5/13-5/17 Weekly Update

“It’s not uncommon for students to graduate from high school believing that every math problem can be solved in 30 seconds or less. And if they don’t know the answer, they’re just not a math person. This is a failure of education.”

Dan Finkel, quoted in “Why Normalizing Struggle Can Create a Better Math

Experience for Kids” by Ki Sung in MindShift, May 1, 2019, https://bit.ly/2LlQ7h4

SBAC 2019

Great first week of testing (and rehearsals, and science station, and marching for students, and teacher appreciation week, and field trips, and…you get the picture!!)  Thank you for your thought, time, flexibility and energy making it happen. For the rest of the school; please continue to minimize noise in the hallways, especially during the morning for another week as we move into the math testing.

Child Youth Resilience Measure (CYRM)

On Monday, May 20th we will be administering the Child and Youth Resilience Survey with support from Better Together. This survey is part of the regional Culture of Care Initiative that the Bend-La Pine School District is participating. The survey asks about positive things in the lives of our students and is an opportunity to learn more about how we can foster the best environment for kids to learn and thrive. The survey will take approximately 30 minutes per classroom. I appreciate your support in helping us complete this.

The survey administration varies by grade level. You can access the Child Youth Resilience Measure (CYRM) Guide here; there is a page per survey version: Kindergarten, 1st-2nd Grade, 3rd-4th Grade, 5th Grade, 6-8th Grade, and 9th-12 Grade.

This is a summary of how survey administration will occur for elementary school classrooms:

Kindergarten:

A team of 4-5 data collection volunteers will come to your classroom as scheduled. Please instruct the volunteers to conduct interviews in the classroom or in the hallway. Volunteers will then pull students one by one to complete the survey. Please let students know that someone will be asking them questions about the good things happening in their lives. Volunteers will attempt to cause the least amount of disruption possible.

1st-grade classrooms will complete a paper survey.

At your scheduled survey time, a small team of data collection volunteers will come to your classroom with the survey materials. You may administer the survey as a whole class or in small groups. Volunteers can sit with students who need extra help, or with a small group of students. The volunteers will look to you to lead the administration of the survey for your classroom, they are there available to provide extra assistance as needed.

2nd-5th-grade classrooms will complete a digital survey.

Please set aside 30 minutes during the school day for students to complete the survey. Students will use their iPads to select a QR code to access the survey. Please post or project the QR code for students to access when you are ready to administer the survey. Please read the questions aloud to the group. If students have questions, please help
