We encourage families to attend to see what your students have been working on and to connect with other families. It will be at WVMS Tuesday, December 12th from 4:30-6:30pm.
We’d love to have a meeting open to families. The topics will be how families can support our Winter Solstice Party and our trip the High Desert Museum. We will also open up the discussion for topics families may have and ideas of how to keep your students learning over the long holiday. Stop in for a cup of coffee and a treat!
The Choice Options Lottery opens on January 2nd. Visit this link for more information. If you know of any families that would be a good fit, send them our way! We will be hosting tours and info nights in January and March. Dates and times will be posted here as well as on our school website.
Remember that all incoming siblings of Westside students MUST complete an application. Current Westside Village students do not need to re-apply.
New This Year: Entry into the Choice Options lottery, Dual Immersion lottery, and Priority Area Change Requests all require a current enrollment in a Bend-La Pine School for the school year requested. Enrollment for the 2024-2025 school year opens on January 2.

We’d like to kick off our new year with a trip to the High Desert Museum! We will take our entire Village to the museum! It is important to get permission slips signed and returned BEFORE winter break. Permission slips went home Friday. Find it here if you haven’t seen it yet: Centers/Elders Youngers/Olders Cost is $8 or what you can afford. You can pay with cash or check in the office or with the Friends Paypal Link.
If your student will not be here on that day, please let us know.
If you’d like to volunteer, please indicate that on the permission slip. Remember that all volunteers MUST be approved through the district prior to the trip. Visit this page if you are interested in becoming a volunteer. Applications usually take about a week to process, but could take longer over the holidays.
Please, please come take a look! We want you to have your things back! Any items that are not claimed by 4:00pm on December 15th will be donated. Lost and Found is located in the front office lobby.
Session 3 Clubs are open- sign up here! You can also sign up for December and January Before/After Care on this link. Clubs will run from December 11th-February 1st. There are options Monday-Friday! Before School care starts at 7:30am Monday-Friday.
We are getting a New Freezer for the mini kitchen and we would love it if someone could help us pick it up from Costco and deliver it to school. Marcie will coordinate with you to make sure payment is covered for the freezer. Contact the office or Ms. Alice (415) 516-5074 if you are able to help us. Thank you!

Hello Westside Village Families!

Dec 15 Winter Solstice Party (during the school day)

The winter bazaar is this Saturday December 2 from 9:30am-3:00pm. Students are working hard this week to finalize their own personal projects or collaborating with facilitators to create school projects. There are plenty of opportunities for all students to contribute to this epic event. Talk to your student about their business plan! They are learning about income vs expenses, coming up with an appropriate price to sell their goods, and ramping up for production. On that note, we welcome students to bring their home projects to school to work on them during the day if they have one.
Permission slip link here: Winter Bazaar Permission Slip
Thank you to Taran, Nikhil, Neve, and Coral for advertising the Bazaar on KPOV! Great job!

Other students are working on school projects baking, pinecone art, magnets, bird feeders, birdhouses, and such. Students are working on business plans for WVMS concession booth and the arts and crafts tables..
Every year WVMS students choose a nonprofit organization that will receive a portion of our proceeds from the money we make from our school projects. This year, in honor of our theme, “Precious Water, Precious Winter,” we have decided to donate to the Upper Deschutes Watershed Council. The Upper Deschutes Watershed Council works to protect and restore the 2,000,000-acre upper Deschutes River watershed through collaborative projects in watershed restoration, monitoring and community awareness. They take a grass-roots approach to involve stakeholders, including landowners, ranchers, environmental interests, local citizens, and representatives from local government and agencies.
Did you miss picture day or want to take a new picture? Dorian will be back at our school on Monday, December 4th for picture retakes. Click here for ordering information.
There are still ornaments on the Giving Tree if you would like to help a family this holiday season! Just let the office know which ornament you took, purchase the item(s) and return them unwrapped by Tuesday, December 12th.
Brrr!! It’s getting chilly out there! Students spend a lot of time outside throughout the day. Please make sure your child is dressed appropriately for the weather! It’s time to start bringing hats, coats and mittens. It is helpful to put names on everything and teach your students that they can store their hats and mittens in the sleeves of their coats when they’re not wearing them.
Please come in and check the Lost and Found! We will be donating any unclaimed items over Winter Break.
We could use some help preparing some of our math curriculum, and you can do it from home! If there is anyone that could volunteer from home to cut out math diagrams/puzzles, please let us know and we can get you set up. Thank you!
We have all we need! Thanks to everyone that donated, wow!
Get ready to join the festivities at the Winter Bazaar Saturday, Dec 2

Students are excited about working at the bazaar, selling their own goods and/or helping our school with community projects. All students are learning how to develop a business plan in math. This requires a lot of higher level thinking and skill application.
Many students will be bringing home permission slips to either sell their own product or help sell school concessions and products. If your child does not bring home a slip, encourage them to participate. Also, all students will have an opportunity to participate in getting ready for the bazaar.
If students are working on their own product, Thanksgiving break is a great time to encourage your students to work on their projects.
We need parent volunteers!
This event takes a lot of coordination to get off the ground and we would love some help from our generous community on Friday afternoon before the event and throughout the day on Saturday, December 2. Scan the code to check out what we need most help with. As always, you can also reach out to Ms. Alice directly at 415-516-5074.

We had a lot of fun on our field trip to Tumalo creek with the Centers, Youngers and Olders! We did team building exercises, wrote in our journals, and went for a hike to learn about the forest and study the watershed. Kids also did a stream study where they examined the ecosystem surrounding Tumalo creek. They assessed characteristics of the area including flow rate, depth and sediment as well as surrounding land features like trees, shrubs and creatures. We reflected on the intricate balance of aquatic ecosystems and the greater impact of various environmental factors.
Sending a huge thank you to all parents that were able to attend — Amanda Menser, Caroline Poole, Emily Koleno, Dylan Redmon, and Vanessa Hill!
We are looking forward to the next opportunity to study our water sources this Friday, November 17! This time we will take groups to a different stretch of Tumalo Creek as well as the Deschutes. Please look out for a permission slip this week. Are you interested in volunteering on our trip? Let us know.

Sending a giant Westside Village thank you to Josh Floyd at Yes! Tree Care for taking care of our precious apple trees. Need help with trees on your property? They take care of pruning, removal, creating defensible space, emergency care, wellness and more. https://yestreecare.com/
Thursday, November 16th we will be serving “Thanksgiving Dinner” at school at lunch time. Families are invited to join their students for lunch. Please bring your ID to sign in and arrive at 12:00 to allow time to sign in. Please RSVP asap if you have not already. Price is $4.75 for adults and $3.50 for students or siblings. Cash and check accepted (no cards), or you can charge the amount to your child’s meal account. Please note that we are not able to extend the Free/Reduced status to adults or siblings eating with those students.
We are looking for old maps, or atlases specifically on non-glossy paper. We are doing an art project the week we get back from thanksgiving break and would love donations if you have them. Drop them off at the office if you can.

Every holiday season the WVMS Community sets up a Giving Tree to help out and spread joy to our families that need some extra support and help during the holiday season. This year the WVMS Giving Tree is located in the office lobby at school. This is an awesome opportunity to show some WVMS families some love this holiday season. The Giving Tree has “holiday wishes” on the “ornaments” to be filled. The Giving Tree is updated frequently as we receive & fulfill holiday wishes.
To participate: simply pick an ornament with a wish from the Giving Tree, let office staff know which wish you would like (they are numbered), fulfill the wish, and return the unwrapped wish items to the office (with the wish ornament attached or wish number clearly marked on the item/s) no later than Tuesday, December 12th. If you are unable to come to school, just give us a call and we will pick a wish for you.
If you are interested in having your family be a recipient of our giving tree and have their wishes put on the tree – please email [email protected] or [email protected] or call the office at 541-355-2000 ASAP.
Please know that the WVMS community is amazing! Our community members are all about helping out other community members. If you need some help during the holiday season, please accept this invitation. The Giving Tree is anonymous & gives folks great joy in knowing they can make the holidays a little lighter and more magical for other folks in our special community.
Westside Village believes that parent involvement and engagement in a child’s education can lead to higher student academic achievement and better social emotional outcomes. Our goal is to lead families to be empowered in their child’s educational journey. Read our plan here.

We have gotten approval to take a field trip on Thursday! We will be taking Centers, Youngers and Olders (K-5) to Skyliner Lodge to explore our own watershed; locating where our water comes from. We will use the forest as a vehicle to learn more about what a healthy watershed looks like.
We will hike, play a forest game, and write about our experience using our senses. Olders will practice leadership skills in leading their groups.
Permission slips will come home today. We are asking for a $2 donation to help with transportation costs.
We would love to have volunteers (must have approved background check) join us to help pass out snacks, walk with students, and run errands.
What a Fall we’ve had; lots of peak moments for students! Thank you families for supporting our fun, adventures, and learning.
Pumpkin Patch & Fun Run:

Inventerprise: We are excited to continue to work on our inventerprise project which is all about inventing something to help maintain life’s most precious resource, water! This has been challenging for students to come up with an idea that is novel and original. We can’t wait to learn more about individual and group ideas! Students will be sharing their ideas in a variety of ways including infographics, 3 minute videos, stop motion, posters, and models.
Winter Bazaar: As we get closer to the date of our Winter Bazaar we are working hard to craft business plans and finalize the goods we will be selling. Students are challenged to learn how to write a business plan for either a school product or their own product. Students will also apply algebra and number sense to help solve real world problems related to the Bazaar. It is so much fun to get into the entrepreneurial spirit and learn fabulous life skills of what it takes to design a business.
Reserve your professional table for the Winter Bazaar Saturday, December 2, 2023! Adult professional space is $30 and student professional spaces are $15. This event is sponsored by Friends of Westside Village, our nonprofit organization. This event is a creative and sustainable Gift Market for children, professional artists and craftspeople to sell and promote their products and connect with the community. All students have school opportunities to create crafts and baked goods.
