curriculum. Should you prefer that your child not participate in these lessons, please let your student’s facilitators know and we will make arrangements to offer an alternative learning activity. For more information about the program: Erin’s Law K-5 Family Letter.

Rotunda Doors Open at 8:35am

It came to our attention recently that our door signs are incorrect. Our front rotunda doors open at 8:35am each morning, but our signs still had last year’s time of 8:30am listed. We apologize for this confusion.

2023-24 Oregon Statewide Tests (OSAS)

This school year our 3rd through 8th grade students will take the Oregon Statewide Tests. Parents have the right to opt their child out of the English Language Arts and/or the Math tests. We have made it a mission to be creative and smart about how we administer the OR Statewide Tests. We are not going to make students sit for hours at a time testing; we are going to offer them fun snacks, breaks when needed, and all the support we can give. We would like to take this opportunity to turn this challenge into a fun and meaningful experience.

Here are links to the Annual Notice for Statewide Testing – this contains information about the testing and the Opt-Out Form.

If you have any questions about the test, please email Felicia at: [email protected].

Naglieri Test

Every year, the Bend La Pine School District administers the Naglieri Test to all 2nd grade students as well as 3rd – 5th grade students new to the district. The Naglieri Nonverbal Test of Ability is a brief, nonverbal measure of general ability. We will be testing our students this Spring.

“Listen to the Children” Speaker, Jan 20th

WVMS is hosting a community event put on by Bloom Children’s Center (and former Westside parent). Tickets are available for purchase here.

Meeting needs and empowering children by creating an emotionally healthy environment are at the forefront of Denita’s message. Attendees will leave INSPIRED, REJUVENATED and EXCITED for Monday, with information they will easily apply and empowerment they will share with children.

Free Breakfast and Lunch Starting January 2nd

Very exciting news! Westside Village has qualified to be a CEP (Community Eligibility Provision) school which means that ALL of our students will get free lunch and breakfast starting January 2! Our eligibility in this program will last for 4 years. You can learn more about what it means to be a CEP school here.

Please note that students that would like a 2nd lunch or 2nd milk, etc, must pay for those items. Please make sure your student has money in their account to cover these items. If they do not have money available to cover it, they will not be allowed to receive those items. Thank you for your understanding.

Friendly Reminder About Pickup

The end of the school day at Westside Village is an important time for fitness and community. Therefore, we ask that between 3:00 and 3:35, students not be picked up from school unless there is an emergency.  If your student leaves early for a regular sports practice or activity, please arrange to pick them up at or before 3:00. This will decrease the burden on our staff at the end of the day. Thank you for your understanding in this matter.

Last Minute Field Trip Thurs, 11/9!

We have gotten approval to take a field trip on Thursday! We will be taking Centers, Youngers and Olders (K-5) to Skyliner Lodge to explore our own watershed; locating where our water comes from. We will use the forest as a vehicle to learn more about what a healthy watershed looks like.

We will hike, play a forest game, and write about our experience using our senses. Olders will practice leadership skills in leading their groups.

Permission slips will come home today. We are asking for a $2 donation to help with transportation costs.

We would love to have volunteers (must have approved background check) join us to help pass out snacks, walk with students, and run errands.

Curriculum & Fun

What a Fall we’ve had; lots of peak moments for students! Thank you families for supporting our fun, adventures, and learning.

Pumpkin Patch & Fun Run:

Inventerprise: We are excited to continue to work on our inventerprise project which is all about inventing something to help maintain life’s most precious resource, water! This has been challenging for students to come up with an idea that is novel and original. We can’t wait to learn more about individual and group ideas! Students will be sharing their ideas in a variety of ways including infographics, 3 minute videos, stop motion, posters, and models.

Winter Bazaar: As we get closer to the date of our Winter Bazaar we are working hard to craft business plans and finalize the goods we will be selling. Students are challenged to learn how to write a business plan for either a school product or their own product. Students will also apply algebra and number sense to help solve real world problems related to the Bazaar. It is so much fun to get into the entrepreneurial spirit and learn fabulous life skills of what it takes to design a business.

Reserve your professional table for the Winter Bazaar Saturday, December 2, 2023! Adult professional space is $30 and student professional spaces are $15. This event is sponsored by Friends of Westside Village, our nonprofit organization.  This event is a creative and sustainable Gift Market for children, professional artists and craftspeople to sell and promote their products and connect with the community. All students have school opportunities to create crafts and baked goods.

Dental Screening 11/8, 11/9

Walking Field Trip Permission Slip

Harvest Celebration

It is almost time for our harvest celebration which takes place during school on Tuesday, October 31. This is always a very fun day filled with costumes, sweet treats and of course a fun run! Students will rotate through many fun and festive activities including face painting, crafting, coding, cooking and more.

A few things to note about the harvest celebration:
– Students are welcome to dress in costumes and need to be appropriate for all. Please no scary, gory or cultural appropriation.
– Please do not send small pieces as they inevitably get lost throughout the business of the day.
– All students will participate in a costume fun run, please send your student with comfortable shoes.

-We encourage upcycled and homemade costumes.
