Important Information

Attendance – There is a new C19 attendance code. Here are two documents that will help explain this code and point you to see when a student is expected back to school after a C19 absence. The C19 attendance code does NOT necessarily mean a student has COVID, it just means they may have COVID related symptoms.

State Testing Update – Many of you may have heard narratives in the news that the US Dept. of Education is requiring state tests this spring or that they are not approving any waivers to state testing. None of that is quite correct. Here are a few thing we do know–

  • Oregon has submitted a waiver from testing this year
  • ODE has not heard whether the waiver has been approved, and they will be working directly with USDOE in the coming weeks on the waiver and testing requirements
  • We do not know definitively if or when state testing will be required
  • If testing is required, ELA and Mathematics tests will be substantially shortened from previous years
  • If testing is required, it will be completely decoupled from accountability
  • Oregon’s test window will not open prior to April 13

Instructional Practices

Here is this week’s secondary instructional blog, The Why of “WHY”

The focus of the blog this week is about learning intentions.  This is the first part of a series of blog posts about the instructional practice of Learning Intentions and Success Criteria. Specifically, the post speaks to the importance and power of explaining why students are being taught what they are being taught. When students are explicitly taught the application of the teaching point engagement increases.

Supporting Secondary Instruction

Advisory

IPSI

Stace will post new IPSI lists on the commons windows at student services Monday morning. Teachers will have access to these lists so they can tell their first period students (Monday & Tuesday) where to go for IPSI.

Goals for IPSI:

  1. To ensure that every bus rider, or student without a ride until 3:45, has a targeted placement in IPSI #1 and #2 so they have a safe place to be at school and the instructional support is purposeful. For Safety
  2. To offer targeted instructional support for students who are credit deficient due to CDL or those who need added support in subjects during hybrid. For Success
  3. To offer targeted instructional support for any student at LPHS who wishes to supplement their learning. For Supplement

Giving back!

Our Life Skills staff & students have been giving back to the Community.
Due to COVID they have had to change their classroom program. Since they are no longer able to transport students in vehicles to go out on work crews, they have had to get creative. What better than giving back to our community? Our students have been walking off campus to help clean up and clear around local businesses. They have been working hard out in the elements!

Mental Health / SEL

Stress, Trauma, and the Brain – Episode 1: Over the next several weeks, we will be highlighting Dr. Bruce Perry’s work, The Neurosequential Model in Education.  Dr. Perry’s work is based on an understanding of the structure and sequential nature of the brain, which can help educators increase their students’ engagement in learning and mitigate behavioral problems. Listen as Dr. Perry describes the model and its significant impact on how we interact with our students, our own children, and each other.  The video is 7-minutes long and will change how you think about your students.

Canvas

Having issues with Grade Passback in Semester 2? If you are finding that it is taking a long time please think about doing these steps!

  1. Go to Assignments
  2. Filter to Semester 1 Assignments in the Upper Left
  3. Unclick the Green Synch Button for ALL of Semester 1 Assignments

This will take about 5 minutes total, but will save you time in the long run as your synchs speed up!

If you have issues with Canvas in Semester 2, don’t forget to reach out to your Canvas Support Person! We have workarounds and things that may help!

*** Aim to Synch your grades from Canvas to Synergy once a week! This will keep Synergy Up to Date and will limit Synch issues in the future!

Safety

Athletics / Activities

From our AD, Aaron Flack . . .

HERE is our sporting events this week.  As you can see, we have a home event every day this week.  Due to limitations required by our County Metrics and Contact Tracing Purposes, I must know everyone that will be in attendance.  We will have our essential workers, players, coaches, and officials in attendance.  If there are any other people, for example yearbook, I will need to know.  For volleyball games, we will not be able to have teams that are practicing come in and watch.  We are limited to 50 people total in the big gym.  Remember, all the games will be Live streamed on NFHS for free this year.
