April 2

Thank you- Thanks to Kevin G. and Dave and James for all of their work moving furniture around and making sure everyone has the desks, tables and chairs they need to start on Monday. It is/was a massive undertaking and they made it look easy and smooth.

Thanks x 2- By the time we start back on Monday, that two week closure has turned into 389 days since we have had all of our students here at one time. It’s been a long journey. Thank you for all you’ve done to help students and families make the best of the past year +. I’m thrilled that all of our students will all be here and we can get back to doing what we do best.

Bend Science Station-  Bend Science Station has put together some awesome science lessons for each grade level that have detailed directions, videos, and materials and complement our Amplify program.  The goal was to provide teachers with lessons that will require very little preparation that kids will enjoy. These materials have been delivered to us and we are awaiting a one pager with directions for use. As soon as we get the directions, we’ll share the materials with you. Right now- do nothing. Just wanted you to know that it will be coming.

Fire/Earthquake Drill- This is scheduled for Monday at 10 AM. I’ve always had to make adjustments to things, but this year has taken adjustments to unprecedented levels. At the time I created drill schedule, third edition, we didn’t know that I scheduled something for the first day of our return to all in instruction. So, with that in mind, let’s change the Monday drill to Thursday. Also, it’s hard to find a time that doesn’t conflict with a transition, recess, lunch, etc. So we are going to go at 9:55 as it’s easier for fifth grade teachers to gather their class from recess than first grade. So, when we are finished, those with a 10:00 recess will stay out. Hope that doesn’t muddy the waters too much. Let me know if you have questions.

Conferences- As we embark on a month of conferences, I think it’s important to remember our audience. We are talking with parents about the one thing that matters most to them- their kids. Remember to learn from them about their kids as well as sharing what you know. It’s important that we model a partnership. Also remember that they don’t always have the same understanding of school and the education system as we do. The clip below sheds a little light on how some parents might view some things going on here at school.

Upcoming Events

April 5 – 2:45 – Safety Team Meeting

April 5 – 2:45 – STEM Team Meeting

April 6 – 2:45 – ICCL Meeting

April 7 – 1:00-2:00 – Kindergarten EBISS

April 6 – 9:55 – Earthquake/ Fire Drill

April 16 – No School- Day off

That’s all for this week. Thanks for all of the work you’ve all done to get things ready for ALL OF OUR STUDENTS on Monday! Get some rest this weekend and let’s be ready to start the homestretch!

March 30

What’s Happening?!- We are going all in beginning Monday, April 5. K-5 students will all be here M-F during our regularly scheduled school hours. This obviously has significant logistical impacts for us. Below is my best attempt to summarize these for you given the information that I have available. As is the standard for the last 13 months, EVERYTHING IS SUBJECT TO CHANGE AT THE WHIM OF OFFICIALS IN SALEM. Stay tuned.

Calendar/Conferences- There is a lot up in the air re: conferences. I should be getting more information within the next day or two. We do know

  • There will be NO SCHOOL this Thursday, April 1 and Friday, April 2.
  • There will be NO WINN SCHOOL for 4th and 5th graders this Wednesday, March 30. K-3 will have an SIW schedule this Wednesday.
  • More info to come. Sorry as things are moving…

Schedule- With the return of all 4th and 5th graders, our current specials schedule will not work. We are working to get it revised with as little impact to your daily routine as possible. Please know that there are must do’s and may do’s. We will be sure to address all of the must do’s and then do our best to keep the positives of the schedule. We will share it as soon as it is complete. As always, I’m open (understanding the short turn around time) to revisions as long as ALL those impacted give your revision a thumbs up.

Desks/Tables- We will be switching out some primary desks for tables. We will then move the desks to the 4th and 5th grade rooms so that they have enough desks for all students. We will be doing the moving of tables/desks on Thursday and Friday of this week.

Staffing- We received our staffing allocations for next year. My job in the very near future is to submit a staffing plan based on those allocations. That sometimes means we may have to do some rearranging, moving, etc. within staff.  So, I would like your help. Please take some time in the next week or so (April 7 deadline… if you turn it in the 8th or 9th, I’ll still look at it) to complete a staff interest sheet. It wasn’t formatting correctly in my google docs, so I’ll email a copy to you soon. I have always used a similar version of these to help with staffing especially when changes are necessary. Thank you for taking the time to complete it. And, as I said before, if you want to chat about staffing and what that means for you next year, please don’t hesitate to find me and we’ll set up a time to talk.

Conferences- Your parent input forms for conference times should have already been sent to parents. Please see our conference guidance for information on our process. Please be sure to complete the google doc schedule for your class. Let me know if you have any questions.

Retention- With the events of the last year and conferences coming up soon, I anticipate a heightened interest from parents regarding retention. PLEASE DO NOT BRING UP RETENTION ABOUT ANY STUDENT DURING CONFERENCES.

  • We have heard more than the typical interest in retention for the next school year.
  • Retention will be handled the same way as in past years.
  • Teachers should not bring up the topic of retention at conferences.
  • If a parent brings up retention, the teacher should listen to their concern and let them know they will talk with the principal.
  • If a parent is seriously interested in retention, they can initiate the process by completing this form.

Let me know if you have any questions about this… I’m always willing to listen to special cases.

Summer School Interest-Please complete this summer school survey if it is something you are interested in doing.

Dream Box/Lexia- How’s the dream box and lexia going? Just a reminder to help students to continue to participate and access these programs. These are both effective and powerful tools in student learning and in helping us to provide appropriate supports for our students. In addition, Laci and I set our SLGG’s on dream box and lexia participation so if you don’t want Skip over here lecturing us then help us out!

Template Training- ICCL’s are working to schedule a training for template in the near future. This training will be for our ICCL team so that they can support all staff as well as provide PD for new staff and any other who want it. The training is not limited to ICCL’s and any staff who want to participate are welcome to do so. I will share date/time/place when it is scheduled.

Spring Break Sustainability- The district has sent us spring break sustainability guidelines so that we know procedures and protocols for utilities, etc. over spring break. Thanks to Claire for beating me to the punch and providing you info yesterday!

That’s all for today and this week! Thanks for all you are doing for the students of Buckingham! I hope that you have a fantastic and restful spring break. Do your best to get out of here as soon after the buses as possible. See you on March 29.

Upcoming Events

Staffing- Hard to believe, but we are starting to think about next year. Sometime in the next couple of weeks principals will receive their staffing allocations for next year. They will then develop a staffing plan to determine if/where there are openings. We don’t have any details right now, but if you have any questions or wonderings about the process, don’t hesitate to stop in and chat. Staffing can always be a bit of a stressful time for folks and if I can do anything to help lessen that, let me know.

PBIS Thanks- Thank you to Laci, Deborah, Miriam and Kimberly for helping to lead our PBIS PD on Wednesday. Once again, never feel bad about taking the time to teach, reteach and review our safe, respectful, responsible and kind rules matrix. Students who know what to do will do well and they will know what to do if we teach them! Let us know if you would like assistance on a student who is providing you with an opportunity for growth. Thank you for all you are doing. You are doing a great job and it is showing.

TAG Testing- I will soon be figuring out how to administer the Naglieri TAG screener that our district uses. Since we were unable to administer this test last year, we will do all second and third graders and any fourth or fifth graders who are new to Bend La Pine. More info to come as I learn the system!

State Testing- No word on if/when we will be doing SBAC testing this year. The state of Oregon had originally said we would not be administering SBAC this spring. The Federal Dept. of Education has said states will still be required to administer. So, we are the proverbial end of the tail and will do what we need to do. I’ll keep you informed as I learn more.

Staff Info Sheet- Thanks to those of you who submitted your staff info sheet and thanks to Becky for the great hallway bulletin board. Fun to read. You can still submit if you want to! Deadline is June 17. 😁

Gonna stop here for the week. I’m sure there is some stuff I’m leaving off, but hopefully you can get a short set of notes read early and not think about them again this weekend. The Saturday forecast is 61 degrees and sunny! Hope you can get outside, enjoy some sunshine and rejuvenate for the last week before spring break. Have a great weekend!

Bronco Buck Classroom Book Award Winners- New spreadsheet for you to put your winners. Thanks.

Picture Day Schedule- Pictures will be taken Monday and Tuesday of next week. The linked schedule is edition XIXIMC. Let us know if there is an issue.

4th and 5th Grade Wednesday- Laci came up with a nice spreadsheet for you to put names of students you are nominating to come in for three hours on Wednesdays. There is a small scoring guide/rubric that allows you to mark the reasons (lack of work, SEL issues, not attending webex, ELL, sped, 504). You can score students in each area from 1-3. If a student is ELL, IEP, 504, they get an automatic 3 in that column. Don’t spend a ton of time doing this. It’s a guide and hopefully will help us if there is a question or a difficult decision. Sped, Title, ELL and Admin will have access to review in order to make these selections team decisions so it’s not all on teachers. We will make phone calls beginning on Tuesday (that gives us over a week).

Title Groups- We have moved two Title groups to room C-1 to try and help teachers nad students have a calmer and quieter learning environment. Ms. Desiree and Mrs. DuValle will be working from C-1. If your students have a reading group with Ms. Desiree or Mrs. DuValle, direct them to C-1. Thanks!

Lockdown- Well done on the lockdown. The vast majority of classrooms were locked, dark and quiet. A couple reminders:

  • Lock your door. 🙂 Only one unlocked.
  • If you use a magnet, be sure to move it off the latch. Even a locked door doesn’t keep someone out if it’s not latched.
  • You and your students should be in a place that is as out of view as possible.

Please review the lockdown procedures if you haven’t already had a chance.

PTA Pie Pick Up- PTA Pie Pick up will be next Thursday after school in the bus loop. PTA has it under control, but wanted to let you know the plan.

Rock out to a Good Book- If you think you know your music and want to win a prize that is probably not worth the effort (although the fame you get from winning will be fun for a while), then turn in your entries to me by Tuesday morning.

Song title, band name- bonus points for album title (all songs will be from a time that albums were a thing), and year the song was released. Tiebreaker is to include the information for song number 3 from yesterday. Tiebreaker tiebreaker will be how creatively you submit your answers. An email with your answers- not very creative. Including album art, or a diarama of the artist in concert- very creative. I’m going obscurer (that is a word) than yesterday, but not so obscure that you shouldn’t know if you spent any time sitting (without a seat belt) in the backseat of a 1972 white Volkswagen van listening to cassette tapes in the player mounted in the glove box.

Upcoming Events

March 8- Picture day for kinder, first, 4th and 5th

March 9- Picture day for 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th

March 10- SIW- PBIS

March 10- EBISS 3rd Grade

March 17- SIW- Teacher Choice

February 26

Nurse Thanks- Despite the mountains of extra things we are all doing to navigate new safety expectations due to covid, all in all it is going better than I expected. This efficient process all collapses without the behind the scenes, minute by minute, monitoring and follow up of our nurse, Sarah. I know you all get the emails about one of your students being out for a while or being able to return on a certain date. What you don’t get is the emails for all the other students in the other 20 classes. I do get those and they are numerous. The amount of work, information gathering, communication and thinking that goes into every one of those emails is monumental… and Sarah does it all at two schools- Buckingham and Ponderosa. Thank you to Sarah for carrying so much of the weight of this on her shoulders allowing the rest of us to continue on as close to normal as possible.

Fire Drill- Fire drill went great.  Quick, organized, efficient. Well done. Thank you.

Read Across America- Consulted with ICCL’s about Read Across America and we’re going simple this year. Two days keeps it from being all consuming while ensuring that all the fourth and fifth graders get a chance to participate. Let me know if you have any questions.  I put something in this week’s newsletter. Spread the word to your kids as well.

Flag Salute- I mentioned in a previous blog that we are required to give each student a weekly opportunity to say the pledge. It seems to still be a bit of a challenge, so someone suggested that I kick off one day a week with a morning announcement and initiate the pledge. ICCL’s agreed that it would be a good idea (I think they might have even demanded that I do it…🤷🏻‍♂️). So, I’ll start off Monday morning. I usually get in from morning duty around 7:50ish, so it will take place during breakfast before anyone goes to a special.

PBIS Info- Your friendly, neighborhood PBIS team, with the help of Laci and Heather F., have put together a  1 (+) page outline/ guide to Buckinham’s PBIS plan. It includes what we all do for CORE and what steps need to happen to go from Tier 1 to 2 to 3. While PBIS language uses terms like decision ‘rules’, I prefer to call these guidelines. There are always exceptions to the rules and this outline will hopefully help everyone have a similar understanding of our processes. I am a bit uncomfortable sending this out right now because I think it needs A LOT of explanation and potentially clarification, but I didn’t want to wait another week until our staff meeting.

Some Highlights until we have a chance to review in a meeting:

  • Oops slip google doc will continue- You can do paper copy instead and send to Laci or me to follow up.
  • Oops slips are primarily for data collection and will help us when planning interventions
  • We are working on getting some PD on Pawsitive Choices for K-2 who have not had that
  • Stop, walk and talk is a strategy we would like you to review with your class as we really want students to apply this before running to an adult to handle minor situations that students should be able to solve themselves- posters for this are copied (Thanks Deborah!) and in the work room.
  • The CORE (matrix, problem solving instruction, bronco bucks @3-5:1 to oops slips, oops slips) is essential and foundational to successful plan at our school. Tiered interventions will become too numerous to manage and will fail if we do not do a great job of implementing/ teaching our CORE to our students. This starts with classroom teachers and is followed up and reinforced by all staff. Classroom teachers please do make concerted effort to teach, reteach and reinforce our expectations. What I’ve seen so far is great. We’re also starting to see the novelty of back to school wear off and students beginning to make less than stellar choices. We just need to keep on this. PBIS is no different than reading. If we don’t do a great job with the CORE, then we will have too many students needing intervention for our interventions to be successful and the system will fail. With effective CORE in PBIS, the vast majority of our students will be successful the vast majority of the time and we will be able to provide the attention needed for our struggling students to build the lagging skills they need.

Thank you for your attention to this. More info from PBIS team to come.

SIW- Your ICCL team has set SIW dates for the rest of the year.

March 10- PBIS information

April 21- STEM

May 19- Assessment (writing focus)

As you can see, the focus of the three remaining SIW PD’s will be on our priority areas.  Wednesdays not listed above from 2:00-3:30 (the SIW time) are teacher choice. Plan on 3/10, 4/21 and 5/19 to be PD on the above topics.

Subs??- We’ve obtained video footage of the subfinder office getting sub requests:

Thanks to everyone for picking up a little extra when all the sub jobs don’t get filled.

From ODE/ BLPS Ed. Center- We would like to share a new opportunity that ODE is offering called the Promising Practices Idea Exchange. We want to personally reach out to make sure you and your staff are aware of this opportunity for teachers to share stories and strategies for Comprehensive Distance Learning, hybrid and face-to-face teaching and learning success.

What is the Idea Exchange?

Educators from around the state have been asking us to figure out a way to share promising practices and strategies that are engaging our students in learning. Whether schools are teaching face-to-face, via hybrid or fully online in Comprehensive Distance Learning, the exchange of ideas is a way for teachers to collaborate with their peers, learn about and share new strategies, and inspire as well as be inspired.

Would you please share this flyer with your staff or contact lists that you think might benefit? The Promising Practices Idea Exchange begins on Wednesday, February 17 with a focus on Active Engagement During Synchronous or Asynchronous Learning, with additional bi-weekly sessions through March. You will find a description of the other topics that will be covered, dates and a registration link on the flyer.  And, this is free and open to all Oregon educators. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to send questions to Ken Greenbaum at [email protected] or Carla Wade at [email protected]

February 19, 2021

Congratulations- As Kevin announced earlier this year, Valerie Sims has retired and has been working back for us to date. Well, it’s with mixed emotions that I announce Valerie has decided that she is going to really retire and her last day with Buckingham will be Friday, March 19. It goes without saying that Valerie will be hard to replace. She has been at Buckingham a VERY long time and is part of the fabric of the school. Buckingham won’t be the same without Valerie, but we are happy that she is doing what she wants to do and making a decision that is best for her. I know I can speak for all when I say, “Thank you,” to Valerie for everything she has given to Buckingham students, staff and parents.

STEM Challenge- Don’t forget next week’s STEM challenge. Thanks to the STEM team for planning and prep.  Here is the All School STEM Challenge for February. We know everyone’s plates are very full and wanted to make this as easy as possible for staff. It is up to you how you would like to push the STEM Challenge out to students- it can be done in the classroom or independently at home. For the challenge there are 2 videos to watch (a read aloud and a video chat I had with my sister-in-law who is a biologist), then the kids get to design and build an animal’s winter home. They can do this using any supplies, so you shouldn’t need to provide or send anything home. The plan was to push or do this activity with students next Wednesday, February 24th. However, if this doesn’t work for you or your team, you can adjust as needed.

Thank you for your continued support with the STEM Challenges! We know the kids really enjoy them and it has been a fun way build community and get kids excited about STEM. If you have any questions please let me know!

blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah….- That was my imitation of my staff meeting yesterday. Sorry for so much sit and get. It is not best practice, but sometimes necessary. Thank you for being patient and understanding. I’m hopeful that we will have some future staff meetings where we are all together and it’s not me doing all the talking.

Picture Day-  Picture day will be March 8 and 9. We will be getting you new envelopes that remove the composite option and we will have online ordering information as well. On the 8th we will do Kinder, 1st, 4th and, 5th and on the 9th we will do 2nd, 3rd, and the other half of 4th and 5th. With the early start, we will do staff pictures on the first morning and we can do staff throughout the day as well.

Staff Info Sheet- There are lots of new faces at Buckingham this year, especially in the last month or so. Of all the years to add new staff, I can’t think of a tougher one to integrate everyone into our community. If you are so inclined, take a few minutes in the next couple weeks to share a little bit about yourself with the rest of the Buckingham family. This will help oldies get to know the newbies and the newbies get to know the oldies. Turn into Laci or me if/when you get it complete.

Conferences- As of this writing, conferences are a go on the scheduled dates of Wednesday, April 14 through Friday, April 16. Looks like we will do a 12 hour Wednesday, a 12 hour Thursday and have Friday off. If you would like to do some Friday time instead of the two long days, come and talk to me and we will do our best to figure something out for you. As of this writing, conferences will be virtual. More info re: scheduling, etc. to come.

The preceding message is subject to change abruptly and frequently before or after any decisions/ actions are taken on our part.

Drills- Gary’s ‘get me get off drill probation’ schedule.

Buckingham Alumni- It’s always nice to hear positive stories about kids that have gone through Buckingham. Alaric Hartsock is not only my college roommate’s son, he is a Buckingham alumni. Alaric’s Buckingham training is being put to good use as evidenced this article and by his recently earned internship at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, a leading center for scientific discovery in chemistry, data analytics, earth science, technological innovation, energy resiliency and national security (sounds kinda like STEM).  Awesome to see kids doing well. I know there are many stories highlighting the achievements of our former students and it’s great to take a minute and be proud of our students, current and former.

Well, I think that is it for now. Thanks for a great week. Enjoy your weekend!

Upcoming Events

February 23- Fire Drill- 10:00 AM (students with 10:05 recess will stay out for recess at the end of the drill- so start getting coats on early)

February 23- ICCL- 2:30 (ish)- Library

February 12, 2021

Congratulations!- Congratulations to Tami for the birth of her grandson earlier this week!! Future Bronco??

PLC Dates-  It was great to visit fifth grade’s PLC meeting on Wednesday and see conversation around the 4 questions. Focused, intentional conversation around standards, assessments and interventions has a powerful impact on student learning. Thanks to those grade levels that have given me their PLC dates/times. Please do so if you haven’t already. Thank you.

Meeting Schedule Meeting schedules are challenging due to so many moving pieces in normal years. I think now we have some things in place as a school and district and are able to pencil in some dates and times for meetings throughout the rest of the year. The meeting schedule is a live document and can change from time to time, but I will try to give as much notice as possible if that happens. I will also include meetings in my upcoming events and Becky will put on master calendar. Some of these are still TBD but coming soon (SIW, EBISS dates). Shout out to Jesse Andrews for inspiring the colors on the schedule.

Black History Month- As you know, February is Black History Month. While we know February should NOT be the only time we highlight black history, it is certainly an opportunity share the significant contributions of black Americans on our nation’s history. Towards that end, Bend La Pine Schools has posted a blog with appropriate books and videos for your use.

Inclement Weather- Inclement weather guidelines from HR

Pledge of Allegiance- According to ORS 339.875, we have requirements around the flag salute. Please be sure to provide students at least the required weekly opportunity to do the pledge. Thanks!!

Safe Touch- We will once again be conducting “Safe Touch” lessons with all classes this year to fulfill the requirements around Erin’s Law. Laci will be coming to classes to deliver this instruction. She will soon be getting trained and we will follow that up with communication about scheduling your classes to have Laci teach.

PBIS- A small team from PBIS met Wednesday to revise some of our behavior intervention procedures around oops slips, referrals, problem solving skills, and the like. We are close to having something to share with all staff very soon. In the meantime, thanks to Laci for digging up 50 Free reward ideas and Reward ideas lists for you to use as you see fit. There are some great ideas for you to spice things up with Bronco Bucks in your class.

EBISS- We are hopeful to start our first EBISS on 2/24. It will look different this year than it has in the past (what isn’t different this year?). We will soon provide everyone with a summary that will include our purpose, format, process, what to do to be prepared and schedule. Look for this in the next week or so.

Safety Info- You can find a hard copy of our safety checklist and a hard copy of a 103 page OSHA document (ONE HUNDRED AND THREE PAGES) from the state on our safety bulletin board in the hall between the office and workroom. I know there’s a comment in here somewhere, but I would probably get into trouble.

SLGG’s- Please submit your SLGG’s to me either electronically or hard copy by the end of the month. You are welcome to set SLGG’s as a grade level. I will have a short meeting with each of you to review your slgg’s. You don’t need to worry about scheduling that- it’s on me. If your grade does it together, I will try to meet with you all at once- probably stealing a few minutes from your PLC. Thank you!

Upcoming Events

February 14- Valentine’s Day

February 15- Presidents’ Day- No School

February 17- SIW- Teacher Choice

February 18- Staff Meeting- 2:45- Gary’s Webex

February 23- ICCL- 2:45 site TBD

Self care has been a bit of a theme for us this year. Although our focus has peaked and waned throughout due to the demands of the day, we still need to remember to take care of ourselves and each other.

As I watched the video, I couldn’t help but think that if we drank the water, we wouldn’t feel the weight at all, but be refreshed.  It would actually nourish us and replenish us and help us. While stress can be debilitating if we don’t take care of ourselves, it can also be an opportunity to grow and get stronger. Let’s help each other to remember to put the glass down or even drink it once in a while.

February 5, 2021

Report Cards- Don’t forget that report cards MUST be completed by 11:59 on Sunday. We will send K-3 report cards home on Wednesday. 4th and 5th grade report cards will go home on Tuesday and Thursday.

SLGG’s and Eval.’s-  Now that we are getting our feet on the ground and we have teachers in all the classrooms (kind of a necessity at an elementary school), we can start addressing some of our other requirements, namely, SLGG’s and Eval.’s. There are some different requirements this year that I will try to summarize below:

Certified teachers will focus on Domain 1 (Planning and Preparation), Standard 3.13 (Clarity), Standard 4.16 (Criteria and Recognition), Domain 5 (Family and Community Outreach), and  Standard 6.24 (Professionalism).

School Psychologists will focus on Domain 2 (Consultation and Collaboration) and Domain 3 (Assessment and Data Based Decision Making).

Counselors will focus on Domain 2 (Delivery of Services) &  Domain 4 (Family and Community Outreach).

Speech and Language Pathologists will focus on Domain 3 (Delivery of Services) and Domain 4 (Management).

Special Education Teachers will focus on Domain 1 (Planning & Preparation for Learning) and Domain 5 (Family and Community Outreach).

Observations:

Probationary/Temporary Teachers:  Required to have two formals completed by March 15th and one mini.  The mini can be instructional or non-classroom observation. Administrator choice.

Contract Teachers on Evaluation Cycle:  Required to have three minis total.  Two instructional minis.  One can be an instructional or non-classroom observation.  Administrator choice.

Contract Teachers not on Evaluation Cycle:  Two mini observations.  One instructional. One can be an instructional or a non-classroom observation.  Administrator choice.

The state is still requiring everyone to complete SLGG’s. You may complete the SLGG form and submit to me. Feel free to work as a grade level or team to complete SLGG’s. They can look the same. Please get those completed and to me by February 19.

Any mini or formal observations previously completed by Kevin or me will count. Please let me know if you have any questions about slgg’s, observations or evaluations.

Next Friday- Please see Lora’s email about next Friday. In short, all instruction will be distance learning or CDL next Friday. Lora’s email gives more explanation.

Hours- It’s been brought to my attention that there is potentially still some confusion regarding work hours. As Kevin or I have shared on multiple occasions, we are flexible. 7:30-3:30 is our standard. But, if you want to work 7:15-3:15 or 7:00-3:00 or 7:08-3:08 or 7:24:30-3:24:30, that works. If you have a duty at 7:30 and want to make your hours 7:28:42-3:28:42, no worries. I probably won’t even notice if you leave at 3:28:04 (and even if I did I wouldn’t say anything). I’ve never worried about your hours. I trust you to get your job done. If this is still confusing, I am willing to set exact hours for everyone or even individuals, so there is no more confusion. I’ve always avoided this for multiple reasons. But, if it is simpler for me to set hours, let me know and I will. Questions, see me.

Nate Bartgatze is a pretty funny guy. There is a message in this for us as educators. But even if you don’t think it really connects, I hope you get a laugh.

We have a massive opportunity and responsibility as educators. We are charged with helping our students be prepared to be productive and contributing citizens who make a difference in the world and change the future! Let’s do what we can to make sure our students DO make a difference, whether in the future or if they travel back in time.

Thanks for another great week. Don’t look now, but there are only six (6!) more weeks until spring break. Have a fantastic weekend!

Bronco Notes for 01.29.21

Week two down.  Well done! Thanks for all of your work making students’ journey back to the building a successful one. This will be the first of my weekly notes. They may have a different appearance or format than you’re used to, but I will still link each week’s notes in the Bronco Bulletin for your continued reference. You will also receive an email each week with the link.

I thought I would start my notes this week with a few words about my how I’m going to approach things while I am sitting in for Kevin, whether it be 3 days or through the rest of this school year.

“…searching for the optimal relationship of low anxiety and high standards.” Roland Barth from Improving Schools from Within.

That quote and the one below have stuck with me since I read it in my first admin class a long, long time ago (in what seems like a galaxy far, far away). They are both cornerstones of the culture I try to create (try being key word as I will never bat 1000).  I try to take my job seriously, but try even harder to not take myself seriously. We continually strive to do what we can to help all of our students, while at the same time realizing that we need to take care of ourselves and each other and make sure to laugh once in a while. No one (you or me) does their best work under duress.

“The success of a school, I believe, depends above all on the quality of interactions between teacher and teacher and teacher and administrator.” Roland Barth from Improving Schools from Within

Trust is key in building these positive relationships. I will operate from a position of trusting you until you give me reason not to. I presume that you know what you are doing and that your intentions are good. Making a mistake, doing things differently than me, disagreeing with me or a decision we make, forgetting recess duty, and cheering for the Beavers are examples of things that will NOT erode my trust in you (the beaver thing is still a challenge for me).

Gossiping, questioning motives or character (I will make mistakes, but I’m trying my best), and not respecting colleagues are examples of things that WILL erode my trust in you.

I like to operate using the golden rule. I’m going to do my best (with obvious failures from time to time) to treat you how I like to be treated. My hope is that you will reciprocate. If you have a question, concern, idea, come and tell me. I will always listen. I may not change anything. That doesn’t mean I didn’t listen. It just means I felt that I had a more compelling reason to do it differently.  I’ll try to do the same for you.

I’m not a fan of, “Well, I’ve been talking to people and lots of them are very _______”  (fill in blank- concerned, upset, frustrated…). Encourage the people you’ve been talking to to talk to me.  It’s similar to when a parent shares a concern with me about a teacher, I will direct them to the teacher to solve.

I ask for your support, grace, and a willingness to work together. I trust you to do your job. I will try not to micromanage. I ask the same of you with me. All of us have difficult jobs when things are going well. If we are battling each other, our jobs become nearly impossible. I hope you sense a theme that I am far from perfect (as if I have to say that), but will try my best. Let’s have some fun and do everything we can to help our kids have an amazing school experience.

Decision Making- I try to follow a three C’s rule (I made that up) for decision making. Command, Consultative, Collaborative. Examples-

Command- The building is on fire. I will pull the fire alarm (yikes! we need to have a fire drill). Sorry, not consulting with anyone. Hope you do the same. These are pretty easy to decide and pretty rare. I try to avoid command decisions, but must make them from time to time. I might even make one when it would have been better to consult or collaborate. Sorry.

Consultative- These decisions are ones I make by consulting with as many people as possible who would be impacted before deciding. I might do this with an indoor recess or if we are going to move k/1 arrival to the back. These are often logistical in nature. They can be changed rather easily if we want.

Collaborative- These are decisions that have long range implications and we need to get a strong consensus before moving forward with something (or not).

I try to make most decisions by consulting or collaborating.  No one (especially me) wants me making all of our decisions. I’ve been around long enough to know that I make better decisions when I include others. There are not black and white lines between each of these. It is more gray. There will be times I make a command decision and you think I should have consulted. There will be times we collaborate and you will think, “why doesn’t he just decide and tell us?” Most decisions will be made in a way that at least someone thinks we should have used a different process (usually those are people who disagree with the decision). Again, I’ll do my best. My default is to have as many involved as possible and necessary. As always… have a question? Ask me. Door’s open.

Communication- My first choice is always in person. If I can, I’ll talk with you face to face. That might be one on one, small group or as a whole staff if we ever get back to that point. I might even ask one of your colleagues to pass something on because I couldn’t find you. Email is next. Finally, these notes will be the regular form of sharing information. I will send these out on Friday as early as I can. Sometimes that means early in the day. Other times it means late that evening. I do expect people to read them, but don’t expect you to spend your weekend doing so (although this week’s is so long it might take you the whole weekend). I’ll try to give as much notice as possible about things by using the notes. I try not to fill your inbox, but if something CANNOT wait, I’ll shoot out an extra email or drop in to see you.

Please see these notes each week for upcoming events. I’ll do my best to keep these as current as possible. I’ve asked Becky to transfer to our staff master calendar. I won’t do that. I write things here and in my calendar… two places is the limit to my capacity.

One of the key roles of a principal is to be a filter of information for staff. Too much can be stressful and unnecessary. Too little and all kinds of other problems occur. I try not to give so much that it overwhelms, but make sure you are all getting everything you need in a timely manner to do your job. I try my best to do this knowing that some people want to know everything yesterday and others don’t want to know about anything until tomorrow. I will share things as needed, when I’m allowed, and when I think it is most appropriate. It’s more of an art than science. I’m no Picasso, but I’ve sold some paintings at the local craft fair. 😉

I will continue the family newsletter.  Mine probably won’t look as cool as Kevin’s, but will hopefully keep the info flowing (or I will at least be able to say, “It was in the newsletter.”)

Whew. Sorry for the long-winded notes. I could probably go on, but realize most people probably already quit reading. Another day. I promise they won’t all be this long. I just really wanted to let you know how I am going to try to do things. Thank you for taking the time to read.

Now for the stuff you wish you would have skipped right to:

Priorities- Apologies for not being in classes more this week. Right now my priority is making sure all duties are covered and finding replacement teachers to fill our CDL vacancies. I’m putting as much as I can on the back burner until we have teachers for classes. Once we get those filled, we can get into more of a routine.

Hiring- I would like to announce the hiring of Desiree Alotaibi as our new 5 hour EA. She is a Buckingham parent and has spent countless hours volunteering for our school. She will be starting Monday- I hope.

Teri Carlson will be taking over for Laci as our new Title I reading teacher. Teri has run Title I programs in a high povery, high ELL, Oregon school with 400 students. We’re excited to have her join our team.

In addition, Renee Vardaman will be Heather Frank’s long term sub in lifeskills as Heather takes over the reigns as our Student Support EA beginning Monday.

We will be hiring asap to replace Todd Jacobson, Alyssa Kornbrath and Ryan Douglass, who will all be joining Kevin as part of Bend La Pine’s elementary CDL program. In addition, Kim Johnson will also be transferring to the CDL program.

We will have a team from kinder, fourth and fifth ready to interview and hire for Todd, Alyssa, and Kim. We have a team from ICCL who will interview for Ryan’s position early next week. We hope (desperately hope) to have people in place to start next week. Will let you know as we know more.

Schedules- Please input your grade’s schedule (reading, writing, math) on the google doc master schedule. It is essential for sped to be able to reference so they can ensure SDI is completed. Thanks to the grades who have already completed this!

PLC’s- This is your friendly reminder/ nudge to continue your work with PLC’s at your grade level. Our ask is that each grade meet two times/ month (Wednesdays is the set aside time) to focus on the questions: 1) What do we want students to learn? (standards). 2) How will we know they learned it? (assessment). 3) What will we do if they don’t learn it? (intervention). 4) What will we do for the students who already know it? (Enrichment). Please let me know the two dates for your February PLC’s. This information is helpful for Title and Sped so they know when to join you and for me so that I can also pop in from time to time.

Recess Bathrooms- Please direct students to use their regular cohort bathroom at recess. We know it’s a long walk in some cases, but we want to make it consistent. AND we will be understanding and allow ANY bathroom in  case of emergency.

Gators, Buffs, and Bananas…er Bandanas- You will or have already got new information about mask guidelines that included no gators, buffs (what is a buff) and bandanas. We will send this info out in our school newsletter. You don’t need to be the one to communicate this (you can if you want). We will work with students and help them. We will provide a mask and if they want to gator over it, that’s fine. Let us know if you need masks.

Hall Arrows- we can’t use the sticky on the carpet, so we’ve ordered some smaller velcro circles that we will draw arrows on and place in the hall. Coming soon. Thanks for the idea, Challey!

Monthly PBIS Drawings- I will start the monthly PBIS drawings from the case in the library next week. We’ll draw for an ice cream that they can take to recess (cause everyone wants to eat ice cream in the snow). Keep the weekly ones for books going in your classes.

Valentine’s Day- Some staff have asked about Valentine’s parties and the dos and don’ts related to COVID.  After speaking with Paul Dean, below is some guidance.

  • Valentine cards will need to follow the same safe handling rules as all materials. We plan to have students bring their Valentines to school and distribute them in individual boxes by Tuesday, 2/9.  The boxes will then sit until Friday, February 12th, when students will open them at Valentine parties.
  • Any candies brought need to be sealed airtight – i.e., foil-wrapped Hershey Kisses are not airtight.
  • If students bring their Valentine cards with less than 72 hours to sit, their cards can be laid out on a table and misted with the electrostatic machines.

Please give me input on Valentine’s Day class parties. I’m new here, you know. I don’t want to cancel the best day of the year, or schedule a bunch of parties on the holiday Buckingham eliminated 25 years ago. Consultative decision. 😉

Weekly Words of Wisdom from our Customers:

First grade girl: “I can’t wait until you start acting like the real princpal. You’ll do a great job.” Lesson- I better up my game. I hope I know how to act.

Kinder boy: “I think I like school more than work!” Lesson-Aren’t we lucky to get to do school instead of work!
